In 53 BCE, Marcus Crassus led seven Roman legions into the Parthian desert at Carrhae, suffering one of Rome's most humiliating defeats where 10,000 soldiers vanished. Chinese chronicles from 36 BCE describe foreign mercenaries using the Roman testudo formation, settled in Liqian, with some residents having non-Chinese features. However, modern evidence including DNA analysis showing mixed Eurasian genes, the 4,000-mile distance, and the general term 'Liqian' for western peoples, suggests this may be a legend born from Silk Road cultural mixing rather than actual Roman soldiers.

10,000 Troops Gone: This was Rome's greatest defeat in warAdded:
In the year 53 BCE, one of Rome's most powerful men, Marcus Crassus, led seven legions into the scorching desert of Carrhae.
He was hunting for glory against the Parthian empire. But what he found was a slaughter. The Roman army was annihilated. Crassus was killed and the sacred golden eagle standard was captured. It was one of the most humiliating defeats in Roman history.
But in the chaos of battle, something truly strange happened.
While thousands of Romans were killed or or captured, a group of about 10,000 survivors, a massive force, simply vanished. They weren't accounted for among the dead or the prisoners. For centuries, they became a ghost story, a legend whispered among historians. Where did they go?
The mystery remained unsolved until a clue appeared from an unexpected place, ancient China. Fast forward to the year 36 BCE.
Chinese chronicles from the Han Dynasty describe a battle on their western front.
They fought against a bizarre group of foreign mercenaries. What made these soldiers so strange? Their unique battle tactic, a fish scale formation where they interlocked their shield to form a protective shell.
This was the exact description of the famous Roman testudo or tortoise formation, a tactic unknown in the East. After their defeat, these foreign soldiers were captured and settled by by the Chinese in a remote frontier town called Liqian, right on the edge of [music] the Gobi Desert.
And here's where the story gets even wilder.
To this day, some residents of that region, now called Zhelaizhai, have distinctly non-Chinese features, green eyes, [music] fair hair, and prominent noses.
Could this be the final destination of Rome's lost legion?
It's a romantic [music] and incredible idea, but modern historians and geneticists have cast some [music] serious doubt on the theory.
While the physical traits are real, DNA tests on the villagers reveal a complex mix of Eurasian genes.
This [music] isn't surprising given that this area was a major hub on the ancient Silk Road, a melting pot of cultures for thousands of years.
Then there's the issue of geography. The distance from Carrhae >> [music] >> in modern-day Turkey to the Chinese border is over 4,000 miles.
The idea of 10,000 soldiers marching that far through hostile territory without leaving [music] a single trace in the historical record is almost impossible to believe.
Finally, [music] there's the evidence itself. The name Liqian was a general term the Chinese used for people from the far west, not specifically for Romans.
And that fish scale formation, >> [music] >> it might just be a case of convergent evolution in military tactics.
Other nomadic groups in the area used similar shield wall strategies. [music] So, the tale of the ghost legion remains one of the one of history's most fascinating what-ifs. [music] Were they truly Roman soldiers who marched across a continent or just a colorful legend born from the diverse mix of people traveling [music] the Silk Road?
Whatever the truth, their story creates [music] a legendary bridge between two of the ancient world's greatest empires.
