Temperatures soar as heatwave tightens grip across parts of India

[00:00:00]The great Indian summer is set to become harsher.

[00:00:03]With the India Meteorological Department warning that heat wave conditions are likely to persist across large parts of the country over the next week.

[00:00:12]According to the IMD, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Rajasthan are likely to remain under heat wave conditions till May 28th.

[00:00:24]Severe heat wave conditions are also expected in several pockets during this period.

[00:00:29]Several parts of the country are already witnessing blistering temperatures.

[00:00:34]Temperatures have already crossed 44°C in several states and hospitals are reporting a rise in heat related illnesses and some states reporting deaths linked to the extreme weather.

[00:00:48]Authorities across states are scrambling to put emergency measures in place to prevent more heat related deaths and illnesses.

[00:00:56]In Telangana, Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy said 16 people had died due to heat wave conditions across seven districts during the current summer season.

[00:01:08]He directed officials to identify villages recording extremely high temperatures and ensured drinking water, buttermilk and ORS packets were made available at public places and work sites.

[00:01:22]In Rajasthan, Chittorgarh recorded 44.2°C making it the hottest place in the state.

[00:01:30]The weather department has warned that temperatures could rise by another 2 to 3° in the coming days.

[00:01:36]Delhi also continued to reel under intense heat with temperatures crossing 45°C in several areas despite brief thunderstorms earlier this week.

[00:01:48]Hospitals across Delhi NCR reported a rise in dehydration, headaches, heat exhaustion and other heat related symptoms.

[00:01:57]Veterinarians and animal rescuers also reported birds collapsing from the heat and stray animals suffering from dehydration and heat-related illnesses.

[00:02:08]In Punjab and Haryana, Rohtak recorded 44.1° C while Bhatinda registered 43.8° C.

[00:02:18]Chandigarh recorded a maximum temperature of 40.6° C.

[00:02:23]Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh directed government hospitals to operationalize dedicated heatstroke management units equipped with cooling measures, cold IV fluids, and emergency medical supplies.

[00:02:36]In Himachal Pradesh, the Shimla Meteorological Centre issued a yellow warning for heatwave conditions in districts including Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Solan, and Sirmaur on May 26th and 27th. In Jharkhand, the IMD issued a heatwave alert for Garhwa, Palamu, and Chatra districts for May 25th while also forecasting thunderstorms and rainfall in several parts of the state over the coming days.
