During the restoration of a 1956 yacht, the owner discovered that the boat had undergone a complete refit in 2002, with hull repairs addressing thickness issues below the waterline. The restoration process revealed a bilge area containing original chrome fittings, water-damaged components, and a box of light bulbs. Most significantly, the owner found complete documentation including manuals for air conditioning, water pumps, furnace, generators, and outboard motors, along with original parts like Federal propellers and Continental plugs. This documentation is invaluable for future repairs and system replacements, preserving the boat's historical integrity while enabling accurate restoration of its original systems.

What Was Left Inside This Abandoned YachtAdded:
There's no business like show business like no business I know.
Everything about it is appealing.
Everything that traffic will allow.
Nowhere could you get that happy feeling when you are stealing that extra bow.
There's no people like show people. They smile when they are low.
Even with a turkey that you know will fold. You may be stranded out in the cold. Still, you wouldn't change it for a sack of gold. Let's go on with a show.
The butcher, the baker, the grosser, the clerk are secretly unhappy men. Because the butcher, the baker, the grosser, the clerk get paid for what they do, but no applause.
They gladly bid their dreary jobs goodbye for anything theatrical. And why?
There's no business like show business and I tell you it's so.
Traveling through the country is so thrilling.
Standing out in front on opening night.
Smiling as you watch the theater filling. And there's your billing out there in lights.
There's no people like show people. They smile when they are low.
Angels come from everywhere with lots of Jack. And when you lose it, there's no attack. Where could you get money that you don't give back? Let's go on with the show.
There's no business like show business like no business I know.
>> You get word before the show has started that your favorite >> Southampton >> 2002.
Ah, now this is very interesting. So what these look like are a complete whole refit back in 2002.
So this one shows 56. So I assume that's 5.6 mil, 4.6, 3.8, 51. So, this is obviously the thicknesses of an area below the water line, which isn't quite up to standard. So, they're patching it all up.
I assume a steel hole on a boat like this would probably have to be about 6 mil, something like that.
So, you can see they've removed a lot of the fairing, scraped it all back.
There's a patch So, it's had quite a substantial amount of work done to the hole all the way back then. This is incredible.
Cut a complete hole in it.
Wow.
Well, this is amazing to see.
Look at that. Looks extraordinary.
Now that looks like a copper oxide paint.
So all of that work was done 24 years ago and now the boat's 70 years old. It needs a lot more welding done to the hole. So, I've had a marine welder come and have a look at the boat, and he's going to start all the welding a little bit later on in the year, which means at the moment, we're focusing on the roof, stop all the water ingress, the freshwater ingress, ruining these beautiful original 1956 interiors.
So, I'm waiting for a tool to arrive so we can take all of that top coat down to the original fiberglass and then have it reglassed, top coated, and it will stop all the water ingress wrecking these interiors.
But after looking in the cupboards, I think there's going to be some more gems hiding on this old boat because I've barely looked in any of the cupboards.
And it'd be interesting to see what else we can find hidden on this boat. So, what we'll do is we're going to have a look and see if we can find any other history or important documentation or treasures on this boat.
It looks like someone's put like a screwdriver in there and popped that panel up. So, let's see what's hidden under here.
Ah, what's that?
Just cables and things.
No secrets.
That would be a great place for hiding stuff though, wouldn't it?
You'd never know that was there.
So, I'm just down in the BGE, everyone.
And there's so much down here.
There's like old fittings and plugs and just literally everything you'd need to sort this old boat out.
Let's keep looking.
Right. Welcome to the BGE at the front of the old boat. What's all this?
Shower curtain hooks.
Okay, that's not that interesting.
What's this?
Oh, this looks like loads of old original fittings. So, you've got all chrome pieces from the boat. All right, let's check this.
That's like a vent. That's all in chrome.
Got two of those.
You've got door latches.
That looks like some sort of like water fitting or external piece.
They got loads of stuff in there. So, that's really really cool.
Let's get that out.
So these must be power.
What's in this hydraulic oil?
That's completely rusted out.
That's completely water.
This whole BGE must have been filled with water at some point.
Even that one there, you can see there's water in it.
So that's literally a box of light bulbs.
I can't move that.
glasses and just kitchen stuff.
So, we'll get all of these chrome fittings out of this rotten old box full of water cuz these are all original pieces from the boat that they've kept.
Don't going rusty.
They're like um so you can like open hatches and things.
That's for turning something match.
Fix it upside down.
Right. So, I found all of this in one of the cupboards. So, what I think it is is every single piece of documentation for the boat. So, let's start. Air conditioning, water pumps, store under galley sink. So that must be like merators or things.
The furnace. Is there a furnace?
Apparently there's a furnace.
David's ladder. So that's for the crane on top.
Generators.
Vitus generator.
Generators.
Wow.
Literally every single manual for everything.
What's this?
That's a Ford cylinder. So that's the manual for the second generator.
Oh, this is really important.
Navigator outboards. So that's the Johnson outboard which is on the tender outside.
Pumps, propellers. Now that's interesting. Propellers.
So Federal Propellers, Pacific Marine, California, San Diego.
That's very interesting.
Lovely old bow cups.
Continental South Africa.
Made in England. Churchill.
Nice. It's an old plug.
H.
Empty boxes.
Empty wine boxes.
They've left no wine behind.
Kettle. Those are quite nice water jugs.
What is this contraption?
What is this contraption? It's a coffee maker. Nice.
Perfect.
Nostalgia 10.
Old business cards.
Ruler.
These are really nice cabinets.
What's in the next cupboard?
newspapers from 2007.
Well, that's sort of corresponds with the year the boat was sort of left. 2007 again.
The times 2007.
That must be a poor speaker.
More rubbish. More rubbish.
Ah, these got glasses in.
So, they're wine glasses.
Got a lot of wine glasses.
All of those beautiful chrome pieces.
I've put them out in the sun to dry out.
Someone has gone to the effort of keeping them over the years, putting them in a box and looking after them.
But this is very important. And all of these documents means that in the future as we go through the systems and try and repair things or replace things, it's good to know that we've got the original manuals and we can use this for sort of like part referencing and things like that so we can get things working. Um, if not, we'll replace them. Um, so that's really important. I'm glad we found this cuz it sort of is a great reference to the history of the boat as well. What was on here at one point and what isn't here now. Um, and that BGE is very interesting at the front of the boat. They've used it for storage. It must have been completely full of water at some point. And I'm wondering how the water got in. It might be fresh water just dripping in over the years or um it came in with quite a lot of water in it already. Hard to say really. Um, so in the meantime, while we're waiting for this important tool that I've ordered to sort the roof out, um, I'm going to start refinishing a lot of the teak on the front of the boat and around the boat because this boat's going to be sat here for a few years now and all that exposure to rain and sun is going to degrade it. So, we'll start sanding it all off and we'll start using a really, really high quality yacht varnish and we'll get it all refinished and looking really nice and it will just protect it from all that exposure and keep it in good condition. Um, so yeah, thanks for watching everyone and I'll see you all in the next video.
