Huge 6.0 Quake Hits Chile Coast – Why Valparaíso is Shaking Again After 9 Years!

[00:00:04]Uh last night there was a 6.0 earthquake off the coast of Valparaiso, Chile. A magnitude 6.0 that occurred at 5:34 p.m.

[00:00:18]local time. This was the largest earthquake they've had in that area in uh 9 years.

[00:00:24]Uh back in 2017, there was a magnitude 6.9 close to the same location.

[00:00:32]This was a subduction earthquake caused by the subduction of the Nazca plate going underneath South America. You can see there's been larger earthquakes in this location. Back in 1985, a 3.0.

[00:00:48]Um also um a 7.4.

[00:00:52]Because this area is known for lots of earthquakes, yeah, the standards for buildings are pretty darn good. Um mostly the damage was things that fell off of shelves, things like that. I got a couple videos showing um the shaking that was going on.

[00:01:11]No tsunami.

[00:01:13]And um haven't heard anything about rock slides or anything like that. Just frayed nerves.

[00:01:22]Here's the felt reports that were sent in to USGS.

[00:01:26]Um it was evidently felt across six different provinces, so six different areas.

[00:01:33]Um you can see here, we got a magnitude six, one report from there.

[00:01:39]Another one.

[00:01:42]That was closer to the epicenter.

[00:01:45]And another one there. Here are some of the reports that were sent in to EMSC.

[00:01:52]They thought it may be a magnitude seven, but they were on the seventh floor.

[00:01:58]Um yeah, only 26 km southeast of the epicenter. So, that would be about 16 mi. We got another one, strong shaking, grade six, more or less.

[00:02:09]We were on the 19th floor.

[00:02:12]Um let's see, they felt it when they were on the beach.

[00:02:15]It was a underground noise. Yeah. Well, strong movement, extended approximately for 45 seconds without damage.

[00:02:24]Let's see, 20 seconds it was felt there.

[00:02:28]Sudden and a few seconds, a long, but strong shock.

[00:02:32]Strong, I thought it was an earthquake with um the Chilean criteria, 8.0.

[00:02:40]Um no.

[00:02:43]Okay, very strong. They have so many earthquakes there, people are pretty good at um ascertaining what they think the earthquake magnitude was. And here they said it was a six.

[00:02:55]And here's another one, it says noisy, strong, moved hard.

[00:03:01]Another one said they were on a double-decker bus.

[00:03:05]Um they're the driver, I guess.

[00:03:07]Um the bus stopped and moved quite a bit. Wow.

[00:03:11]The farthest report is 152 mi or 245 km.

[00:03:19]Um they said they didn't feel it, but here it said um smooth in the six.

[00:03:26]Okay.

[00:03:27]Um the floor shook even from the six region. Yeah, six different regions said they felt it. Um from from bed, it felt like a strong push.

[00:03:39]Another one, in the car, I saw um whatever.

[00:03:44]Um nothing to worry about unless the proverbial boss is losing it, too. You got a little waiting. I don't know. Strong and prolonged without noise in San Jose.

[00:03:59]Sleep people. I'm probably pronouncing that wrong.

[00:04:03]USGS has revised the depth of the earthquake to about 15 miles or uh 20 km. And you can see in fact yeah, it was uh a thrust earthquake caused by the uh subduction.

[00:04:17]The movement of the continents.

[00:04:19]So, yeah, sending prayers.

[00:04:27]Any earthquake does have a 10% chance of being a foreshock for something much larger.
