An SS unit under the command of Joachim Peiper committed one of the most brutal crimes of World War II. 84 American soldiers who surrendered were shot right on the spot. When news of the atrocity reached US commanders, the reaction was immediate. The US launched a massive operation to find and punish the perpetrators. Special units, including military police and intelligence, tracked down the SS men who were involved in the shooting.
