Las Vegas apartment complex opens nearly 3 years after massive $100M construction fire

[00:00:00]First at 10, remember this? It was one of the biggest fires in Vegas Valley in recent memory. Hundreds of apartments under construction burned for 5 days, the fire shutting down lanes of the nearby 215 at Durango, throwing embers and starting spot fires in nearby neighborhoods. One construction worker was hurt and the cause of the fire was never determined.

[00:00:21]>> That was back in June of 2023 and now almost 3 years later, the buildings are not only standing once again, people are now moving in calling the Arca apartments home. It's a story that you will only see on Fox 5.

[00:00:37]>> A raging inferno causing an estimated $100 million worth of damage taking down several buildings.

[00:00:44]>> Looks like it's fire is collapsing right now.

[00:00:46]>> What was once known as the Cactus Life Apartment Complex has been reborn from the ashes as Arca.

[00:00:53]>> Every single two-bedroom is on a corner like you see here. We're comprised of four residential buildings, a clubhouse building, 356 total units.

[00:01:01]>> Firefighters battled and saved the original clubhouse from the flames.

[00:01:06]>> It was a windy day, so you had embers flying for quite a distance starting new fires.

[00:01:11]>> Sylvia Lands is with a firefighters conference on the strip that day. He says large construction fires like these are extremely dangerous.

[00:01:19]>> They're essentially matchsticks stacked on top of each other with no fire protection systems at all.

[00:01:23]>> He now works with the company M Fire Suppression making sure it does not happen again. As crews added the wood framing building out the new apartments, a team came in behind them to spray the wrong lumber with anti-fire spray. Now all the wood has been treated and Lands is says it will not burn again.

[00:01:44]>> A lot of us here in Vegas know that the Southwest here on the curve is a super popular area.

[00:01:49]>> Kevin Marquis, regional property manager for Arca, says people have been waiting for years to to in and this new community is providing much-needed housing.

[00:01:59]>> We've been slammed. We're super busy. We have anywhere from 30 to 50 new people coming in per week to look for a new home.

[00:02:07]>> And the Arco apartments are now fully open. The first residents moved in at the end of last month, and they are open for tours and move-ins 7 days a week.
