Bath, England: More Than Just History?!

[00:00:00]Good morning, beautiful people. I'm in Bath. So, we're just walking into the center of it now. Um going towards the Roman bath. That's where kind of where all the historical parts and the shops are. There's also the royal cresant which is really pretty. Um couple of little ghost stories is supposed to be quite a haunted city is Bath. So, it's been a long time since I've been here.

[00:00:25]I've been to the Therma Spar a couple of times. I've done the Roman baths. um way before YouTube. So yeah, maybe I might get myself a nice backpack. Um there's one in my Amazon basket which I haven't quite ordered yet. I'll keep my eye out.

[00:00:40]We've only paid for 3 hours parking though cuz it's rather expensive. £5.70 for 3 hours. So let's go and have a look and see if it's changed any since the years I've been here. So it's probably been a good 6 years since I've been here. It's been a while. So, there is Bath Therma Spa, which I've been to a couple of times. It does have um a heated pool on the top up there. It's really good. They've got like a ice room um cold plunge pools. It's really nice in there.

[00:01:13]Maybe I should have booked myself in, but looking to have a little look around. So, we've got Hetling Core in front of us, all the beautiful stone buildings. So, I do wonder how much it is now. It was relative of expensive when I came a few years ago. It's a nice treat that we used to do and just go and hide bathe in the pool at the top. It was really gorgeous in there. So, we've crossed over into Somerset and Bath is a UNESCO World Heritage city based in Somerset. It's renowned for its 2,000-year history originating as a Roman spa town named Aqui. SS focused on natural hot springs following the Roman decline. It flourished in the middle ages as a wool center before becoming an elegant Georgian social hub famous for its 18th century archite architecture such as the Royal Cresant. Royal Cresant is a little bit of a walk away but it's beautiful and there is I think there is a ghost story there so I might try and get there. This is the room and bath just in front. So if you are in Bath it's worth going in there. Um I've been in it's really really good. It's fairly expensive, but I think I got bought it as a present.

[00:02:25]So, just here you've got the Roman baths. Um, visitors and staff at the Roman baths have reported a lady in white seen in the steam and other tales include a naked Roman running through a green and so soldiers also seen in the city center. Roman soldiers.

[00:02:41]They've gone into the Primark to swap something. Um, but I'm just having a wonder around waiting for them outside just looking at the architecture. Look at that. How stunning. I love bath. It's really beautiful. So, the Roman baths is a remarkably wellpreserved thermal spark was founded in 70 AD as aquisols built around natural hot springs. The Romans dedicated the site to the happiness of sorry to the goddess Sulis Manurva.

[00:03:11]Merging religious worship with public bathing. It served as a major social leisure and health hub for nearly 400 years. So following their invasion of Britain in 43 AD, the Romans recognize the potential of steaming and natural hot springs construction. The construction of the temple and the main bathing complex began in around 60 to 70 AD. It was built for public bathing, socializing and worship. The bathing was central to Roman life, serving as a daily social ritual, and people would move through the rooms of varying temperatures. today. It still does house some pools, but they are um only in the habitable. You can't go inside them.

[00:03:49]They're quite toxic these days, but it still does have the thermal pools inside as well as lots of historical things that you can go and see. Okay, just coming up in front of us is Bath Abbey.

[00:03:59]It's a section convert. Um it's made in 16 675 sorry, AD. It's a historic site of Christian worship. A 12 has a 1200 year history. It was a Norman cathedral, a ruined structure following the 16th century dissolution of the monasteries and was restored in the 17th century becoming a parish church. Is famous for its perpendicular Gothic architecture known as a site where King Eda was crowned in 973 AD. It's absolutely gorgeous, isn't it? I don't know how much it is to get in, but yeah, it looks stunning. There's some really nice restaurants and stuff in Bath as well.

[00:04:37]It's really beautiful. Nice place to come and eat and just spend the day wondering around soaking up the architecture and the culture. There we go. N pound to get inside the abbey and then extra if you want to go and do the tower tour. It's a lot.

[00:04:58]Got an Abby shop as well. How they made money. So presumably if you're doing the tower tour, you're going all the way up there. But look at the windows. The light in there must be absolutely stunning. I'm glad I brought my backpack despite the fact that it was falling apart. I might have to take my coat off and put it in it. There's a chocolate shop over there. Look, Miss Pot's chocolate shop.

[00:05:21]I don't know what this is with all the um it's got like sea turtles and stuff in the windows. That's pretty, isn't it?

[00:05:28]So, just outside you can see all the statues inside the Roman baths. Um, you can go inside that courtyard when you go pay to get get in. It's about 22 quid. I I estimate between 20 and £25, but yeah, £22 I think it is. And loads of little independent like sweet shops and stuff.

[00:05:46]It's really cute. How beautiful is that tree? Look at it. It's pretty.

[00:05:53]Apparently, this is the f home of the famous Bath Bun. And then they make another one next door. Well, next door, but a few. Steve and Catherine have done a thing on that. It's Yeah, I don't know whether I would like it or not to be honest. But I'm liking all these bakeries. Look at all them cookies.

[00:06:11]It's not actually majorly busy either, which is really nice. It feels quite relaxed. So, there we go. The oldest house in Bath, Salons, made in 1482.

[00:06:22]So, there's the buns that they make, the Salon bun. It says it's best toasted.

[00:06:26]That's quite a large bun, isn't it? I don't know whether I would like that or not. It looks like a cross between a cake and a bread. So, we're heading over to the river. There is um a little gardens here and an art gallery. It's a little bit out of the town, but it's literally just here. I think it's the AAN, which is obviously near where we are, but yeah, look, it's so pretty.

[00:06:54]So, these are the gardens. I'm pretty sure you have to pay to go down into the gardens. Um, there's a little we on the river. I have been down here before actually, many, many moons ago. It's actually lovely. I think it was really hot the last time I came. The gardens are pretty though, aren't they?

[00:07:12]You can see how windy it is from the flag just over there. Yeah, it's nice to come out towards the river. Just have a little walk.

[00:07:21]just at the back of the Abbey and they're obviously doing a little bit of construction on it which is typical for anywhere I visit at the minute. Always seems to be covered in scaffolding. Oh, look that you can walk down into the gardens. The gates are all open. Yeah, you can come into the gardens. Um it's just it's only open between 10 and 6 and you cannot bring dogs in. So there's no dogs policy, but you can go for a little walk down by the river. See the we and look at the boats.

[00:07:51]So, it's won quite a lot of awards.

[00:07:56]That's why it is really, really pretty in the summer when all the flowers are out. It's lovely here. Look at that.

[00:08:08]Going down very carefully cuz I'm just wearing my um Converse today.

[00:08:13]So, here's where we are.

[00:08:17]Parade Gardens. It's existed since 1936 and in that year there were major changes to the boundaries of the gardens and the new road that was constructed linking North Parade Bridge and Pney Bridge. As a result of the scheme, the park received a new entrance comprising of a dome ticket office, a grand double staircase, and a long ramp beneath the western wall. So, we'll go down and have a look.

[00:08:42]It's really nice down here. Beautiful.

[00:08:44]Look at the old wall there. As per usual, everybody get off and left me.

[00:08:50]They'll be down there somewhere waiting to jump out on me probably.

[00:08:57]Oh, it's pretty. So, this will be part of the original walls and then obviously they've constructed all this new walls. Um, was it 1936, but I told you? Look how cute it is. It's lovely. They've obviously had some problems with um like flooding and stuff. That's why it's all fenced off.

[00:09:17]And in the middle is what looks like a Roman soldier and a pig.

[00:09:21]Uh, so there's the we. So I think you can go on the bridge over there and see the we've done that before.

[00:09:30]So that's who the guy with the pig is.

[00:09:31]King Bladed and the bath pigs celebrates King Bloodard who is acknowledged as the founder of Bath a thousand years before the Romans. Famous legend surard who is the rightful king of the Britain and who was unable to inherit the throne as he had leprosy. Vanished from the royal place as a swine yard, he roamed at Booker, the countryside with his herd of pigs close to the place we now know as Bath. The pigs were cured of scurvy and other skin conditions. And after rolling in the hot mud around some springs, Vlad did the same, and he was cured, too. Did you see that?

[00:10:13]>> So that's the statue which is just over there. The class is educational.

[00:10:25]>> One of them places obviously got gardeners here quite a lot. And the they're having a little break. They brought the chairs just having a little rest with the little trolley. That's nice. And you've got the little band stand in the middle. That's really pretty, isn't it? Might go over and have a look at that. Oh, it's got little musical notes on it. So this is celebrating the nation's heritage in iron work. In 2000 2018, Bathbased charity national heritage iron work group signed a spectacular public forging event here in the gardens involving teams of blacksmiths from all over the country and thousands of bath residents. They came to take part in a vibrant celebration of the heritage skills at the heart of our world heritage city. That's pretty, isn't it?

[00:11:11]So, we're going to go if we can have a look closer at the we cuz I'm sure you can. I'm sure I've done that before, but we're going to leave Parade Gardens behind which is really beautiful. You could just go and get yourself a Sally London and come here and eat it for your dinner as a little picnic. It's really pretty little place. I'm glad we decided to just come out the city a little bit.

[00:11:32]I think they they're testing the bells in the abbey. They're making little little songs with them. That's really cool. Where's Magpie up there? Hello, Mr. Magpie. So, this statue was erected by the citizens of Bath in memory of Edward the Peacemaker.

[00:11:48]So, we're headed up now towards see if we can see the we um a little bit better. Took my coat off.

[00:11:55]Not quite hot enough to shed Marta yet, but still quite warm. Ooh, traditional lemonade.

[00:12:05]Might have to get some of that. So there is your little map of Bath, which is quite a big map actually. And it does tell you um identified as a masterpiece of human creative genius. And all of the bits and pieces that you can go and see are labeled on here, which is really cool. Well, that you can do a boat tour.

[00:12:24]I did remember seeing them the last time I was here. I'm not sure if we'll be able to go on the barge cuz I might have to go and get my wheels done. It's cool down here though. So, the Royal Presents up that way, but we've seen the Gilful Market, which is open. So, I'm wondering if I can get says handbags. So, I might be able to get a backpack. Let's go and have a look. Oh, the cafe is open too.

[00:12:50]Oh, there we go. There is described in charter in 1371 having been held by the bishop of Bath from time immemorial. At the time, the market was held on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

[00:13:02]from October until Palm Sunday. Peace for the eyes in this place, isn't it?

[00:13:07]Not come across any bags I fancy yet, though. Not come across any bags that I like yet. I am a bit fussy. Um I really liked the little leather one that I got in Spain, but I found nothing like that at all, which is sad.

[00:13:21]Got a sweaty B shop there. Used to be only able to get that online when I used to go to the gym, but obviously they've started to have shops now. So, we're at the podium, which is the central library. And obviously, Waitro is in there, just at the back of the abbey going into New Bond Street where all the shops are. It's so nice to just wander around in the sunshine. I'm having a right nice old time. I've actually had to buy myself a new t-shirt though cuz I'm running low on t-shirts. There's a fair bit of traffic, so I'm trying to be careful on the road. But yeah, no bags yet. Not even in the market, which is a bit weird. But I thought I might come across something in there. Really nice spot for like Moroccan plates and lamps.

[00:14:06]Obviously can't have one of them in the mom, though, cuz everything's plastic.

[00:14:11]There we go. Here we've got King Edward School. Building designed by Thomas Jelly and completed in 1754 and was restored in 1978 by the friend of King Edward School with the age of a grant from Bath Town Scheme.

[00:14:27]Just walking around the road and spotted that one. We're on our way up to the Royal Cresant, but there's loads of independent shops up here. It's lovely.

[00:14:34]Like they do handmade dresses and all sorts handmade furniture. It's really, really nice. Lots of lovely, lovely shops.

[00:14:44]And then there's a charity shop just there, Cat Bath, Cats, and Dogs Home.

[00:14:48]That's where I got my books from in Bradford on Haven the other day. I'm getting moaned at cuz apparently I'm rubbish at reading Google Maps. But I'm taking us in the right direction cuz it's up here.

[00:16:02]Look how beautiful that is.

[00:16:06]What does it say? In 1985, work began on recreating a Georgian style garden. The existing garden was mainly Victorian with a lawn and a rockery, although the classic pavilion and fish pond have been added in the 20s. So, this is number four, the circus. It was completed by August 1761.

[00:16:25]And then that is a little roundabout and stuff where we're going or Sergey map. That's really cute. All the flowers are definitely giving me a little bit of hay fever, though. Oh, look.

[00:16:39]Bath conservation area 1991 environmental award. It's really good when you find little random discoveries like that. That's really cute. So, I wasn't expecting that cuz my Google maps was going to take me down there where all the cars are, but we've gone up this foot path here. How beautiful these are.

[00:16:57]There's trees lying in the backs of these amazing gardens, these amazing properties. I do know Bath is rather an expensive place to live.

[00:17:08]There's always somebody with a grinder.

[00:17:10]So this is the Royal Cresant in Bath.

[00:17:12]The first one there is number one which is a museum. Um it was built designed by John Wood the younger and built between 1767 and 1774.

[00:17:22]It's a masterpiece of Georgian architecture featuring 30 terrace houses arranged in a sweeping 500 ft cresant.

[00:17:29]It overlooks Royal Victoria Park which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. So it is famous famously used as Featherington's family home in Bridgetton as well as the Duchess. So to god it's like going out of a grumpy toddler if he's hungry or he's thirsty.

[00:17:44]He doesn't want to go anywhere. Doesn't want to walk anywhere and everything's boring.

[00:17:58]There's toilets and a band stand, tennis court, the fashion museums up there and the assembly rooms. Okay, just behind me is Royal Avenue and down here is the botanical gardens. I think they're in Victoria Park. Um, it's absolutely stunning. So, if you come out of Bath a little bit and go to the Royal Cresant, you're surrounded by all these beautiful, stunning gardens. There are a couple of little bits like the Bath Ns down here somewhere. I'm not sure where.

[00:18:25]Um, and then obviously you got little lights. I think there's crazy golf.

[00:18:30]Yeah, there it is. Crazy golf just to the side. Um, so there's loads of stuff to do in Bath. Even if you got like youngans, it's a really really good place to come. I like it. I've always like Bath. It's just one of them places that was always a bit too far away from Manchester to visit. Um, so it'd have to be a hotel stay. But yeah, it's I think I stayed up on a hotel outside of Bath, like a bit of a walk down a really steep hill. one that really would not like to drive my van up.

[00:18:58]So, we're going to go and have a quick look at the botanical gardens, then I think go to Weather Spoons and then head back. It's peaceful down here. There's nobody down here. All the tourists and the big coaches are going up towards Royal Cresant. So, you got the little benches and that down here, tennis court. It's like a proper community area. Well, all that's down there is the tennis courts, the rolling green, and the putting green. There is no botanical gardens down there. And now that's telling us it's in that direction, which is where we've just come from. All around you do get these ves dedicated to certain committees and whatnot as well.

[00:19:32]But this is your entrance into the Royal Avenue. I think that's what this is. So, we're going to head down now. Botanical Gardens is quite far away. We're not going um head down to get a drink of some description. These gates are stunning, aren't they? Is this Yeah, Royal Avenue. So, where you come in the gates and then you head up in that direction there and then there's your gates with the two lions on the top. Everywhere you look, there's just buildings like this. It's just so pretty. There's just eyes everywhere all the time. I love it. I could spend all day here easily wandering around, but parking's quite expensive. It's 10 to 12, so we're going to Weather Spoons, which is in the old post office. So, see if we can get ourselves some cheap tweets. Well, I had to quit because my recipient's app would not work. I got to the payment bit and it just kept doing the circularly thing and then it kept saying I had a master card and I don't have a master card. So, Steve's having to do it for me.

[00:20:51]Didn't manage to find a bag. Look, my bag is really starting to show. It's worse for wear.

[00:20:58]>> I might have to order that one off Amazon. I keep hoping I'm going to find a nice one, but I haven't. Mine has arrived, but I think that's a child size steak and kidney pudding. It's the smallest one I've ever seen in my life.

[00:21:09]Look at the size of it. We're just leaving Weather Spoons now. And this is Flora. She was the Roman goddess of flowers and fertility and the arrival of spring when the flowers bloom and fertility is at its peak. Her image is often associated with youth and vitality. That's really pretty, isn't it? For however spoons bath aboot tower. Okie dokie. Dinner eaten. So we're making our way back to the car before the parking runs out. So headed back down this street. I think we do pass the theater and there is a little ghost story about the theater if we do pass it. But some of the shops are really interesting. So that's called Fat Giraffe Gifts. Look at that giant dog.

[00:21:57]That's a surprise.

[00:21:59]So we don't know whether we're going past the first now cuz my phone said I was going to and now it's not. So we'll just have to see. But I do like all the shops in Bath. They're all lovely.

[00:22:13]>> A lot of the old buildings are obviously being worked on and scaffolding up, but you can see all the Georgian architecture. It's really pretty. Water stones over there. That's very tempting, but I've got some books. There's somebody playing music down here. I like the fact that all the >> Well, we walked up earlier, ain't it?

So that's the Royal National Hospital for rheumatic diseases or it was there was some um it's really annoying cuz they're trying to dig up the road. There's some information about that on in Weatherspoons. I do like that about Weather Spoons is that they do provide historical information about the buildings that we're in. Got more music going on down here, but she's actually playing the guitar. just really nice.

[00:23:19]You can see it's got a lot lot busier than when we come this morning. So, it's now half 12, so everybody's out for dinner. But this is where we were where I was filming the Roman Bash before.

[00:23:36]We've definitely missed the theater. But we're going past the best Cornish pasti in the world. Even though we're not in Cornwall, we're in Somerset.

[00:23:47]Even the pubs are pretty and bath. The lamb and the lion.

[00:23:53]There's some shouting going on behind me. It's a nice little spot to sit and have your dinner in it. So, we're only like 3 minutes away from the car now.

[00:24:02]So, not far. So, that is the conclusion of our little tour of Bath, which I've absolutely loved. It's been brilliant.

[00:24:12]Yeah, absolutely brilliant. I've loved it. Okie cookie. I'm back from bath.

[00:24:16]Just put the kettle on and have a break.

[00:24:18]But this is a bargain of the century.

[00:24:20]So, it's from Monsoon and it was £10.

[00:24:24]£10 for that. It's really pretty. It's a little bit big, but I prefer things a little bit big than too tight. So, I've got that. And then I got myself a t-shirt in millets which says happy camper and it's got a little camper van on it. That was £12 in the sale. So not done bad for stuff today. Just didn't get a backpack which I wanted. And the best news of the day is I've got my appointment to go and get my wheels fitted tomorrow. So I'm taking the day off filming tomorrow. Heading over to Reading cuz it's about an hour and a half drive. Obviously got to wait, get my wheels done and then head back which is another hour and a half drive.

[00:25:00]So, three-hour drive in in total. Have to put some diesel in and there is a task up so we can go and get some shopping. But yeah, me and him are off in the morning, aren't we? For a little trip. Cup of tea had boiler is on. It's still on, Phil. I don't know how much gas I've got. Yeah, still on. Um yeah, I'm running quite low in the gas department, I think. Uh so, we booked another two nights on here. So, that's tonight and tomorrow night. Obviously, I'll be coming back tomorrow after um going to reading to get my wheels done.

[00:25:31]I'm quite excited about that. Um so, don't know what we're doing after that.

[00:25:37]And obviously, I'm going to be here till Sunday. So, that'll be Wednesday. So, Thursday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday. I need to find something to do down here if we're moving. Um we might be ready to be moving by then. Maybe. I'm thinking ready to kind of have a bit of a change of scenery. It's It's lovely down here.

[00:25:59]Don't get me wrong. I've really really enjoyed Bath today. Bath is absolutely beautiful. Um and there is like park and rides that you can go and park vans in to go into the city on the bus. I don't think you're allowed to sleep overnight there though. I'm pretty sure there's no excuse me overnight parking signs. I slept really really well last night. But the trains going past were um making pee peep noises. I don't know if there's something on the tracks or something and it came into my dreams. I was on a train. It's weird what your brain does with your dreams, isn't it? He was fast asleep when I come in. Now he keeps jumping on the floor, but he has had his dinner.

[00:26:37]Yeah. So, he's Well, the thing that I'm worried, a little bit worried about is I've obviously going to have to leave him in the van. So, I don't think they allow dogs in the showroom um at Rogue.

[00:26:47]So, he might be a bit a bit worried.

[00:26:49]bless him because obviously the van's going to be up in the air and um there's going to be noises and like vibrations and stuff, but I'll just have to tell them I'll have to leave him in the van and see if they'll let me take him in the showroom with me. Maybe. We'll see.

[00:27:03]Um he's a good dog. He's not going to go into a shop and pee up stuff, but maybe that's what they'll be worried about.

[00:27:08]God, that sun is so strong when it comes out, but that breeze is properly cold.

[00:27:12]Um it's turned temperature wise a little bit cooler at the moment. So, shower time. Then get this video edited. Make sure my van is pretty much packed up cuz I'm going to set off about 8:00 in the morning. There's a big Tesco nearby so I can go at my appointment at 11:00. Um, it's going to take me, it says an hour and a half, probably more like an hour and 40, hour and 50 in this. And then I can park up on the big Tesco, which isn't far away from Rogue, do a little bit of shopping, wait for my appointment, then dart over and get my my appointment done, get my new wheels put on. going to get that new tire that I had put on just before I went to Europe put on the spare. Ask them to do that for me and they'll dispose of all the old wheels, which is really, really good. So, I'm really quite impressed.

[00:27:58]Um, they've been good. So, we'll see what it looks like tomorrow. Daisy's going to look a little bit different with her new shoes on um tomorrow afternoon when I come back. So, I better let the stewards know that I'm going and I'm coming back cuz obviously I paid for another night. I don't want them accosting me when I come back. making sure that I've obviously come in and paid. So, I will go over and let them know in a bit. Get my waist emptied and then I'll be light on water, but I can fill up when I come back tomorrow. Just go over to the tap before I park up.

[00:28:26]Yeah. Um cuz obviously I took the awning and everything down yesterday and packed up my chair and my table. There's not a lot to do. Just got to come off the ramps, get the silver screen off, and then I'm pretty much ready to roll. I always have the van fairly ready. Um and I had a feeling it was either going to be today or tomorrow. And that's another reason I took the stuff down yesterday.

[00:28:47]Windbreak's actually come down while we've been out. So it has been very very windy. So I have a little bit of a belated birthday shout out for Sandy who will be se would have been 72 on the 7th of May. Um I apologize it's a bit of a belated one but obviously my videos are a little bit in front and I didn't get it in time in order to get it out for the 7th. So obviously don't I don't put a video out on Friday. So happy belated birthday Sandy 72. Hope you've had an amazing day and you're still celebrating.

[00:29:14]But that's going to be pretty much it for this video. I'm afraid I'm not doing anything else other than having a shower and snuggling up with my boy, editing this video, and um watching some more.

[00:29:26]What did I start watching yesterday? The peripherals. Um I think they only did one season and then it got axed. But so far so good. I've watched a bit of the first one and it's quite interesting.

[00:29:36]So, yes, I'm going to carry on watching that and uh pretty much make sure I'm ready to roll in the morning. So, 8 8 o'clock I'll be off here. The gate will be open and then we'll see how long it takes me to get to reading, get my wheels done, get back here. It's going to be one of them days I think. But, um at least I can get a bit of shopping on the way cuz I'm running low. I only need a tiny bit for the fridge. I'm all right for most stuff actually to be fair. But, there's a big Tesco so that's where I can go and park up if I'm early. I like to be early as you know and wait for my appointment then get my wheels on and then head back to the others. But yes, shortly. So, what day are we on today?

[00:30:15]Sunday night I think I'm going to be going. Um so yeah, not that much longer down here. And then I'm headed back north again to pick up my lovely little sis. I found somewhere to stop on the way which I'm thinking or maybe I just might d up to stopport and stop nearby.
