70s and Storms as heat breaks this week.

[00:01:56]Hi there. [clears throat] I'm Firstwan 5 meteorologist Mike Nico. Hopefully you're having [sighs and gasps] a good Monday. I would say great, but with that weather outside, I'm not sure there was a I'm sure there was something to be great about. I don't know. I want to downplay it. I just wanted to emphasize how hot it was today. hottest day of the year. Believe it or not, we hit 97 degrees.

[00:02:25]We haven't been that hot since uh September 12th of last year. And September 12th of last year, um it wasn't this humid, that's for sure.

[00:02:40]And uh not being that humid, that was uh quite a difference because our heat index was 108.

[00:02:49]I mean 97 and 108. That is some pretty nasty weather. All right, I'm going to a little issues with the control panel here. So, give me one second to get this back where it should be and we will get going here.

[00:03:08]All right, let's start her up and let's go right to there.

[00:03:20]Boom. Got it. All right. Not sure why it's doing doing what it's doing, but we're going to get this fixed.

[00:03:29]All right. Hottest day of the year.

[00:03:30]There it is. Let's roll out exactly what we're talking about to see it in numbers. I mean, yeah. 97 and then that 108. Remember that 108 that is in the shade. It can feel 10, 15, 20 degrees warmer if you're outside in the sun depending on your hair color, your skin color, the color of your clothes, the type of clothes. So it could have felt 118 to 128 outside. That is what made it so hazardous. Okay, we still have the heat advisory in place and that continues until we get to 9:00 this evening. Crazy, right? But here's the crazy part is yeah, relief starts tomorrow. Oh, maybe they dropped the heat advisory. They had a heat advisory for places like Ottawa, Piola, Harrisonville, Warrenburg, Sadelia, and southward. So maybe the weather service has dropped it. We'll take a look at that and double check that coming up at 10 o'clock. All right, so here's what's going on right now. I mean, look at that. That's pretty hazy.

[00:04:34]That is all the humidity that is going on outside right now. That is not the f the smoke yet. Okay, the smoke. We still got a ways to go before the smoke gets here from the Canadian wildfires. And it's kind of a catch 22 to be honest with you. Canada is sending us the cooler air, but they're also attaching the smoke from their wildfires to it.

[00:04:55]So, we'll take a look at that and what to expect right now. 94° and it still feels like 104 outside. That is crazy.

[00:05:05]And there's barely any wind southwest at 7 miles per hour. And that's what I noticed over the weekend. and I was working on a house and no air conditioning and go outside to just maybe get some relief and there's just no breeze. There's just absolutely no breeze. It was it was tough but it had to be done. And like many of you who worked outside or not in air conditioning, I felt your pain and oh man 102 in Blue Springs Lee Summit Grand View. That's as mild or as not as hot as it feels. I mean 105 in Tonganoxy, 107 in Liberty and Carney. I don't want to leave them out. 114 in Mville is what it feels like right now. And you are the only one in the double or in the 11s and you've been there all day. Ottawa was there for a while at 115, but now you're down to 107. Feels 8 degrees cooler. Can you notice it? Can you feel it? Geez. Crazy, right? Look at this. We're in the 90s all the way through nine o'clock. And that's just the air temperature. It is not going to be comfortable whatsoever this evening. By 10:00, we're out of the 90s and we're finally out of the 100s as far as feels like. So, even when it's dark, it is still going to feel like 93 degrees.

[00:06:22]1:00 a.m. on Tuesday. Here's where the heat relief begins. It's a cold front.

[00:06:29]cold front's going to roll through, kick up only a 20% chance for some showers and a very light showers and they are weakening as they come in. Most of us are going to be dry. It's not going to be impactful. Whatever in a sense of the rain, but what will be impactful are the clouds. The clouds are going to keep the heat trapped and tomorrow morning will be the warmest morning this year at 79°.

[00:06:54]Not a record. The warmest low temperature, minimum temperature for tomorrow's date, the 21st of July is 85 degrees.

[00:07:02]79 is still not good. I mean, think about it. And that's just for like one hour. Then we're back in the 80s. And even with the cloud cover, we'll warm pretty quickly back into the 90s by the time we get to noon. All right, here's how some of the changes take place. And there are other areas, especially up north, where you have a better chance of some storms during the overnight hours.

[00:07:21]In fact, that one is a one out of five risk for severe weather. The yellow is at two, the two lowest. And it's for gusty winds, 60 mph, large hail, quarter size tornado threat. It's not zero, but it's close. So, here we are at 10:00 tonight. And you can see the clouds already moving out what are going to blanket us and trap the heat. The storms start rolling across the border around 3 or 4 and they could be severe at that time. You can see some magenta in there just to the east of Bethany. But then watch as they slide to the south slowly.

[00:07:55]They just kind of fall apart by 9 10 o'clock. And that's when they move through here anywhere from 9 to about noon.

[00:08:03]Look at that. Just nothing by the time we get to 1:00. So the afternoon is going to be hot once again after starting at 79. We're still going to warm to 92. Okay, you you're like, "Mike, you said a cold front's coming through. Maybe I should have said a windshift line or a mild front." 92 is five degrees cooler than today. But if you read the fine print, the humidity will be dropping all afternoon thanks to those northerly winds. So today when it reached 108 tomorrow, it's going to reach 92. It's going to feel at least 16 degrees milder. You will notice the difference even though it'll be hot tomorrow.

[00:08:42]You'll be like, "Wow, this does feel different." Wait till you see Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Speaking of difference, some dramatic changes on the way. So, 92, but the humidity drops. The temperature still stays pretty warm through about 5:00. Here's where you'll notice the lack humidity. Look at the temperature at 7 o'clock. It's 86.

[00:09:03]Okay, 7 o'clock tomorrow evening is going to be cooler than what any temperature this evening. So, that's pretty nice. And so, tomorrow evening will be a little bit better for outdoor activities. Here's where you can also see it. So, at noon, temperature at 90, feels like 92. Okay. Temperature at 2 o'clock it's 91, but the feels like temperature is about same. Same thing at 400 p.m. Same thing at 6 p.m. Same thing at 8:00 p.m. So, you can definitely see the trend of the drier air keeping the heat index or feels like temperature taking in the shade at bay, which is fantastic. We love seeing that.

[00:09:46]All right. Oh, Marcus Stone, it's too hot today. [snorts] Yes. This is why I moved to the West Coast. Uh, that's a good one. You know, because I moved from the West Coast back here. Yeah, the uh summers on the West Coast. They're pretty nice if you're close to the ocean. If you're in the central valley, no, it's not nice. It's just as hot. Can we have snow yet, DJ? Come on. That's funny. I'm looking at some of the Tik Tok comments.

[00:10:18]Can we make 6 PM nighttime? Not sure what that means. I kind of think it's like 5 to 10, 5 to 11. It's kind of the evening. And I think the way I think it, and maybe you guys think differently, is like when I go to bed, that's when it turns to night. Until I go to bed, you know, 10 or 11 o'clock, it's still evening. And evening starts at 5:00. So that's kind of if you want to know how I kind of separate things, that that's kind of the way I do it. All right. So, here's a look at our current humidity and it's 72 or I'm sorry, our current due point, which is a measure of how much moisture is in the air. 72 is muggy. Okay. When we were so hot at the end of January or January, the end of June, we were nearing 80. We were up around 78 79. That's why it felt miserable. Kind of felt like today with a much lower temperature. Watch this.

[00:11:09]This is what you want to see. This was too hot today. Let's move forward. Here we go. Tuesday, you see the cold front roll through. Look at the humidity level tomorrow or the excuse me, the Dupoint level. A lot of us in the upper 50s to mid60s. That's a bit humid. That's why it's going to feel so different tomorrow. But wait, there's more. Let's go into Wednesday.

[00:11:33]And that dry air just keeps coming in.

[00:11:35]And most of us are in the 50s, which is comfortable. It's going to feel Wednesday is going to be amazing.

[00:11:42]Wednesday is easily by far lock it down.

[00:11:48]That's the uh new term on Big Brother this season if you've been watching.

[00:11:52]Lock it down Wednesday. It is going to feel it's going to feel so so nice. Best day for outdoor activities. In fact, here's a different way to look at it.

[00:12:02]Today was unpleasant to miserable.

[00:12:05]Tomorrow's still going to be hot, refreshing. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday is going to be refreshing because we have rain on the way for those days until we get there. Unfortunately, as I mentioned, there's that little side note of smoke that is coming down with this refreshingly cooler air. Here it is at 1:00 a.m.

[00:12:27]tomorrow. And you can see it, you know, near Toronto in Canada in the east and then from about, I don't know, North Platt, it's probably probably Carney all the way back to like Oregon is where the worst smoke is. But as we head tomorrow, here we are during the lunch, our smoke our smoke's going to peak uh light to medium. Okay, more than likely that's not going to hurt.

[00:12:54]You may be able to taste it. You'll definitely be able to see it. and those that are most sensitive, you know, you may notice a little loss in breath uh when you head out during that time. So, just want to give you a heads up. And then it moves away as we head towards Tuesday evening. So, not only Tuesday evening going to be more comfortable, it's also going to be a little bit cleaner air. And then Wednesday, you know, that clean air continues to roll in. There'll still be a little smoke out there, but nothing to worry about. Here's a look at our pop.

[00:13:24]So, we know we got a 20% chance tomorrow morning. We've got a 20% chance Wednesday there's a little disturbance coming through and it's not going to have a lot of moisture and so we just wanted to put a 20 on there to say hey heads up there may be a stray shower.

[00:13:39]Nothing to worry about. Not impactful.

[00:13:40]Just didn't want you to be surprised by it. Thursday we ramp up from a 40 to 60.

[00:13:46]Okay. We've got a tropical depression in the Gulf that could soon be a tropical storm if it's not already. and we're going to tap into some of that moisture Thursday night into Friday. So, we'll have tropical showers. That means rounds of showers with heavy downpours. That's when the heaviest of the rain's going to come in. That's why we've got that flood risk at two out of four. And then Friday night, it moves on. Model differences are showing up. Here's the model we believe has the best handle. Higher amounts shows the flood risk. Also shows you can stop watering for several days if this amount shows up. and we're looking at nearly two and three/4ers.

[00:14:24]Okay, that's just a guidance. But you're looking at our lowest levels just a little over an inch to our highest levels about two and three/4ers. That's a good healthy rain. Okay, that's going to keep the temperature down. Also, here's the other model. Lower amounts.

[00:14:40]On the good side, no flood risk. On the unfortunate side, you have to keep watering because it's a third to a half inch, maybe an inch down Garnett. Sorry, I don't know why that didn't update. That's weird.

[00:14:52]But yeah, that's significantly less, right? So, we would like to have model one without the flood risk. Okay. But we do have that flood risk. Here it is Thursday into Thursday night. You can see the storms coming in from the west. Uh taking over our northwest corner, if you will. Lawrence, Letha, Lee, Summit, Odessa, Richmond, you know, up to Bethany and those areas. And then you can see it sliding east along with the showers on Friday. And that's when we're going to get the heaviest rain is on Friday. Okay, that's also going to be our coolest temperature. That's the day.

[00:15:30]Well, we're going to be close to the 80s uh 80 on Thursday. We should be close to 79 on Friday. I'll show you that in the 7-day forecast. Here's the unfortunate part. If you like this early touch of fall, it can't hang around that long.

[00:15:49]Once that tropical moisture moves on, the weekend's going to trend back to average. And then next week, we've got a really good chance of being warmer than average. In fact, a 60 to 70% chance of being warmer than average. And the average is 89. So, we're 90s are coming back. All right, here's a look at your Security Bank 7-day forecast.

[00:16:11]So for Tuesday, 92 as we mentioned, 20% in the morning, clearing in the afternoon, sunshine, hot but not as humid. 68 Wednesday morning. All right, that's not necessarily opening the windows weather, but that is going to feel so much better when you walk out Wednesday morning than when you walk out tomorrow morning. And for the kids at camp, I mean, think about how much more fun they're going to have at camp Wednesday and how much more comfort you're going to be if you have to work outside.

[00:16:39]tree trimmers decided to come today.

[00:16:41]I've been on I was supposed to be on their books last week and I knew I wanted them on the books last week because it wasn't going to be quite as hot. They came today. Thankfully, they came early in the morning. I had some damage from a windstorm we had. And I was just like, my heart goes out to you.

[00:16:56]You're working on the hottest day of the year. You're outside. It's a dirty job because you're cutting trees and limbs and getting all that on you with you know the chainsaw blowing all the uh you know the small scraps on you and I was like here have some water. That's the least I can do. Have some water before you leave. Um had I known they were coming today I might have insisted that they did not and waited till maybe Wednesday but I had no control over it.

[00:17:23]So that's what happened. All right. So Thursday not a wash out right now the way it looks. 40% 66 and 80. Okay, you're going to need a little bit of moisture for those storms. So, the humidity will rebound a little bit.

[00:17:37]That's why I'm saying Wednesday is going to be the best day for outdoor activities. Um, Thursday night into Friday, that's 60%. That's why we've got the first one because that's disruptive.

[00:17:47]I mean, think about it.

[00:17:49]Model one was showing nearly, you know, an inch and a quarter to two and three/4ers inches of rain and the majority of that falls on Friday. You know, Thursday we may get up to a half inch, but Friday, that's most of the rain. That's why it's going to be impactful. We're going to try to get it out of here Friday evening for your plans, but the way it looks right now, it could disrupt your Friday evening plans. As we head into Saturday, it opens the gate back to seasonal temperatures, 66 and 88. And then we're warmer than average again Sunday. And you could see the humidity coming back 72 to 92. And then Monday, 75 to 94.

[00:18:24]There's what we were talking about when we were looking at the Storm Prediction Center talking about how next week's going to be warmer than average. Okay, so that is your security bank 7-day forecast. Someone said rain around noon in Kansas.

[00:18:43]You'd be lucky if you get a couple of drops to be honest with you. The storms are going to be fading.

[00:18:48]Um they're going to rain themselves out for the most part behind they get here.

[00:18:52]But we just want to let you know, hey, just in case.

[00:18:56]H how can it go from very hot to nice and cool this week? It's a pattern shift in the jetream. Uh do I have can I show you that? Uh, it's all about the Canadian air. Uh, let's see. I had this somewhere and it's just high pressure sliding down and it's going to kick out this heat.

[00:19:24]There's two different types of high pressure. High pressure is not a function of temperature. So, the high pressure over us right now [snorts] is hot. Okay. See the jetream up along the Canadian border. See the hot high pressure. Okay, watch what happens.

[00:19:40]Cool air is heavier. Okay, the the warmer the air and the more humidity in the air, the lighter it is. Okay, so this is for DJC.

[00:19:55]Colder cooler air and less humid air is actually heavier. So it undercuts the warm air and pushes it out of the way.

[00:20:02]And that's what you're seeing happen.

[00:20:04]So, here's where we are now. Cool air is up to the north, but it's got a steering current. That high pressure, you can see that clockwise flow around it. That is going to tap into that cooler air and it's going to bring it right down to us.

[00:20:18]So that hot dome is actually the catalyst for turning the steering currents north over us and far enough north that we're getting our air coming down from Canada, not off the mountains where it's hot, which is what we have going on right now. So DJC, I hope that answers your question. Um because that's why it cools down in Diet Coke. How did you get to handle Diet Coke? As long as it cools down a bit, I'll be happy.

[00:20:47]I'm here to make you happy. So, I'm glad that makes you happy. Uh, so it will be nice outside on Wednesday. Yes. Yes. And why I say Wednesday will be the nicest because it will have the least amount of humidity. Even though we warmed to 84, it probably could feel like 82 or 83.

[00:21:06]The humidity is going to be so low.

[00:21:08]Thursday's not going to be quite as nice because we got the chance of storms and the humidity is going to rise just a little bit. in Friday. The first warn is to let you know, yeah, there's going to be hours that it could rain and could impact your plans. And that's why we want to give you a heads up that Friday is probably not a good day for outdoor plans. I know it's Friday. It's the weekend starting. Hopefully, that will change a little bit.
