Chemical indicators are substances that change color in the presence of acids or bases, allowing us to identify the nature of a solution. Blue litmus paper turns red in acidic solutions and remains unchanged in neutral substances, while red litmus paper turns blue in basic solutions. Phenolphthalein indicator remains colorless in acidic solutions but turns pink in basic solutions. Bases are characterized by their slippery, soapy texture and release hydroxide ions when dissolved in water, whereas acids are sour in taste (though mineral acids should not be tasted due to their corrosive nature). These indicators help distinguish between acidic, basic, and neutral substances through simple color change tests.
