We Had to RETHINK This Luxury Shower Build… | Part 2Added:
Hi everybody. We're back in Burlington in the shower room and we're going to finish off the rest of this bathroom which involves paneling, grouting, bit of tiling, obviously fitting the toilet, shower controls, screen. Hopefully I won't break it this time. Um, so yeah, let's get going. This whole wall is going to be made out of one panel and we need to take some accurate measurements. Obviously the window, we can open that window when the panel's held up, draw around the opening from outside and then cut that. So that's not a problem. But as I said when I was tiding this ceiling's well out of level it's running down. The floor's level.
This is level. So I'm going to take the measurements starting from the bottom because I know that's square.
And I'm going to have to sort of cut up around the pipe work up and along, you know, and get a perfect fit. Right.
So, I need to rip a straight line.
Normally, I freehand it. Um, but today, cuz we've only got three panels, you can't make a mistake. I've got the guide out of the van. Guides are good, but it's very short, so you can actually go offline. So, a good trick is to get a piece of bat and screw it to the guide. So, now I've screwed a bit of bat. You can see it's much longer and it keeps it easier to keep it straight.
I don't know why they don't make that guide bigger, but anyway, that just slots in there.
And now you can set the depth of where you want to cut to.
There's a gauge on the front so I can see that that dot is where I need to cut to. And I can just tighten that up.
And I know we can just run straight along. It give us a perfectly straight cut. Right. No time like the present.
Let's go for it.
It's as easy as that. Right, these bits are just notching for pipe work and stuff. So, now I'm going to cut across. Come in with a jigsaw. Got a really fine tooth blade on it.
Getting around the corners is way easier with one of these.
There you go.
>> All right.
>> You all right? Let me come in.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. It's on the ceiling. There we go.
In we go.
That in like that.
Now that needs to go up.
>> Lift it up.
Pack it up.
>> It's all technical stuff around here. So when we offered it up, Trevor ran outside, opened the window and marked around the window. So now we need to add the width of the window board which is inside and then going to cut it.
That should should I say give us a perfect cut around the window.
>> Uh cold going home.
>> Enough.
>> Does that mean any second?
>> No.
>> So now we're going to cut to this outside line and then when we put it in it's going to be absolutely perfect.
Quite nearly had a panic then. I thought I' gone too far.
There is our window hole.
>> Use it as a blind.
>> Let's see if it fits.
>> Right. Back to you a bit past things you do for a job. Right.
Got to come up and it was proper tie that it right. We're currently, you can hardly see it touching there. We got a small gap there and that's like affecting solid there. So, we need to shape a bit off. At last, the panel fits. Yes. Going to stick it to the wall. Um, instead of putting all the glue on the panel and then trying to carry it in, we're going to glue the wall.
Don't want a massive thick bead cuz we want it to sit right back.
We're in.
It's all cut in nice and uh we've propped in. So yeah, we're all good to go. Right. Trevor's knocked up this little worktop and put a little frame up. This is going to hold the sink.
So, I need to run some tiles around this line to the perimeter so it matches the top of where this unit's going to be.
Um, and all this is going to be clad in the same tongue and groove as the other wall.
This is just something for the tile to rest on. Stop it sliding down the wall when you put the adhesive on it and leave it.
Take it off after it's only a temporary measure.
We can now tile off that.
Put our uh trim on the top. Put a couple of spacers. Get it right exactly on the line.
And uh we're good to go. And that will stop the tile like sliding down the wall once the glue is on it. The adhesive is on it.
We can come in with our first set of tiles.
Try and get that right back in there.
Catching that typically.
side.
This is our tile trim.
That's going to sit right in there.
Right now, we need to cut our piece of trim for this length. And we're going to come in behind this that's going to be clad over the top. So, providing we get it in line with that basically that pencil line, we can go there and the cladding can come over the top. I'm going to clad the side of this cupboard worktop on there. So, all that's going to be hidden and then clad down to it.
So, it's time set our tiles in.
So, try and set it so the pattern staggered.
Don't want the same tiles all in line, do we?
Got my piece of trim.
We are in right on that line. If you can see there, we're completely flush with that timber.
Right, all that's going off nicely. Uh, next job. Let's get this panel on the wall.
need to take a load of measurements.
Uh I don't know if he wants that cable going above or behind, but we'll have to get rid of that cable clip if he does want it behind.
We'll cut this in in one big panel.
Hopefully. So, as we've done before, just want to offer our timber up just slightly over. So, that's enough to cut through there without cutting the batters underneath.
Or was it all clapped in a big pile on the floor?
And we are through.
Hopefully we got a good square cut.
Right, let's go for it.
Glue's on the wall.
So, here we go. Right, something like that.
It's been quite difficult getting these panels on.
Well, to say the least. I mean, this first one took us two attempts and probably about 3 hours. So, um anyway, so we've got that on. The box is all fixed in now.
Got this panel in.
And I've tiled all the way around the bottom.
That's going to sit in somewhere like that.
And then we've got a nice bit of old worktop that's going to sit on top of it and come in on the face of those tiles.
Something like that.
So before we mess around with all that, let's get this panel on the wall and then a little bit along the top of that door. And that's all the paneling done.
>> It's a bit cold and blowy today.
And then take the last little bit out with a jigsaw if I don't get blown away on the way back out. Last little cut.
You ain't getting better than that, right? Let's see if this actually fits.
Here we go.
We're in nice and tight.
Right, let's get some adhesive on this wall.
This is our last wall panel going in.
Quite a tight fit as you can see.
There we go.
Now we got all our walls clad. We need to clad this section. Well, down the side and the face. Um, and then put our frame in. Clad that. Then we can put the work top on. There's going to be another bit of worktop on there.
eventually and then we can grout. Then we can start putting all the stuff in. Taps, sinks, shower heads, screens. Hopefully I won't break that one. Okay, I've cut all the panels for this front cladding. I've cut them all 10 mil bigger cuz we're down to our last knockings with the uh boarding.
So, couple more slightly bigger in case anything's not square, not level or floors out or whatever.
Oh yeah, we're good on that. Didn't realize there's another pipe underneath there.
So, we can cut around that one as well.
There's me cut.
Let's see what we're fitting.
Oh, yeah. Decent. Two more slots cut for the pipes. We can push that in there like that.
I can mark the back like that.
All the way down.
And that's what I need to take off.
That's all the panels cut. I still need to make a door in that one. Um, and I can't fix this one until after I've sorted the plumbing out. But now we got this frame that's going to hold the worktop and hold the panels. So, I'm going to screw it to the wall. I've got some metal brackets that I found knocking around. So, we're just going to screw them into the wall there, into the wall there, and into that foot. That should keep us nice and secure.
Right, just releveled it cuz it was way out on top.
Now we are level both ways. All three ways.
Yeah. Forward level with you. Right.
We're in.
Can't fix this one cuz I need to sort the plumbing out for the sink. So that's going to go on after. Now we need to fit this worktop. This did originally fit.
Uh but now we've tiled this wall. glad that it's obviously way too big as you can see. So I need to get square measurement off those tiles which is what that is. Now I can measure up here for the worktop cut.
We're going to cut that there. Square it off. Well, check that square first and then cut that square. If that ain't square, then we need to cut it with a bevel gauge to get the angle. So, this is a square. Just going to put that on there. Slide it in. As you can see, it's touching the tiles and it's also running along the side of that cupboard, which means that's perfectly square, that cupboard. So, where I marked the worktop, I can now just do a square cut on the worktop and it will fit fine.
Obviously, if something's out of square and it's a bit like that, then if you cut the worktop square, it's not going to go in. Is either going to have a massive gap if this is going that way or it won't go. But we're okay there cuz we're perfectly square. Let's see if me cutting is any good.
Oh, yeah.
pucker.
Right, I'll show you what sink they're going to have. Wait there one second.
That's going to sit there like that.
probably more in central to be honest.
So that going to look nice.
Do you like that one? Once I plum it in, we're just going to gently stick that on there. So in case there's any plumbing problems in future, can be taken off.
And that's basically the look of what the cupboards are going to be.
It's quite a nice look. I think this one needs another coat of paint, but Hopefully Trevor will do that for me over the weekend. Right, it's Good Friday. Hopefully they're not all asleep indoors. Um, and hopefully it's going to be a good Friday.
So, I'm going to grout all the walls in the shower.
Um, maybe give this a coat of paint.
Cut the hole for the waist. See if we can get that up and running for this sink. Maybe a bit of plumbing. Not sure what shops are open though to be fair.
And last job's going to be grouting the floor cuz then I'm not back till Monday.
So that's got two days to go off.
Hopefully no one's going to walk in here.
So first job, we're going to grab these walls. Bit like knocking up the adhesive. Bit of water in a bucket. Pour it in as you mix and uh you're good to go. So, I've knocked up my uh grout. Can use this grouting tool.
People do it different. If you're a professional, you probably do it different, but I like to just push it in one joint at a time and clean it as I go a bit like that.
Like I say, you can do it where you're just piling it on sort of thing, if you get what I mean.
Same with these ones. We're just going to run straight in there like that.
Whack it on.
Now, you may have noticed I've not grouted the corner joint.
That's because nowadays you're supposed to use mastic in the corners. Years ago, we used to just grout everything and grout straight down there. But now, apparently, it's recommended that you use mastic. So, it's mastic on the joints. Obviously, mastic around the tray. Um, when I say mastic, silicone sealant.
Um, so yeah, that's what we're using.
So, I don't want to grout this joint and fill it with grout. So, the mastic's just sitting on top. If you leave it open, you can push the mastic and it goes in the joint and seals it better.
Right, last few tiles.
So now we've applied the grout with the squeegee side. This tool's got like a little pointy bit. Is that a technical term? Um, and that is for running in the joints. So you can see there it just cleans it out and sharpens up the edges of the tiling.
It gives you a nice neat if you get it in the joint. Gives you a nice neat finish.
So, that's the finish I'm looking for.
Anyone got any opinions on that? Do you like that?
Think it looks nice. So now a lot of that grout's gone off quite nicely.
Just want to give it a good old wipe over. You see like you've got areas like that where the smudges are sort of starting to harden.
You can in fact now's the time to give it a good clean up.
So you can see there there's some like hard bits.
That's what we're initially trying to get off. You can see there cuz if they even now you got to sort of rub them.
See if you left that eventually they would go rock hard and you wouldn't get them off. So this is mainly for that purpose.
And what you'll find is it leaves like a a haze of of white. If you can see on that sponge where it's got a bit white.
And you can just buff it up afterwards.
All the uh grout is going off in there.
I can't grout the floor yet cuz I want to do that last. So, next job is this sink.
Um Trevor wants it set the same distance front and side. So there's a bigger area here, but that's going to be boxed. I'm going to put some hand wash or something there.
So where the worktop is, obviously the plumbing's underneath. So we need to cut a hole for the waist.
So I'm just marking up the minimum size.
Doesn't matter if the hole's bigger, but the minimum size of the waist there. And also the taps that's on the worktop as well. So I'm just marking that up to get a rough guide cuz you got to go through the worktop for the water supply hot and cold. So we've got a hole cutter. It's got a pilot drill so it doesn't skip. I'm just going to put that in the middle there.
Hopefully won't burn the drill out cuz this is solid wood.
So, we need to chop some of that out with a chisel.
Or now we're through this side.
We can just come back this way.
Look at that big old thick plug.
So, we got a nice clean hole for our waist to come through and enough space hopefully for the nut on the back of the waist.
Another perfect hole and another perfect plug.
Right, that's for the waist. That's for the two towels, hot and cold, for the taps. So, now we can put our work top in position.
And you can see a hole goes right through. So that's for the taps. That one's for the waist.
Going to install the waist. This is a clicker waste. Don't know if you have these where you are, but basically that's open. You can see the little rubber O-ring in there.
That's closed.
These are good idea cuz they're easier.
We used to have like a plug that you would take out.
Um, unless you live in a high hard water area, in which case over time that piston jams.
So, you'll go like that, fill up the sink, and then when you go like that to release it, nothing happens.
Next up, let's get some taps on there.
Um, can't actually connect the waist up and everything because Vicki, Trevor's wife, she wants to stain that worktop over the weekend.
And obviously, it's easier to do it when the sink's not attached to it.
Is this what they're going for? Like a nice small mixer tap.
In England, that's a tap. in America for which I always think a weird word. What does foret mean?
For set, but yeah, we just call them taps.
Hot, cold, on and off. I know everyone thinks we all have separate hot and cold taps, but that's to be honest, unless you're in a Victorian house or it's not been updated for ages, most people have mixer taps now. Um but that what that was for was originally um you had the cold water from the mains and the hot water was coming from uh the hot tank or the immersion heater.
So you would have two separate supplies and then if you was upstairs in the bathroom for example, you'd still have separate hot and cold because you would have a cold water tank um and a hot water hot water cylinder and you didn't really want to drink the cold water out the cold water tank cuz obviously it's been in the attic for months. You know, it could be dead pigeons floating around in it or whatever. But that's why I used to have separate taps.
Try not to crack any tiles.
And hopefully the holes are all in the right place.
There we go.
I can sit wherever I want it.
As I said, Trevor's wife's going to stain this up, so I can't actually fix this down yet. That'll be Monday.
So, these are the old style taps. This one would be the cold.
It's really high pressure, so that's definitely the cold mains.
And this one would be the hot. So, you'd have one on each side of the sink. And then to get the water temperature, you sort of turn on one more than the other and then like swirl it around in the sink.
But like I say, now everybody's got mixers. Well, I mean, don't know how long this was. Probably the 80s, 70s. This was probably from probably even the '9s.
You'd have two separate hot and colds.
If you're trying to like wash your face or something, you're like one to the other to try and get could go under the hot. It's boiling. So, you get some cold, add a bit of hot, and then like But anyway, those days are over thankfully. Right. So, let me show you quickly. This is the waste, the trap.
And I've extended that pipe up and I'm going to come straight across this trap.
P can move up and down as needed. So, all we need to do now is cut a length of pipe from there to there.
Glue it in that end. Push it in there and away we go. So, that's glued. Now, if I just loosely slide that up, you can see that that now attaches once I put the collar on there. Pull it in. That's all watertight. We got a nice waist running away.
Time to grab this floor and we're going for this color which is called ash which is a sort of darkish gray bit like ash Really down to our last drags. So, we're not going to have enough grout today to grout this.
Morning everybody.
Back for the last day to finish the bits um in the shower room for the pool.
Now it has been um bank holiday weekend and Trevor's been off work and decided he prefers a different look which is fine obviously. So now, if you remember what we had before, we've got a full worktop because the one we designed before didn't have any sort of space for hand wash things like that. Um, and also wanted more of a clean line. So, we got straight across paneling. There's a panel to go on there which is just outside and has built a box. So, the meter and everything is fully enclosed underneath. And this just gives you access. You can put your hand down, switch on, switch off, whatever you want to do. Um, yeah. Oh, and he's boxed in the wires and stuff. Other than that, it's exactly the same.
So, anyway, we're going to push on, get this sink in, um, get the screen in, mastic round, etc., etc. So, yeah. Oh, and he's put some extra tiles on the face.
rather than flush with the timber and just grouted along the top cuz he wanted more of a sort of proud look where the tiles stick out which looks nice too.
Right, we're fully on there.
>> So, I've squared it up with the front of the work top.
So, all good. So, next job, fit the shower screen. As you probably know, I've got a history.
This one is a lot smaller than the one that exploded. So, um, no time like the present. We need to actually get on with it. This next clip is either going to go really well or it's going to go viral, but not for a good reason.
Right, we've got this far.
Luckily, I can pick it up myself.
I do believe we are in. I've run silicon beads up both sides.
And now you just get this like weathering strip which needs to be pushed in all the way.
and that sort of holds glass in its position.
One thing I always notice with these strips, if you're putting one in, they generally look tend to be longer, you can see it there, than the frame.
So, it's always a good idea to start at the bottom, work up, and then it's easy to cut that off with a knife. Um, obviously, you can imagine if you started at the top and went down, you're fiddling around trying not to scratch the tray and stuff like that. So yeah, bear that in mind if you're fitting one.
Our next job, well, it doesn't really need it, is to fit this stabilizing arm.
This bit sits above the glass and then that will go level and screw into the wall and that will stop, you know, the glass flacking around. Although it's it's only a small screen, so it should be fine.
So now I've put the ends on the bar and you can see I'm going to sit it just above that there.
I've got uh I don't know if you can see that glistening in the light. It's a diamond I think it's 6 mil 7 mil drill bit. Um so yeah, this will go through no problem.
Tighten these up. Don't do these too tight. I never know why they put grub screws and a tiny bit of rubber just to pull up onto some fragile glass.
You can tell I'm nervous about the shower screens after that horrific explosion again.
Just an update, I did get my money back um the next day. cuz I sent them the video.
So, always helps to film stuff. Forgot to mention earlier, all the grouting is finished.
We ran out just that last little bit.
So, down the grout edge here running into the tiles. Slightly different height. There's not a lot you can do about it. So, yeah, that looks lovely.
So, I've got some clear sealant now. I'm just going to run around on that glass like that.
Time for a nice cup of tea.
So, last couple of turns.
Now, I'm going to pour some water down.
Hopefully, it's not going to leak. I'm sure it won't. Only one way to see if it's looping.
Dryer and dryer. Yes.
This isn't uh set to slow motion. This is how long it takes for the lid to go down. By the time the lid shuts, you need another week.
Yeah.
It's getting there.
The lid actually closes faster than the uh system filled up.
Didn't think there could be anything.
So, Hallelujah.
>> Right. The final job at Trevor's bathroom is supposed to be putting the shower control on and it's got like a hose and it just clips on the wall like a handheld one that you can bit like a beach shower really. Um, nothing too fancy. However, when we put the controls on, well, the pipe work coming out isn't level, but I knew that already, which was fine cuz we had some sort of cranked inlets, so you can adjust the level.
So, we were going with that. Um, but now we've just realized that actually the collars that come to sit off the wall. Oh, by the way, these are just two isolators.
So, we could turn the water on and test everything. Obviously, they're not going to stay there. The collars that um came with it with this. So, if you took that isolator out, I mean, even with the isolator, you can see that collar's too far out.
So, we couldn't fix anything. And then we bought some shallower collars and they're still too far.
So, what we need to do is get some longer cranked inlet pipes.
I think they do one with a 65 mil thread on it and then you got to cut it all down. But we've been to all the plumbers, no one's stocking them. Um, so it's a case of having to order some. So, at the moment, this is just on handtight. The two isolators are turned off. Obviously, we're going to remove them.
Um, but yeah, I was just going to have to pop back in the week for half an hour and just fix that soon as those bits come. You didn't think I'd end the video like that, did you? Well, over the weekend I couldn't get back here, but Trevor and Vicki have been busy. Let's check out the finished bathroom.
He's put the controls on the wall for me cuz the stuff turned up early. So, that was a nice little job. And this is the color that they chose. So they finished it off nicely. Put a mirror up.
Seasideyed stuff and a couple of plants.
What do you reckon? Looks amazing. When you think what it looked like before and now you got a shower that any guest would love to use.
So yeah, if you like this bathroom or you like the video, give us a like and a thumbs up.
Um, and I'll see you on the next video.
