Michigan State football's recruiting strategy emphasizes patience and trusting the process, as the program currently sits outside the top 50 in national rankings with only 8-9 commitments after two official visit weekends, but maintains a 17-18 commitment goal by season's end through early spring visits and high-priority targets like four-star prospects Caleb Johnson and Anthony Cartwright, while also pursuing versatile defensive recruits like Lawrence Kanneh and Dallas Ward who can play multiple positions.

PANIC OR PATIENCE: MSU football recruiting off to SLOW start? | Corey Laga headlines weekend visitsAñadido:
Michigan State football right now as it stands outside the top 50 in recruiting rankings. Are we panicking, which we never do on this show, or should we actually be patient here and trust the process?
>> You are Locked on Spartans, your daily podcast on the Michigan State Spartans, part of the Locked On podcast network.
Your team every day. I'm Matt Sheen.
Thanks a lot for kicking off your weekend with Locked on Spartans, part of the number one ranked Locked On podcasting network. Guys, on today's show, it is all things recruiting and we've dragged him back on. That's right, the one, the only Jason Killip of Spartan Mag because we are in the middle of two massive weekends for Michigan State football recruiting. They just had about a dozen visitors last weekend.
They're going to have about a dozen more this upcoming weekend. And in the middle of all that, we have a linebacker commit that we have to talk about. But first things first, let's hop in the blimp.
Let's take a 30,000 ft view of Michigan State football recruiting because Jason, right now, uh, on Rivals, the the website that you proudly work for, uh, Michigan State is outside the top 50 nationally in the recruiting rankings right now. If you just want to zoom in on the conference, they are 14th in the Big 10. And right now they are just one of four Big 10 schools with less than 10 announced commits. Purdue, Illinois, Maryland being the other three. Uh look, it's awesome to be patient. It's awesome to trust the process.
I'm also kind of leaning towards the should we be panicking camp. Jason, you're much more measured than I am. You uh you're a you're an adult. How should we be feeling about Michigan State recruiting right now? because I feel like the fan base as a whole is kind of split on how to feel right now. What's what's going on?
>> Yeah, I understand uh the anticipation for the official visit season has has gotten the best of some fans, I think.
And as far as when you see recruits coming off the board, that's a a completely normal thing that's happening across the country. But it is frustrating when you when there's some highle targets that Michigan State did not land. Um, but luckily so far from the first weekend of of all the visitors that came on campus, only one of them came off the board and that was defensive lineman Ronaldo Perez Indiana over Michigan State and Ohio State and some others. And >> uh, that was a recruitment going into things where it was always going to be kind of hard for Michigan State to land that one. I know um, not a lot of MSU fans love to hear that, but with Indiana and Ohio State in the mix, especially for a kid from Columbus, uh, >> I've always had my eyes on Ohio State.
Indiana did a really good job uh beating out Ohio State for Perez and he's a really talented prospect and that's a recruitment that I do think Michigan State was running in in the mix for but it just was going to be a hard one to overcome those schools right now and and the momentum that they have on the recruiting trail of course the two most recent national championship winning programs and teams that that don't struggle with NIL that's for sure and >> no >> so there's there was a couple guys on campus this weekend Michigan State's fighting a good fight for including offensive lineman Caleb Johnson a fourstar are uh Indiana's pushing for him as well and he's from Indiana. So again, another tough recruitment, but I think MSU fans, there was some frustration in prior cycles that Michigan State wasn't getting involved with these types of recruits and now that they are, they're not easy to win.
So there's some frustration when they go to other places. But I think with those two guys, Michigan State's hanging in the mix, fourstar tight end Anthony Cartwright, he has family connections to the program. That's another one that just to temper expectations. I really don't see Michigan State leading that one. But >> it's it's a recruitment that Michigan State's in there worth it's worth fighting for and as long as the kids being respect receptive and Michigan State's in that top list, why would they not um continue pursuing and and seeing how dominoes uh fall throughout other programs and other recruiting classes.
So those guys will all remain on the board. Uh four star safety Gideon Gash, another name that everyone is really excited about. And again, he's considering Texas Tech, Oklahoma, um Michigan, plenty of schools that it's not going to be an easy recruitment to win. There's some family connections there, and Michigan State's giving it it all their all. The visit went well over the weekend. All these guys came away impressed with Michigan State, of course, and not very many official visits go wrongly, but but uh >> of course, yeah, >> but I think um there's no reason to hit the panic button yet. I mean, I don't I don't know if Michigan State will strike out or or or if they lose all of those guys, then maybe there's reason to be upset. But I think just in general, um this class has eight commitments, soon to be nine. Um all guys that the staff has prioritized early on, um got through multiple spring visits and in in official visits. So, anyone who visited this early on the first weekend of June, that's a high priority target for Michigan State. So them being able to close in on any of those good guys the staff likes and uh like I said though they're about to be at nine commitments and after this weekend I'm sure that number will continue to rise and I think ideally around after official visit season you want to be around 17 to 18 commitments around there and fill out your class in the fall with the rest.
So, I think things are on pace for them right now and and uh yeah, it's just it's it can be frustrating with some of those elite level recruitments and just where the program is at trying to fight with those uh highle elite programs.
>> So, 17 or 18 is what you want to aim for at the end of official visit season.
They just come out of last weekend with just two commits. Now, one has been announced at the time of recording. That is linebacker Matthew Brady, who I like.
We'll get more in on him later, but is there any concern that they're going to hit that 1718 number here, saying that they just left last weekend with only two commits? Do you think that should have been a higher number? Is that a number where you see the fans on Twitter almost like myself? Uh kind of be like, uh oh, I was hoping that'd be like four or five commits out of your first weekend or is everything going according to plan here? Is is is it all just good in the hood right now in East Lancing? I think with those guys that we touched on earlier, the four stars on campus, I think a lot of those guys we knew going into things probably weren't going to close things down this weekend, but I could agree with you there where there's a couple of the other guys down at the bottom of the the recruiting list where Matthew Brady, he decided to commit to Michigan State. Then there's a couple others. Michigan State's pushing really hard for instate Detroit safety Don Spillers. He'll head to Illinois next weekend. that one. I mentioned on Spartan Mag a couple times heading into the visit that I had my eyes on him and the chance that maybe Michigan State would push hard for a commitment throughout the weekend. Sounds like he's going to go to Illinois. Um, but that doesn't mean Michigan State's out of things. Michigan State's still in the mix there. Uh, linebacker Henry Sakis from Illinois. Michigan State sits really well with him post visit. Uh, he he was supposed he's got visits planned to Northwestern or Nebraska and Illinois, but uh, sources we're keeping a close eye on that one to see if he makes those trips. Okay. And then uh quarterback Kaden Battle uh he had a really good visit to Michigan State as well and he canceled upcoming trips to Stanford and uh Kansas State. So now he'll visit Pittsburgh and make a final decision. So those are three guys right there that I think decisions could come in the in somewhat near future. Um for for Spillers, it'll be Michigan State or Illinois most likely. And for Battle it'll be Michigan State or Pit. And for Silakis, we'll we'll have to wait and see. But all three of those guys could potentially come off the board and raise that number of commitments from the first weekend, but they just weren't immediate commitments following the weekend. So, we'll have to continue to follow those recruitments and and see where they go. But I could see the number rising from two to two to three or four from this first weekend by the end of the month.
>> And we will talk about the great visitors coming on campus. Again, I'll say it one more time. We are going to talk about Matthew Brady here and other prospects that they are in good standing with. But not to be negative, Nancy, but this was one of the bigger storylines, not just on this show, but I feel like Michigan State recruiting circles is that oh man, defensive line recruiting could see an uptick here because we have fourstar Miles Smith scheduled for a visit. Marvin Newwat, a four-star defensive lineman, fourstar Ronaldo Perez. We also got fourstar Nhemia Ombi.
Now, those four guys I just named that were scheduled to visit, my Smith visited Oklahoma instead. Marvin Detstop committed to Miss. Rinaldo Perez, as you said, commits to Indiana. And then Ombi, he visited Missou last week instead of Michigan State. I feel like defensive line, what was a promising storyline is now unraveled. Now, of course, we have fourstar Omi Azula locked up. He will be visiting this weekend, too. Marcelus Young Casario, a three star that I really like. he visited last weekend, but oh man, it's safe to call that a bummer maybe for defensive line recruiting because I really thought that we'd be celebrating a really strong defensive line class and now it could just be a a solid class at best I feel. Is that just mean? Is is is that just too much of a Debbie Downer Jason or is that kind of the story right now?

>> No, each one of those guys that you mentioned was a bummer to to to see fall off the official visitor list. And I I agree. There's definitely reason to to to be upset about that. It's not not ideal for sure. about Michigan State at least this weekend they have the one good thing is they did cast a large defensive uh line board all the way across as far as with all those cancellations they still did have Marcelus Young Casario over the weekend who you mentioned and then this upcoming weekend Ohio defensive end edge rusher Lawrence Kenna will be on campus from the Columbus area and then also uh Georgia defensive strongside defensive end maybe maybe projects to move inside into the interior but Dallas Ward of Peach Tree Georgia he'll be on campus this weekend as So that's two defensive line visitors coming up this weekend.
And then the last weekend of June, June 19th, 2021, um on three national writer Alan TR posted that uh Cincinnati commit Xavian Smith will visit Michigan State from Youngstown, Ohio. He's a defensive tackle prospect. And then as of now, June 19th, edge, defensive end edge, uh Chris Casky is supposed to visit as well from Illinois. Um so those are the guys that remain on the visitor list at the defensive line. And so I agree with you.
There was definitely some disappointing hits. Some guys that were definitely high high up and up in the top of the board that went to other places, but at least there's a large uh defensive line board. A lot of these guys, Michigan State and uh defensive line coach Winston Data Borde Debo.
>> I was going to say good for you to try the last name. It's it's Debo around these parts for me. There's no shot I'm trying that last name ever again.
>> Debo Andrew Bindle Glass the Rush Ends.
They said a large board in the spring and that that's coming to fruition for them here with the visits at uh with those guys coming off the board. They still have a few others. I think the defensive line class will probably finish with around four to five guys. I think for another another rush end type and then probably a defensive tackle type and then I'm pretty sure that would be about it unless they really find a prospect they they love. But a fourman defensive line class, especially one with uh Oh my Oza in it and Jack Scheler, I think those are a good that's a good start and uh we'll have to see how the rest of the board shakes out with some some interesting options out there. And and I I know you mentioned it, but I really do like Marcelus Young Casario as well. So >> yeah, totally see where that recruitment um goes in the future.
>> Now Georgia Tech and Georgia are still on Young Casario's list, right? Or is anything been updated ever since?
>> Both of them are still on his list. both of them have continued to pick up defensive line commitments. So, that's something definitely to just to keep an eye on. Um, I don't know. I'd have to do more research and talk to some of the Georgia Georgia Tech writers to see how many they exactly plan to take, but I know both schools continue to to add commitments at those positions. So, it's worth something worth watching. And um he's also scheduled to visit Arkansas at the end of the month as well. So, that's something to keep an eye on.
>> So, let's talk about the commitment. It is Matthew Brady. Now, I will say Papitzger Gerald, he tweeted out two commitment gifts, but yes, Matthew Brady is the only one that is publicly announced. Now, we talked about Matthew Brady last week with near dear friend of the program, Justin Sind. And the question was, what diamond in the rough of visitors would you like a commitment from? And Matthew Brady was both of our answers here. 6'4, 215 pound linebacker, so he's got a solid frame he can of course add to, but he is a three-star linebacker from Illinois. What makes him the diamond in the rough is that on Rivals, on 247 Sports, basically wherever you look, he's outside the top 1,000 nationally, he's outside the top 100. But there's other Big 10 schools after him, like Illinois was after him, Northwestern after him, Nebraska, Minnesota after him. And really, Jason, it kind of just boils down to this. If a staff of Patitzgerald, Joe Rossi, and Max Bola like a linebacker a lot, I really don't care what the rankings really say. I'm just going to take their word for it. I'm sorry if I just boiled it down to something so simple and elementary, but it's kind of a line of thinking that I'm going to be okay subscribing to. Uh, so I really like the Matthew Brady pickup right here. What do you like about him or what do you know that the staff likes about him? Jason, >> yeah, it was a great pickup for Michigan State. Just a long versatile defender.
He can play multiple both of the linebacker positions. He can possibly continue to grow and see some time on the edge at defensive end. And he's 6'4, 215 pounds. He told me that he's gained 15 pounds this off season and he's just >> continuing to add mass to that weight or to that frame that he has. And uh he's a quarterback for his high school as well, which I always think is is interesting.
He's he's a guy he's proven on the defensive side of the field. He can read the field well. And I'm sure that that quarterback background has played a factor into that. And it was really important for Michigan State to be able to close him down. U right after his visit, he was scheduled to go to Northwestern and he posted his visit graphic onto Twitter and it looked like he was headed to Northwestern. So then then next thing you know he's committed to Michigan State. So be able to close him down before he continued on with his visit slate is a big deal for Michigan State and he was going to go visit Nebraska and Illinois as well. Two schools that have done well with their linebacker evaluations in the past. And I going into the trips I I personally viewed Nebraska as the biggest threat.
Nebraska hadn't been making a pretty good push for him. So it's always good to to beat a Big 10 foe and and to get a guy like that high priority guy. and he told me back in the spring when um Max Boa came down to watch him work out, one of the biggest things they were working on was his change of direction and his coverage ability.
>> Okay.
>> I think Michigan State that's one of the things that they must have they must Boa was able to take back to the staff and they must have liked what they saw. And he's at 6'4 215 pounds. He has an over 10 foot broad jump. Um he ran 4540 in at the Under Armour combine earlier this month. So he's explosive athlete at that size. And I wonder what that means for his projection down the line. Maybe, like I said earlier, maybe he continues to add frame mass to his frame and can move into the to edge rusher position.
Or maybe he sticks out at linebacker and is just one of those lengthy uh coverage linebackers.
>> That's kind of where I was thinking, too, because I saw the same uh Under Armour numbers that you did with just a tick north of 4540. I'm like that like that's not elite elite, but that could certainly play here. like we've we've certainly seen worse around the Big 10 and also here in Michigan State as far as guys that want to play coverage linebacker. So, I feel like maybe that's the trajectory he's going to go on, especially with that 6'4 frame.
>> For sure. No doubt. Especially when a lot of high schoolers, they don't know how to run the 40 correctly and things like that. So, 40 a lot of times 40 numbers aren't always the um most accurate, but when you put up that kind of numbers, it's hard to argue with that.
So from one linebacker to another. Now this kid has not committed but you had this last week is that fourstar Notre Dame commit top 300 kid Amari Irvin visited Michigan State last week. Now as I said he's been committed to Notre Dame and he's been committed for a while since last November. And if that last name rings a bell well yes he is the son of Michigan State running back legend Cedric Irvin. Jason is is this legit?
Could Amari actually commit? Did he just want to go back to his dad's old stomping grounds? Did he just want to check in on his old coach, Max Bola? Or is there actually reason to maybe even dream a little that they can flip this Notre Dame commit legacy prospect, might I add?
>> Yeah, I think it is legit. Um, from talking to sources within the ON3 network and the um Notre Dame website that it didn't sound like the Notre Dame staff had made been made aware of this visit to Michigan State.
>> Interesting. Okay. So when I think that overall I think it's looking less and less likely that Irvin ends up in the Notre Dame class. Now I don't know if that means he ends up in the Michigan State class. Uh it sounds like Texas A&M and Missouri are also pushing for visits as well this month. And those are two schools that I think uh offer could offer some nice NIL packages and things like that. So it's going to be a hefty competition for Urban and Michigan State. Um obviously it's good to get him on campus over the weekend. He has a strong relationship with Max Boa.
Obviously, Max Boa came from Notre Dame and that's where Irvin committed he committed to Max Boa back in November of last year and uh they pair have a good relationship and Irvin and the Boa family and the Urban family know each other well. So, >> those are there's the family connections there, but I would definitely keep a really close eye on&m and and Missouri in in those visits. Uh, as far as that, but Michigan State has obviously mentioned Brady at linebacker. They're they're running well with Henry Sakis.
And then this weekend, uh Missouri commitment Caleb Green will be on campus. So between those four linebackers, I could see I think Michigan State would likely only take three at the tops. So it'll be interesting to see where that board shakes out as well with those those four guys.
>> Well, that's exciting to keep an eye on it because yeah, I I did like a not even a double take. It was a triple take when when I saw it come across my timeline like, "Okay, cool. We'll take that." Um, look, let's look ahead to this upcoming weekend because it's another long list of visitors here. And making up a good chunk of this list for this upcoming weekend are guys that are already committed to the green and white here.
We're going to have Jack Scheler, quarterback Eli Stump, are going to have both offensive lineman Jack Carlson and Graham Adloff. And then, well, hey, your fourstar gem of the class so far, Omihei Azula. Now, outside of that, what's the biggest name coming to campus here?
Obviously, we want all these kids to commit, but there is one player that I have my eye on. Really hope they can lock him up, but I'm curious to hear your name first. Who's the biggest name coming to East Lancing soon?
>> Matt, you know me. When we come when we do this, usually it's the trenches and uh offensive tackle Cory Laga is the guy.
>> Yeah, that's my guy.
>> Y Michigan State's definitely prioritizing for that final offensive tackle spot. um him and Caleb Johnson we mentioned earlier and and I don't think they'll be upset about if either one if they were to get either one. They're both high priority guys Michigan State likes a lot and Lagas fresh off in a visit from Oklahoma. So they'll be they'll be an interesting uh foe there and then they'll head to Vanderbilt next and then make a final decision. So it seems to be that that's the final three there. Um Michigan State finds themselves in the mix. He came to a junior day back in uh January when the coaching staff had first got here and then he came back for a spring practice in April as well. So this will be his third trip to campus and and he's starting to grow a strong bond with Nick Tobaca and so I think Michigan State's definitely got a shot.
I I bet I think Oklahoma set a high bar on the first weekend but Michigan State will get their at bat this weekend. And another guy to keep an eye on that I like is the defensive end Lawrence Connor. Michigan State was his first power four offer, but he's a guy that I'm surprised hasn't picked up just more just based off of his measurables and he put up good numbers last year. He'sn't uh a long defensive rush end prospect.
So, both of those two guys um are two guys that I think would be important and and fun additions to the class.
>> You know, I I did want to talk about Lawrence Connor here for a little bit.
You think it's safe to say that he's the top edge guy on their board right now as things stand?
Yeah, it's interesting because Marcelos Young Casario is up there too, but when I was talking to him, he has he dbo explained over the weekend the ver positional versatility that he has and I personally thought he was a rush end, but they were talking about how he could just bind up across the line. So, if you took him out of the equation, I think Kenna would be the number one rush end and Young Casario, I think he could end up projecting out there at at the end of the day. But um between those two guys, those are the two guys that they definitely have their sights set on.
>> I just think it's fascinating too with the defensive line recruiting here. Not to go back to that conversation, but you know, Young Casario is a guy that's versatile. You can move him all across the line. The same could be said about Ronaldo Perez. Now, unfortunately, that won't be Michigan State's player to work with, but also like a guy that you mentioned earlier, Dallas Ward, who I think is a fascinating prospect on the defensive line. You could play him outside, you could play him inside. I I like it in theory, but I also remember too, well, I like Quanderas Dunigan was kind of that position. I worked kind of, but not fully to its potential. Tumisay Adila, if I'm saying his name right, but the former five-star kid, he was kind of that same. But, I don't know. It's just I almost feel like it's kind of a gamble going after these kids that can play inside, can play outside. who knows what their true position is, but it seems like the staff is pretty convinced that they could mold these kids into a position that'll actually work for them.
So, that's just what I find fascinating with so many of these guys are targeting like are just like, "Yeah, we're kind of a defensive tackle. We're kind of a defensive end. We can kind of play rush end." I I don't know. There's not really a question that comes from that. I just find that I just find that fascinating that's that's a route that they're going down right now for this class. Yeah, it does seem to be just pile up the talent and and let it work itself out when they get campus, which it's an interesting strategy, but I can also kind of see it too because you just never know with some of these kids which ways their their body's going to finish growing.
For a lot of young 17, 18 year old kids, you just don't know. There could be another growth spurt left in there for them or just >> Yeah, of course.
>> But yeah, it's interesting for sure. So amongst the guys and I'll ask the same question that I asked Justin last week like who's the diamond in the rough for this upcoming uh list of visitors and it will be a name I just mentioned it is Dallas Ward because he does offer that versatility 6'3 250 lbs I imagine eventually he'll just fully slide inside after you know he adds some weight but who's to say I'm not coach Debo I'm not the one that's going to be making this decision I'm sure that they have their own vision for him but I just I I just cannot help it to get suckered into guys that play high school football in the state of Georgia. They know how to do things right down there. Now, he's also got interest from some other Big 10 schools or like Ruckers, Minnesota, Cincinnati has thrown an offer his way.
So, not like the most shining offer sheet, but it's certainly, you know, not one that's only MAC offers. I think Dallas Ward is that guy for this week and that'll be that diamond in the rough. Is there another route that you want to go for a guy that might not have the highest recruit ranking that you want to keep an extra eye on?
Yeah. Uh, we mentioned Cana and but I'll go with another one here and Brian Panky, the tight end. Um, Michigan State and Brian Waznjak, they really have liked him for a long time. They've he's been on the radar since the winter and uh, Waznjak went out to Colorado to watch him work out at his school twice this spring and after one of the workouts, he extended an offer and they quickly scheduled an official visit. I think at the end of the day, the number one priority at tight end has always been Anthony Cartright, but um the way things have been trending, Michigan State's prepared to to make a run at Ryan Pinky this weekend. And I think at at the end of the day, if Cartwright wanted to come to Michigan State, they'd probably make room for two. But Panki is a safe backup plan or not even backup plan, just another option there for Michigan State. Heck really likes Panky.
um he plays baseball in Colorado, so it kind of helped keep him under the radar throughout the spring where he wasn't able to go do camps and and get it out there on the football circuit. So, he played baseball throughout the spring and he'll be on campus this weekend and I think there's a good chance Michigan State would be able to close him down if that's what they choose to do over the weekend.
>> Last question, and it's a hard-hitting one. How are How are you doing? Because this time of year for recruiting reporters has to be banana land. lucky enough to even get you for 25 minutes, but every everything good. Are you sleeping okay? What What is life like?
Is your phone just nuclear at this point? How's life? Are are we okay, Jason?
>> We're doing good. We're having fun. One of my favorite times of year. And it's really fun to just get in the mix with everything. And the only bad thing is is I'm sure as soon as I hop in the shower or go cut the lawn or something like that, that's when the commitments will come. So, >> yes, that's right. Never a doubt.
Whenever you got to hop in the car for a half hour car ride, inevitably that's when Pat Fitzgerald will tweet out.
>> Exactly.
>> The old Pat signal. So yeah, we know how it goes around here. But guys, that is Jason Kilb. If you want more of his work and well, the whole team really at Spartan Mag does outstanding work. Go to Spartan Mag, subscribe to them, subscribe to his work. And guys, we will be back by the end of the weekend.
