Romanticizing Victorian morality as a fix for systemic collapse is a naive distraction from the structural and material crises South Africa faces. It offers a simplistic spiritual band-aid for deep-seated political wounds that "moral renewal" alone cannot heal.

South Africa Is Dying While You Dance.Added:
Honesty and excellence are two things that set an individual, a community, company, and even a country apart.
Political correctness, however, has led us to remaining quiet about things that we should be very vocal about. The elimination of shame has caused individuals, communities, companies, and the country to reach pathetic levels. We tolerate shameful, unprofessional, and uncivilized conduct from all corners of our lives. Let me just keep quiet. I don't want to rock the boat. But the fact is, for a society to run well, political correctness needs to take a backseat. For a community, company or country to reach its fullest potential, certain behaviors need to be named and shamed. They need to be frowned upon.
And before we go too far, something else that needs to be frowned upon is late salaries and pays slip confusion, both of which lead to staff morale issues.

Thanks to Express for sponsoring this video. Now, how can South African community step away from behaviors that deserve to be frowned upon to stop being quiet about things that we ought to be calling out? Let's start off with lessons from Britain. Historian Harold Perkin wrote, "Between 1780 and 1850, the English seized to be one of the most aggressive, brutal, rowdy, rioters, cruel, and bloodthirsty nations in the world and became one of the most inhibited, polite, orderly, tender-minded, and prudish." Quite a change, right? What I want us to focus on today is how did this transformation of the English take place. The answer lies in the efforts of institutions like the Methodist efforts of men like William Wilberforce, Lord Chafttersbury and many others who worked to change Britain in this era. Their efforts resulted in what historians call Victorian morality. Some people frown upon it today, but within the 19th century, by embracing Victorian morality, the English society set an example worth following, ways of living worth emulating. And this makes them a great example for South Africa to learn from. You see, in the 19th century, Britain had become a cesspool of crime.
Crime had terrorized the streets of London. Mob action was common and fear gripped the minds of civilians. In the 21st century, South Africa frequently appears in the top five highest crime indices globally. Back then, Britain was exploiting its children through child labor, especially the ones from poor backgrounds. Believe it or not, children aged 9 to 18 were not going to school.
Instead, they were working 9 to 12 hour shifts. Some of them even being made to work night shifts. In South Africa, three survive attempted murder daily and 28 suffer grievous bodily harm daily.
From 2020 to 2024, over 100,000 cases of child rape were reported. A 2024 report indicated that of over 5,000 cases of child abuse handled, only 4% led to convictions. That's quite a lot of child abuse, isn't it? In the 17 and 1800s, depravity and profanity was the order of the day in Britain. From gambling to prostitution, from obscene literature to profane theater. A look at modern South Africa shows a rapidly escalating gambling addiction crisis. With online betting driving a surge in addiction cases and financial distress, one doesn't need adult magazines anymore.
All you need to do is flip through television shows, whether in Modula, Zansancy Magic, or on SABC, and you will see the profanity right in your living room while you sit with your children.
Many of you know someone who's willing to urinate in public or dump trash at the nearest corner. It's either a friend, family member, or a neighbor, or it's you. We have accepted decay in our lives. But who will rise up and say no to that friend, to that family, or to that neighbor? Currently, Africa's role models are people who have stolen from the nation's coffers. People who have stolen from the poorest of the poor.
Role models are glamorized sex workers teaching young girls to not be satisfied with their bodies, go through life-threatening procedures to artificially change their bodies, and then use those bodies to get that vacation, that bag, or that apartment.
Does that not bother you? Does that truly not bother us as South Africans?
Some of you may be living your best lives now, insulated from many of the decay and the depravity that I've mentioned, but sooner or later, one way or another, the reality of the society that we live in will affect you. The profane role models may influence your sisters, your daughters, or your wives through social media or TV, leading them to being the next slave queens. The criminals we have in government affect you in taxes, in infrastructure, and the quality of life that you and your loved ones are able to lead in this society.
As individuals, as institutions, as businesses, we have failed to safeguard our country. And that is why we are where we are. We have failed. Britain too had failed. They saw it. They acknowledged it and they did something about it. The British church is like the Methodist Church. Politicians like William Wilberforce, the rich philanthropists like Lord Shaffersbury became agents of change in Britain.
Society stood up and took action and within less than a century, many of the problems that are facing South Africa were a thing of the past for the people of Britain. The reason why I like going through history is because it shows us that what has been is what will be. What has been done is what will be done. For there is nothing new under the sun. So if there is nothing new, then we don't need some new special complicated solutions for South Africa. The blueprint of how to get out of the mess that we currently find ourselves in, be it as individuals, as communities, as companies, or as a country, is available. The question is, will we use it? To those who want the solutions, let's continue to look at how the people of Britain overcame some of the problems that we as South Africa are facing. They chose to elevate morality as one of the highest treasures to pursue. They encouraged all to seek personal improvement. They priced a good work ethic as a virtue. They pushed for Christian values, values that we know but choose to look down on. Instead of accepting depravity, the British declared that content that is inappropriate for family consumption should never find its way into homes, resulting in many novels and theaters being cleaned of inappropriate content.
We have the BCCSA that is the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa. How many of us have reached out to them to complain about the obscene content that is being broadcast on our televisions even during prime time? That is family time. How many of us within this era, Britain chose to clamp down on the owning and selling of slaves? Believe it or not, the fight to end slavery globally started in their own country during this period. And they didn't stop there.
Britain also banned child labor in factories. They demanded age and work hour restrictions for certain work to protect the children. Of all the British couples that live together, less than 10% were not married. Compare that to today where 50% of all the children born in Britain are now born out of wedlock.
This era of Victorian morality also led to a decrease in crimes in the streets of London. The first assembly of what we all now know as a police emerged out of that society. The first modern street lamps were lit in that society. Since there was no electricity yet, they used gas and it worked. Crime rates fell.
These were some of the successes of the Victorian era morality. A moral society betters the living standards of his people, both young and old, rich and poor. We can see the same transformation happening to us. We can experience the same changes in South Africa today.
Britain has unfortunately lost a lot of that conviction that brought so much change to them and to the world and we can see the results. Just as Britain is deteriorating because of abandoning these morals, South Africa is where it is today because it has done the same.
What is worse is that not every South African has abandoned Ubuntu for racism, selfishness and cruelty. Not every South African has abandoned the value of good old hard work, honesty and integrity and replaced it with corruption, dishonesty and incompetence. Be it in government or private work. Not every South African has abandoned the value of modesty, decency and self-control for depravity, drunkenness and looseness. So if not every South African has abandoned morality, why is South Africa in the state that she's in? Because those that believe in the right kind of ubuntu acquired, those that believe that South Africa should be a moral country are watching from the sidelines. People in different sectors of society have opted to not take necessary action.
Individuals, businesses that know right from wrong have chosen to be politically correct. Ladies and gentlemen, the first thing to do in order to move from where we are is to realize that keeping quiet encourages the bad actors in society. We are where we are because we have accepted that which should have never been accepted. We have accepted rubbish in the forms of mediocrity, immorality, corruption, and division. And until we roll up our sleeves and start targeting the various ills plaguing our country today, we will continue to cry and complain about the same old problems even tomorrow. Fact is, we need to identify agents of change in South Africa and support them. More importantly, we need to become those agents of change pursuing the changes we wish to see in our country, in our companies, and in our communities. And just as Britain gave us great examples to emulate, South Africa did too. The 1989 boycott showed us agents of change.
The 1992 referendum also showed us some agents of change. To avoid making this an even longer video. We will discuss those two separately. So please make sure that you're subscribed so that when we release those videos, you are notified. Who are the agents of change today? Are you one of them? Which companies are agents of change today? Is your company one of them? You must never assume that you have to just keep quiet in the face of evil. You cannot just sit back and watch while the country burns because sooner or later you two will feel the heat of those flames.
Acknowledge that there is something wrong with where we are and work to take South Africa to where we all wanted to go. Say no to crime and corruption that is lowering the standard of living for all South Africans. Say no to incompetence that is blocking South Africa from reaching her potential in terms of GDP, development, innovation, and global competitiveness. Say no to immorality that is being perpetuated through media, academic material, and the so-called role models that we have elevated. And know that saying no will require you to use your knowledge, your resources, your status as a business leader, your proximity to your employees, your employer and colleagues, your neighbors, family, and other acquaintances to push for the change that will benefit them and the country as a whole. Are you going to be an agent of change? Anyway, that's it for today.
