Endurance Is Not the Same as Resilience追加:
Endurance is not resilience, but somewhere along the way we started using those words as if they mean the same thing.
They do not.
Endurance is your ability to keep going under pressure, to push through, to stay functional when the load is heavy and the conditions are hard.
Resilience is what happens afterwards.
It's your capacity to recover, return to baseline, and to restore the systems that were stretched. It requires rest and safety, and it requires the threat to actually end.
From a neuroscience perspective, your HPA axis, your stress response system, is designed to activate under threat and deactivate when the threat passes.
That deactivation is not optional. It is how your brain recalibrates. It is how resilience is built.
But we've turned resilience into a workplace buzzword, and in doing so, we have stripped it of its meaning.
When they say be more resilient, what they often mean is keep performing while we keep pushing, and adapt to our chaos, and absorb more without breaking.
And this is not resilience. This is endurance. And endurance without recovery does not build you up, it wears you down.
You cannot bounce back from something that never stops hitting you. That is not how your nervous system works, and that is not how any nervous system works.
True resilience requires spaciousness, time to process, permission to not be productive for a moment.
That condition that let your body know the danger has passed.
When you feel exhausted, disconnected, or numb, that is not a lack of resilience. That is your nervous system telling you it has been in survival mode for too long.
Your body's not weak, it's giving you data.
