[00:00:06]His son, Pedro, already emperor of Brazil, became King Pedro IV of Portugal.

[00:00:12]However, ruling both Brazil and Portugal was impossible.

[00:00:17]Pedro attempted a compromise. He granted Portugal a constitutional charter and abdicated the throne in favor of his young daughter, Maria II.

[00:00:26]To stabilize the situation, Pedro arranged for his brother Miguel to marry Maria II and rule as regent.

[00:00:33]But Miguel had other plans.

[00:00:36]In 1828, he seized power, declared himself king, and abolished the constitution.

[00:00:45]Supporters of liberalism were forced into exile or rebellion, while Miguel's supporters rallied behind absolute monarchy.
