In 1967, Soviet cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov volunteered to fly the Soyuz 1 spacecraft despite knowing it was a death trap with over 200 critical flaws, including a faulty parachute system and defective heat shields, because he wanted to save his friend Yuri Gagarin's life and believed he would be sacrificed instead; when the spacecraft tumbled out of control and the main parachute failed, Komarov died at over 300 mph, with his remains so charred that only his heel bone could be identified, and the Soviets covered up this tragedy for decades.
