The Titan regeneration ability from Attack on Titan is biologically more similar to cancer than true regeneration, as cancer cells multiply out of control; the 13-year lifespan curse and transferable power could be explained by a retrovirus that integrates into DNA and activates when spinal fluid enters the body, similar to how herpes hides near the spinal cord and how viruses can cause cancer by inserting genetic material near growth-regulating genes.

The Biological Reality of Attack on TitanHinzugefügt:
The ability to regenerate a decapitated head and turn into a 15 m flesh map. Is it a magical power or is it just stage 10 cancer? In the show Attack on Titan, the Titan shifters have the ability to shift into Titans and regenerate even after getting decapitated. Now, I've been studying biology in university for the past 3 years and watching the show made me wonder, could the Titan shifters actually exist in the real world? To answer that, we first need to understand their first power, regeneration. And the difference between biological repair and true regeneration. When humans get injured, we don't regenerate, we repair.
Our bodies cannot perfectly rebuild a lost tissue, which is why we get scars.
We go through four stages of repair.
Hemostasis, block the injury to stop bleeding. Inflammation, kill the bacteria that got inside. Proliferation, patch the hole with collagen. And remodeling, make the scar stronger. The goal of repair is to just block the hole so we won't die. But true regeneration is completely different. While repair plugs the hole, regeneration builds a brand new dam. Take the axolotl for an example. It fills the wound, creates tons of stem cells which can then create the new limb from scratch. But here's the catch. It can take months to regrow an entire limb from zero. But in the show, maybe the humans regenerate slowly, but the Titans, they can create tons of cellular mass in seconds. This explosive cell growth isn't regeneration, it's more similar to cancer. One of the big parts why cancer is so dangerous is because of the cancer cells multiply out of control. And the show gives us another massive clue. Once someone becomes a Titan shifter, they only have 13 years more to live, the curse of Ymir. But if we leave the Titan power as a curse and time travel power, there's no biology to do here, am I right? And not only that, the disease or the power is transferable after eating parts of the person who holds the power.
And surprisingly, there is a real world example, the Tasmanian devil. If a Tasmanian devil bites another one who has cancer, they can become sick and they get the cancer as well. Doctor's worst nightmare. So far, we covered three parts of the Titan power: regeneration, 13 years curse, and the transferability of the curse. But here we have a little problem. In the show, we have patient zero, Ymir. Thousands of years ago, a parasite, based on a real worm, attached to her spine, and it didn't just infect her, it fundamentally altered her DNA, the Eldian bloodline forever. Every single subject of Ymir is born with the potential to become a Titan, or the potential to get special grade cancer. As this little acts like a parasite and permanently rewrites to the DNA of an organism's offsprings, ladies, gentlemen, and friends beyond the binary, let me introduce you to retrovirus. Normal viruses just hijack a cell to print clones of themselves, but retroviruses are special. They have special enzymes that allow them to cut open your DNA and paste in their own genetic code. And if a retrovirus infects a reproductive cell, that viral DNA gets hardcoded into the resulting offspring. That offspring then pass it on to its own offsprings, and so on.
Today, roughly 8% of the entire human genome is made out of an entirely dead ancient viruses. So, the Eldian bloodline was rewritten by an ancient retrovirus. But why does the parasite hide specifically in the nape? And how can it cause cancer? Let's answer the first question. And here I will give you the ultimate example, herpes. Once it enters your body, it travels up your nervous system and hides next to your spinal cord, where it completely evades the immune system by rolling into a silent ball of DNA to sleep, waiting for the trigger to wake up and attack. It hides in the exact spot equivalent to the Titan nape, and it waits until the right time, or in the Titan case, waits for the spinal fluid. And now we can answer the second question. Can a virus cause cancer? And to your surprise, yes.
If a virus accidentally pastes itself directly in the wrong place, or in our case, the right place, next to the human genes since it controls cell growth, it can turn the growth genes on into a permanent overdrive. And finally, we have the biological reality behind the Titans. Every subject of Ymir carries an ancient retrovirus that has become part of their DNA. The moment the spinal fluid enters their body, the virus wakes up and the cancer is let loose. But hey, that's just a theory, a biology Attack on Titan theory. Thank you for watching.
