In 1946, physicist Louis Slotin suffered a fatal criticality accident at Los Alamos National Laboratory when his hand slipped while holding a plutonium sphere with a screwdriver, causing the hemispheres to close and release lethal radiation; he died nine days later as his DNA unraveled from the inside out, becoming the second scientist killed by the plutonium core nicknamed 'Rufus' (later 'Demon Core') after Harry Daghlian died eight months earlier from the same core.
