Hobbies and passions naturally evolve and change over time as individuals gain extensive experience and exposure; what initially brings excitement and novelty eventually becomes less stimulating, leading people to shift their interests toward new activities while still maintaining appreciation for their original hobby. This is a universal experience across all hobbies, from collecting knives to gaming, cars, or any other interest, where the initial discovery excitement is irreplaceable but long-term engagement requires constant novelty to sustain enthusiasm.

Is My Knife Journey Coming To An End? Knives Just Aren't As Exciting Anymore...Added:
Hey, what's going on, guys? So, today we got a heavy video. All right, I don't know what the title is going to be yet, but uh we're looking at a bunch of knives here. And uh the overall point of the video, if you don't have time to watch it, is my knife journey is slowing down. It's not coming to an end. I mean, I'll love knives until the day I die.
However, um I don't get as excited about them anymore. It's just kind of the reality of things. I know you're like, "What?
What are you talking about? You're the cutlery lover." Yeah, I love cutlery.
I've had a lot of it. So, we're gonna get into it. So, I just grabbed knives.
These are knives I still have to make videos on, reviews on. Maybe you've seen it before, maybe not. This little bush baby is kind of cool. Playing with this the other day, but uh but yeah. So, you'll see videos on these eventually.
I've used all of these, you know, various um amounts of time. But, uh, but yeah, this is just, you know, stuff in the chopping board. Some more possible reviews in the future. But, you know, there's a million different things I've I've used and I have and things come and go. And I've said this over the years.
There's been thousands thousands and thousands of knives that I've had and you guys never even saw because I do the trade thing. I've talked about this in my entire YouTube career. I don't have the money to just go and buy knives all the time. In fact, out of this entire table, you know how many knives here I bought?
Um, not one, not one of the I didn't buy any of these. I traded for all of this stuff. So, the first thing I could say is trades have definitely slowed down just because I am just not available as much. That's just what it is. You know, when I was just doing YouTube and I was working at home and and that was it. I had all day to work out trades like to constantly message people back and forth. Hey, what do you have? What do you have? Okay, how about this? How about that? And you know, negotiate, boom, done. Okay, I agree. I made notes.
I packed everything up all day back and forth at the post office. So, like I did that for years and years and years. Now, I just don't have the free time. It's just not logistically possible to trade as much as I have. So, knives coming in, knives going out has definitely um slowed down because of uh my my less free time that's available, but it still happens. It still happens every single week. I'm still working on trades. Um so, yeah. So, let's get into the meat and potatoes of the topic. Knives. I love them. As I mentioned, I always will. I love trying things, but it's just my interest in them has taken a backseat. It's always been just my my top priority. Um, I would say since I was like 12 years old, I just I have many, many hobbies. You guys know that.
Now, I can say that if I can go way back in time, instead of naming myself cutlery lover, which by the way, if you don't know, I came up with that for knife forums username years and years and years ago. I don't know how old I was, maybe maybe 12, 13 years old. And I love knives and the internet was, you know, kind of a new thing. And I found this place called Knife Forms, you know, and blade forms. And there's all a bunch of them. There were online forums which is just a place you go and you type. You you have a message, you have a title and a message and people comment on it.
There different threads and you you know you can add pictures or add a video or whatever. And I had to come up with a name to join this site.
I'm like ah what do I do? It's it's all knife related. You know I love knives.
Hey I love knives. Uh I love cutlery.
I'm a cutlery lover. Boom. That's how I was born. That's it. 12 13 years old. I am now cutlery lover. So, I was on Night Forums and at some point I wanted to show someone how to make a fire cuz I just learned from watching some survival show how to make fire from flint and steel. Wow, amazing. Super cool. So, I was trying to explain it to a guy in Knife Forums and he's like, I don't understand what you're saying. I'm like, damn. I'm like, you know, maybe I can make a video. So, I looked online and this somewhat new website called YouTube was a place you can post videos for free. Awesome. I didn't even have a video camera. I had a a point andoot camera just like you take on like vacation, just a little box and it took pictures, but there was an option for videos. The videos didn't even have sound. It was a soundless video, a mute video. So, I had I think it was my sister maybe holding the camera at the time and I made a video of making fire from flint and steel. And I had a little piece of char cloth and I had my little flint and I had my little steel and I'm sparking and sparking and it was lit and I put it on thing. And so that was like my first YouTube video. I uploaded it to YouTube. But guess what? I have to make a name for YouTube now. Ah crap. All right. Well, I guess I'll just write Color We Lover cuz that's what I'm known now on the internet. Boom. That's how the name was born. That's how the YouTube channel was born. Posted my video. Very first video. No sound.
Making fire from Flint Steel. Shared the video on knife forms. Then the rest is history. Someone saw the video and then another person saw the video. Then I think I got on topic of knives and someone said, "Hey, you know, do you have any more knives?" And I said, "Do I have any more knives? You're in for a treat. I have lots of knives." So I started making videos on knives.
Then what else do you have? You know, well, I like Zippos. All right. So, I made Zippo trick videos and I made bow song flipping videos and then and it just it grew and grew and grew because as people started to engage and people started to subscribe and there was more comments and more messages cuz back then you could send messages on YouTube. I got requests, hey, can you do this? Hey, can you do that? And it never ended. 18 years later, I still get messages every day. Hey, can you do this? Hey, can you do that? And so, you know, all these years I did what people wanted and then I also just did what I wanted. And that's what you're looking at right now.
That's my channel. So, even though I love knives just as much as I did when I first got into them way back when, what's changed is that I've had so much experience with knives that it's I don't know. It's just I don't want to say it's not as fun or exciting because I love getting a new knife and trying out. I really really do. But I'm not obsessed over it like I used to be, you know? And it might be hard to understand that.
Some people do. Some people's knife journey is like as small as a month.
Some people's knife journey is a couple years. Some people's knife journey is their entire life. Right? What do I mean by your knife journey? What I mean is that when you first see a knife, someone has a knife and they take it out and you're like, "That is really cool. I want to get one of those." And so you do and you love it and enjoy it, but then eventually you're like, "Well, I saw another knife that's super cool. I want to get one of those." And you do. And it just it keeps going and going and going.
You keep seeing cooler and cooler knives and you get more and more knives. That's your journey. And then towards the end of your journey, right? Let's say you're at like 99%, you're like, you know what?
I have some cool knives. I'm I don't really like knives anymore. Like, I'm done. I don't have to keep getting cool knives. How many how many knives can I get? Right now, your journey's over. You have your little knife collection. You use them, whatever. Or maybe you just display them. That's your knife journey.
It starts with, "Oh my god, that's so exciting. I want them." And then you're like, "Oh, I want that one. I want that one. I want that one." And then you eventually get to, "Well, okay, I tried a bunch of them. You know, I'm kind of over it. Now I like cars." Or, "Now I like watches or whatever it is." That's your knife journey, right? So, for me, I feel like I am like here. You know what I mean? There's still lots of stuff I want to try, but I have tried I mean, I I I don't have a number. I wish I did. I wish I can give you a number. Like I have held 20,000 different knives or 40,000 different knives. I don't know if it's that that high realistically when you really think about it. It's it's in the thousands for sure, but is it like 8,000 knives, you know, or is it more like 25,000? I have no idea. I really couldn't tell you. But I've had a lot. I've literally had thousands. Whether I've I've owned them, whether I used them, whether I just touched them in a show or something or as a friends or whatever, I have handled thousands and thousands of knives.
Everything you think of from the teeniest tiny little knife to the biggest giant sword, you know, everything in between. Folding knives, fixed blades, you name it. I've always focus more on folding knives compared to fixed blades, but um but I love it all.
If it has a sharp edge, I like it.
That's why I use the name cutlery lover because I love all cutlery. By the way, it's so funny because when I say cutlery lover, people think like non- knife people, they always think cooking.
They're like, "Oh, you like cooking?"
I'm like, "Yeah, but that's not, you know, it's not what I'm talking about.
It's not like, you know, kitchen knives specifically. It's just all knives." Oh, okay. Okay. But people automatically they relate the word cutlery to kitchen knives, not just like, you know, pocket knives or hunting knives or anything like that. But anyway, so like the point here, I'm not I'm not trying to like say, "Hey, I'm like over knives. You won't see knife videos anymore." That'll never happen. As long as there's a YouTube, as long as I have a channel, I'll share new knife content always. But what I'm saying is that like after you experience just so many knives, it's not as exciting anymore. I don't know. I I feel like precious metals has almost taken a front seat to my hobby priorities. Not that I'm stacking or anything, but just what's exciting to me. You know what? I mean like silver and gold and stuff that never got dull and I've liked that not nearly as long as I've you know like knives but I've liked it for many many years and I it's just something like I'll randomly think about whereas I'm not thinking about random knives anymore. I'm not as into the community because I don't have the same exposure. I don't have the time to watch other videos about knives or hear about knives. Every time, you know, Bladees show rolls around. I see the new stuff. It it just seems like it's less and less exciting. You know what I mean?
It's just because I've been around it for so long. That's all it is. It's just you have so much exposure. I'll say this, like if you know cars, you know, there's a lot of guys out there and girls now, but that you like certain cars and you have like a dream car.
Well, imagine if you can get your dream car. What do you want next? Well, I'm sure you'll find another car. It's cool.
Okay, you get that one, too. Like, what if you could just have every car you ever wanted? Now you have a garage with, you know, 130 cars in it. Are cars still exciting? Like when you can like I can honestly say right now and I'm not saying this as some kind of a flex or anything. This is true. I can have whatever knife I want on the planet that it's available. I'll say that there's definitely some knives out there. It's just literally unattainable because they don't exist. Right. I'll tell you one knife I always wanted was the knife from the edge. The movie The Edge with Anthony Hopkins is my favorite movie.
It's literally my favorite movie. And he has a pocket knife in there. It's a custom knife. The designer died. there's not that many out there. That is probably my grail knife at this point.
Um, but there's just so few and they're not for sale. It's just it is what it is. You know what I mean? So, I I've lost the interest in trying to obtain one of those many years ago. But that truly is probably my grail knife. So, I can play with that literally that knife in my hands while watching the movie would be like I totally geek out over that. Um, but yeah, that and in fact the maker, he made the knife in the movie and then people wanted copies of it, but he didn't even make that many because he didn't like doing it. In fact, at some point the maker, he refused to redo that knife because he's like whatever. It's just I have other stuff, you know. But anyway, uh I'm just saying like it's just not as exciting. It's still exciting, don't get me wrong. I know people, oh my god, Jeff doesn't like knives. No, that's not the case. I'm just telling you it's just you have to relate to anything else, you know? I I I could seriously any knife you tell me that's available for sale I can obtain. And what I mean by that is let's say there's a knife that's I don't know $2,900 or something. I don't have $2,900, but I have $2,900 worth of knives I could sell and raise the cash and buy the knife. It's just do I want to do that? Do I want that knife bad enough where I'm going to sell all these other knives to get it? Probably not.
You know, can I work out some kind of trade? Maybe, maybe not. But again, I can raise the money if I truly wanted to. Even if there's a knife that was like $20,000, I know it sounds ridiculous, but I can probably sell my whole knife collection for $20,000 and or whatever and get, you know, I can make it happen. It's just how much do I want to make it happen? Like, if you, like I said, if you like cars, let's say you like, I don't know, a 1985 Mustang, you know, or something, you can have one, you know, it's just, are you going to sacrifice certain things in your life to obtain it? Like maybe you want it, but you don't want it that bad. Does that make sense? So anyway, my point is that I've had many Grail knives. Many knives I'm like, "Oh, I really want to get that. Oh, I really want to get that.
Oh, I really want to get that." And I just got it, you know? So that it loses its luster a little bit year after year, knife after knife after knife that you get like, "I really want that knife."
And then I get that knife, I'm really excited that I know I'm going to get it.
I'm super excited. It's in the mail. Oh, it's in the mail. And then when that package arrives, oh, you get the package and you're like, "Oh, my precious." And then you open it and, you know, take the knife out and you fondle it and you're like, "Oh man, this is exactly what I thought it would be. It's wonderful. Oh man, look at that. Wow." And then what do you do? You put it down and you go online, you think of a new one you want to get. When does it end? It doesn't. It doesn't end because when you have a passion for something, it never gets old. Now, even though I have a passion for knives, it's starting to get old to me, as as strange as that sounds. And it's not it's not a negative thing. It just is what it is. You know what I mean? Like, I just accept it. Now, here's another thing that's changed, too, is that when I trade for knives, someone might give me a list of 25 knives, and they're like, I this is what I have available.
Are you interested in any of them? And I look at that list, and I've had 22 of them. Do you know what I mean? like it makes it harder and harder to get something that's new. Now, granted, even though I've had so many knives, there there's so many more that exist. You know, I haven't scratched the surface.
There's just so many knives, period. You know, there just millions there's millions of production knives, millions and millions of custom knives. There's knife makers you've never heard of. No matter how much you know the industry, there's always going to be knives you've never seen or heard of. But you have to understand, too, just like cars, all car, well, not all, but most cars have four tires. They mostly have an engine, right? Some seats. It's like there's commonality. Every knife that we know has a blade, right? That's what makes it a knife is a sharp edge. Um, if it's a folding knife, it has a handle. Um, even though it could be one piece, normally it's two pieces. There's certain commonalities where it's like, well, how much variety can you really get? You know, like you have this knife from Buck. If I change the shape a little bit, okay, that's a different knife, but it's mostly the same. When you have so many knives, they're just mostly the same. There's not that many ideas.
There's not that many changes. That's why I focus so much on like an interesting locking mechanism or something like on this Cold Steel knife, right? We have a knife with a liner lock, but there's also this switch which locks the liner lock. That's kind of cool. It's something a little bit different, right? It makes it a little bit more exciting.
So, anyway, kind of beating a dead horse here. I think you kind of get what what I'm saying. I love me some knives, but it's just I don't know. It's not as exciting as it used to be. When things are new and fresh, it's exciting. It goes with any hobby, any interest you have. It could be any literally anything. Even like gaming. I was talking to someone the other day that they love gaming, but it's just like it's kind of boring now. Just years and years of playing the same games and doing this and it's like nothing new comes out that's that different. And it's just kind of boring. They kind of gave it up, you you know, and they're like, I I know I call myself a gamer and I like to game, but I just don't I don't find the same enjoyment as I used to.
That kind of thing, right? So, I was relating with them and that's what, you know, made me think of making this video is just, you know, maybe some of you guys can relate. Some of you guys, and I've talked to people like this who used to watch my videos literally. Hey, I was, you know, 15 years old. I got really into knives. I watched your videos. I loved it. I got, you know, this, that, and the other thing. And then, you know, then I'm like 25 and, you know, I don't know. I had a wife and a kid and I just didn't I don't know. I didn't have time for knives as much. I didn't learn as much about it like I used to. I didn't watch as many YouTube videos or whatever. And they just kind of fade out of the hobby. It's It's very sad, but you just love it so much and then it just kind of fades away and you like new things. Life is about experiences, enjoying different things, right? Some people can enjoy the same thing forever. Other people need the variety. I have so many hobbies. I I will always have variety. And like I said, as much as I love knives, I really think it just took a slight step down where my favorite hobby really is like silver and gold, you know, some different coins and stuff like that.
It's just I don't know. It excites me just a little bit more, ever so slightly. But like I said, I'll never I'll never get over having a new knife and trying it out, thinking it's cool and wanting to cut stuff. I just I love cutting stuff and playing with knives. I always will. But uh I thought I'd share that with you. It's just uh you know part of my life my life experiences. So that's it for now. Thank you so much for watching. Let me know what you think down below. Um again, it's not extreme.
It's not like I'm getting over knives.
I'm not quitting the hobby or anything like that. I just just sharing my thoughts and opinions. That's all. It's just I don't know. It's feeling a little lackluster lately. Maybe the industry has slowed down a little bit with new and exciting things and innovation. You know, when when something's new to you, it's so exciting. You want to learn everything about it. I'm sure everyone can relate with that. No matter what it is, whether you got into cooking or cars or, I don't know, you know, collecting marbles, whatever it is, whatever your thing is, when you first discover it, it's its most exciting. You can never recreate that. It's like the first time you have sex, you know what I mean?
Like, it's like, I heard all about it.
Now I did it. Wow, that that was something, right? I'm not saying, you know, sex gets old because I think that's always just as exciting, but maybe that was a poor example. Um, I don't know, hobbies. Let's get back to hobbies. So, yeah, maybe you got a gun and you're like, "Oh, this is so cool."
And you shot the gun. It's Oh, it's amazing. I want this gun. I want that gun. And then maybe you have the opportunity and the luck where you've had 800 different guns and now it's kind of like, "Okay, it's just it's another revolver. All right, different grips.
Whatever. Oh, it's another another 1911.
Okay, I get it's kind of like I get it and I get it feeling. You need something that's totally different or or innovative to get excited over it, you know? And that's kind of where I am with knives almost. So anyway, that's all.
Thanks for watching. Hope you guys have a wonderful day and um I will see you soon with another video. Take care.
