Over 60 Piggy Banks Found on Texas Beach

[00:00:00]Several unusual colorful piggy banks have popped up on the beaches in Texas.

[00:00:05]Jace Tunnel says they first appeared last year and now they're quickly multiplying. Found over 60.

[00:00:11]And uh just last week I found 14 in one small stretch of beach, you know.

[00:00:17]>> [laughter] >> So, the mystery's just getting bigger, you know.

[00:00:20]We thought, "Wow, this is kind of interesting." So, we started picking them up and trying to investigate where they were coming from because it's odd.

[00:00:27]This is most common and they may actually manufacture these in the Dominican Republic.

[00:00:32]Some of these look brand new. This one's cut. That's the only way to get the money out is to cut it. Although, we do find ones that are brand new. The marine biologist has theories about where they've come from. One of the theories is that a container ship busted open and these things are just floating around in the ocean. These others that have cuts all the way in them, we think that people are just using [music] them, then disposing of them and they get into the ocean currents and then wash up on the beaches. Some of the ones we find actually have Spanish writing on them.

[00:01:03]They could be coming from Central and South America. You know, a lot of people don't have the same infrastructure we do in the United States where you know, we're getting our trash picked up on our curb once a week. They might [music] put it at the end of their street for a month or two until it's picked up. And if it rains during that time, it gets into the rivers, then into the ocean and then gets up into the currents and then washes up on our shorelines. [music] He says the plastic pigs have also popped up in other regions. They're finding them in the Bahamas, they're finding them in Florida, they're finding them all over the place. And so, it really shows how, you know, once something gets into the ocean currents, it really is just distributed all over the world. Unfortunately, no treasures have been found inside of them. I keep expecting to open them up and uh find some kind of foreign money in there or or dollar bills, you know, that would be incredible. But, as of yet, no, they're all empty. The only thing I seem to find inside of them are sand dollars. Over the years, Jay has found many [music] strange items in the water. Creepy dolls is one of the ones that, uh, you know, probably 20 to 30 dolls a year we find, and they have barnacles coming out of their eye and all that. Um, I've I found over 60 messages in a bottle.

[00:02:17]And so, some of those have incredible stories. Some of them have money in them because it's supposed to be old-school communication. Uh, I have found safes. I found prosthetic legs. I found bowling balls.

[00:02:29]Uh, pretty much anything you can think of I found on the beach. And now he has to get creative about where he keeps his unusual finds. Cuz my wife doesn't let me bring anything else home anymore, but I do have a couple secret spots around outside of the house I put the stuff in.

[00:02:43]So, there's one thing I definitely can't bring in the house, and those are the witch bottles. What a lot of them look like, they have, um, things from around their house inside of there. They'll do a spell of either good luck or bad luck or for a loved one. I mean, all kinds of reasons. Then they'll they'll put the cap back on and throw it in the ocean.

[00:03:00]And so, I have found quite a few of these, and never ever do I open them.
