Just because it works doesent mean its true
Added:Hey everybody, Marcus here. So, sometimes I get a comment on one of my videos um that has that kind of uh Richard Dawkins sort of feel to it. I remember there was an interview with Dawkins once where he was, you know, questioned about how does he know that science, you know, that that science reveals truth and he said, "Well, because it works, bitches."
Okay, it works, therefore it's true.
Well, what I wanted to describe to you guys in this video is a completely fabricated story, a completely fabricated, let's just say, way of approaching weight loss that if you follow my instructions, uh, as I describe it within this makebelieve story, it will work. You will lose weight. 100% true. Even though the story is complete [ __ ] the explanation about why it works is complete nonsense because it leads to a behavior that somehow seems to result in the outcomes that the [ __ ] story promises, it will work. If you were to apply this and witness the results on your own skin and then teach it to someone else and then they follow the same instructions, they will also validate to you that it will work for them. So, this is going to be a video about diet. I mean, I lost 65 lbs in about 2 and 1/2 months. This was four years ago now. Never really gained the weight back. Um, and I will explain how I did that first through the nonsense story, then through what I believe to be more of the true story. So, I call this the magical lemon diet. Now, how the magical lemon diet works is as follows.
You see, lemons have this magical weight loss enzyme in them, right? And you can't just eat the lemon though. You know, the way it works is that the lemon juice has to contact the intestinal walls of your body directly. But that's never usually the case because we always have like a layer of fecal matter that kind of wraps around our intestines.
And because of this, if you just eat drink some lemon juice, you're not going to actually get the contact with the cell body. Therefore, you're not going to have that enzyme penetrate through the fecal matter to to get into your bloodstream. So, you're not going to lose weight. So, in order to actually facilitate the um an access the enzyme of this magical lemon is you have to not eat for 24 hours because if you don't eat for 24 hours, you know, your body will naturally conduct its bowel movements and clear up a lot of that fecal matter. So that finally after that 24-hour uh window has passed, you can drink, you know, a tablespoon of lemon juice. Wait about 10 15 minutes so that you know it gets through your stomach and it gets into your intestines and it starts absorbing into your bloodstream.
And then what you can do is eat the entirety of your daily maintenance calories for that day. So, if your daily calorie um intake uh at maintenance level is 2,000 calories, then after those 24 hours after you drink your lemon juice, eat 2,000 calories.
Therefore, technically, you should not lose any weight because every 24-hour period, you will repeat this exact exercise. Not eat for 24 hours, drink your lemon juice, eat exactly the entire contents of your day's uh calories in whatever foods you normally eat at. So you don't even have to change the foods and keep repeating this every day for weeks on end and you will 100% lose weight. I'm not making this up. You will lose weight. I'm making up the story but not the outcome, not the effect.
This shouldn't work. Why shouldn't it work? Because the prot uh the contemporary hypothesis is that it's calories in, calories out. If you want to lose weight, you have to be in a calorie deficit. While the magical lemon diet does not create a calorie deficit, right? Because you're eating maintenance. Therefore, it should not work. But it does work. Why does it work? Well, let me tell you [clears throat] another version of the same story that's more scientificy, right? That sounds more plausible. And the way it goes is as follows.
The reason you hold as much body fat as you do is because your body has this internal internal measure that it believes to be your proper weight. Namely, if you weigh 250 lbs, it's because your body believes 250 lbs is your correct weight. And we know that when people go on any sort of diet, calorie deficit diet, they'll lose some weight, but as soon as they go off the diet, they will bounce back.
Sometimes they'll go even above what they started with. So this yo-yoing effect is very well understood to happen. And the reason it occurs is because these diets don't actually reset that number within your body. So the objective here is not so much to be in a calorie deficit as it is to get your body to convince your body to lower what it believes its proper weight will be. And when you low uh when you reset that number within your body to a lower value, your body of its own valition will help you lose that weight without any exercise. Right? The way it's going to do it, it's going to burn off excess fat through uh exuding body heat. It will raise your metab raise your metabolism. It'll raise your metabolism.
We're going to describe it this way by basically just th wasting energy. By just wasting energy and what controls that number, right? So this is the most important part of this equation. What actually controls the number that your body decides is your correct body weight?
It's insulin resistance. The more insulin resistant you are, the higher your body perceives its correct weight to be. So, what you need to do is lower your insulin resistance. Now, type 2 diabetes is ultimately an incredibly aggressive form of insulin resistance.
Namely, it's so aggressive that your body can no longer generate sufficient quantities of insulin naturally in order to push the energy content from your bloodstream into your cells. Therefore, you need to supplement with insulin because your body can't produce enough.
But type 2 diabetes can be actually cured. There is a cure for it. And the cure for it is to lower your insulin resistance. Now it is typically [clears throat] it typically goes hand in hand that somebody who has type 2 diabetes is also obese or at least overweight.
And it is generally assumed that obesity causes diabetes. But that's not true at all. In fact, obesity and diabetes go hand in hand from the common root cause, which is insulin resistance. Insulin resistance causes you to gain weight and insulin resistance is ultimately what causes you to get diabetes. So being fat does not cause diabetes.
Diabetes and being fat go hand in hand because of insulin resistance.
[clears throat] So how do you lower your insulin resistance? Well, how do you lower your alcohol tolerance? Right?
Because if you drink often and you drink a lot, you're going to get tolerance.
So, you got to drink more to get drunk, right? Well, it works the same way with insulin resistance. If you want to lose your alcohol tolerance, you have to stop drinking for protracted periods of time.
Maybe not like completely, but definitely not as much as you did before, so that your resistance drops, that your tolerance drops. And it's the same thing with insulin resistance. In order to reduce your insulin resistance, you have to stop generating the circumstances in your body that cause insulin spikes, right? And this is how this works.
Your body has fundamentally three batteries that it draws energy from, right? It has the glucose content in your bloodstream, which would be um used up within about 2 hours. Then it has glycogen. And glycogen is not fat. It's a form of storage of glucose um for which your body has about half a kilo or so about 2,000 calories worth of energy stored in. It's in around the liver and near the um internal tissues. That's where glycogen usually lives. And for each gram of glycogen that your body currently stores, it needs three grams of water to pat it. That's why if you don't eat for say 24 hours, you lose weight really quickly because most of it it's water weight. Well, why do you lose water weight? Like how does that mechanism work? It's because you're depleting first the content of your bloodstream, then the content of the glycogen, which is obviously funneled through your bloodstream, right? So you can lose uh 2 kilos which is about four what four 4 and a half pounds within basically a 24-hour period of which obviously you have lost at that point zero fat. You have lost no fat whatsoever and fat is what we want to lose ultimately. Right now insulin resistance um sorry insulin spikes occur in different proportion depending on what you eat. Carbohydrates of any form whatsoever, from sugars to bread to potatoes to rice, they all cause a relatively aggressive insulin spike.
Right?
Proteins, which are necessary to life, where carbs are not, but proteins are a necessity to life, cause like a mediumrade insulin spike, and fats ultimately cause no spike whatsoever.
[clears throat] In fact, how the ketogenic diet actually works is that you eat no carbohydrates and your body moves away from using glucose as its primary source of energy and starts using ketones. Now, ketones are made exclusively out of fat. They're a cleaner fuel than actually uh carbs are, which means you're you feel lighter, your body feels more clean internally. It's hard to describe, but if you're in a ketogenic state, your body will feel quite clean. So, okay, let's say we don't want to go down the route of keto. We just want to reduce our insulin resistance, keeping the exact same diet we currently possess.
The way you have to do it this way now is by fasting, right? That's what this 24 hours before you drink the lemon juice part comes from. you have to fast because when you fast that means since your last meal you had an insulin spike and 2 3 hours later that insulin drops off down to its baseline which is higher than it should be right um and it stays at that baseline because you're not introducing any more food right for 24 hours and because you're not introducing more food no insulin reaction is going to take place so your position of insulin in your body is as low as it will be at that point in time. And if you repeat this 24-hour fast, now you can do it 18 hours, you know, intermittent fasting is what I'm getting at here, but 24 hours is the most aggressive before you go down extended multi-day fast. So, if you do uh OMAD, one meal a day, a 24-hour fast, and then eat your daily worth of calories, you will most of the time be in a state of baseline insulin because you are not having daily insulin reactions because you are consuming zero calories um throughout the day. And as the days go by, your insulin resistance decreases.
So, the baseline level is lower. And when it drops, that's also when the number your body thinks you ought to weigh reduces as well. And that's exactly the moment at which you will start emanating more body heat. Even though you're eating exactly maintenance calories, your body thinks you're too fat now. And it's going to help you lose that weight by doing well by you doing nothing and your body doing all the labor, meaning emanating body heat to burn off that excess fat until you drop to the new baseline. So if you start at 250 pounds, your body will conclude at one point, say after a week or a week and a half of OMAD, you know, you're kind of fat. Your true body weight should be 230. And then over the course of a week, 2 weeks, it's going to basically burn off the excess fat from your cells to uh to meet you at 230. And then you're going to baseline for at two 230 lbs for another week or two weeks max. And then once again, your insulin resistance has dropped yet another tier.
And now your body's going to think you ought to weigh 210. And then the process repeats and you keep on this diet because it's not a diet because what you're eating hasn't changed. Um your eating strategy has changed. We'll call it this way. So because you're on this eating strategy, um you will eventually get to a a baseline that is actually more true and representative of a healthy normal body weight. And that's probably going to be about the 12 to 14% body fat level. At which point fasting it stops to be particularly effective simply because you've gotten to a point now where your body is comfortable with itself and it thinks the little extra body fat is actually useful as you know spare energy just in case. So you're never in a state of famine. So it's always going to keep a little bit of a backup. So if you want to drive it down to 10% body fat, this is where you need to start being a bit more aggressive.
you need to either start doing multi-day fasts or also creating a calorie deficit or simultaneously going into keto or something like or eating in a ketogenic manner. Now, what you can do to even expedite all of this um reduction in insulin resistance is in addition to altering your eating strategy is taking up uh a diet. And this is what I mean.
We're not yet talk uh we can um we're not yet talking about calorie reduction, but we can say at the same time that you're doing fasting, you're also eating catogenically because if you eat keto, you're eating predominantly fats and also protein, no carbs. Meaning that when you do eat, the insulin spike is not going to be like at 100 points. It's only going to be at 50 points. So even those extra few hours where you spike your blood your insulin levels, you're going to be spiking them a lot less, right? Which means that you're going to even faster um reduce that insulin resistance for your body to help you lose that weight. And then finally, if you want to go as hardcore as I did is you start doing multi-day fasts, which have their own little benefits with relationship to autophagy. So, it's it's less about um it's less about uh weight loss at that point and more about general body health. And [clears throat] I very much recommend three-day fasts because they're absolutely awesome. If you've ever lived through a three-day fast, like gone through the process at the end of it, you feel so light, so nimble, your mind is sharp, your hands, you know, you can move in a bit more controlled manner. like it's it's hard to describe other than to say that your interface with reality improves on every level. That's basically what happens to the f to the point that even Pythagoras known for the Pythagorean theorem. Um it was stated that he would not take on any student that had not been on a three-day fast at the point where he came to be mentored by Pythagoras. Simply Pythagoras completely concluded that people who are not fasting are just too stupid to learn from him. as in when they're not on a fast, they're just too dumb. And if you do a three-day fast, you will see what that means exactly because your mind does get a lot sharper um on a three-day fast. So, what is the moral of the story here, right?
I told you the madeup magical lemon story, and if you follow the instructions of it, you will lose weight. Now, I also told you a scientific version of this story in around insulin resistance. And there's a book entitled The Obesity Code, which is actually on my Amazon storefront because I think it's a great book. So, if if you want to read like more exposition, you know, you can go buy it. Um, written by Jason Fun and he's a uh a doctor out of Toronto who basically helps people get over their type 2 diabetes. So, it's not a fat loss book per se. It's more of a diabetes book, but it translates over to fat loss as well. So, this more scientificy sounding story makes sense. And you can say, well, that's true. The magical lemon story is [ __ ] And I'm like, okay, but from my perspective, the scientificy sounding story can just be another magical lemon story. It's just more sophisticated. He uses medical language and terms that sound compelling that they actually are truth. But like I've said in my other videos, because I cannot verify any of this firsthand, I have to take testimony that this is a real explanation. To me, the magical lemon story and the fasting insulin resistance story epistemologically are the same story, right? They're they're they're literally the exact same thing.
And so this is what I mean. You can believe in [ __ ] because all you need is the magical lemon story and you just follow the instructions and somehow it's going to work. If you prefer the fasting, you know, insulin resistance story, believe that. But just do the behaviors because if you do the behaviors, it seems to generate the outcome you want. But is the insulin resistance story true?
I don't know. Maybe it is. Maybe it's just another magical lemon story.
