Witnessing this first encounter, documented as the Schmidt Ocean Institute's remotely vehicle Sebastian descended through the water >> a volcanic archipelago in the South Atlantic, approximately 1500 km east-southeast of South Georgia. Some of the most remote ocean territory on Earth. Few research vessels operate this far [music] south, and fewer still carry deep-water ROVs capable of sustained [music] work at the depths where the colossal squid lives. The team came from the Schmidt Ocean Institute, a privately funded oceanographic organization founded in 2009 by Wendy and Eric Schmidt, operating research vessels in regions that receive almost no systematic scientific attention.
