Artists must consider the sales context (venue) when pricing their work, as prices vary significantly across different platforms: a painting might be priced at $1,000 at a New York City gallery (with 50% commission), $150 at a local craft fair, or lower in an online shop where most buyers are not purchasing $2,000 works.

What You’re Missing When Pricing Your ArtHinzugefügt:
Many artists don't consider this when pricing their work. Your first impulse is to think about the cost of materials and your labor. What artists don't think about is context, where you're selling the work. The price I set for this painting would be different at a local crafts fair, a New York City gallery, and in an online shop. At a New York City gallery, this probably would be about $1,000. But remember that New York City Gallery is going to charge you a 50% commission. At the average local craft fair, 150 is a little bit on the high end. In an online shop, there's more flexibility, but in general, most people are not buying $2,000 paintings from a personal shop.
