Shoplifting and retail theft result in serious legal consequences, including arrest, criminal charges (misdemeanor or felony depending on value and prior record), and potential jail time; individuals with prior theft convictions face enhanced charges, and attempting to evade detection through tactics like tag switching or lying to police only worsens the legal outcome.

Here's the thing.
There's a guy in here looks just like you wearing the same exact hoodie. Okay.
But you're saying you were never in this store.
I don't know.
Are you sure you were never in this store?
No. You didn't buy nothing recently out of Best Buy?
No.
Okay. Did you drive here?
Uh yes, I did drive here. Okay. Is it possible someone else drove your vehicle here?
Uh no, not my vehicle. My My vehicle is brand new, 2023. No one drives my car but me.
The pressure is now on and the officers make it clear that this is his last chance to come clean.
Give me a minute.
I got a lot of adrenaline. I'll pull up the video footage. If it's you, dude, it's you may as well just come clean about it.
If not, then maybe it's just somebody with the same exact hoodie as you. Well, it's possible. I mean, these you know, it is what it is. The only reason I didn't wear this >> a twin brother or anything? No. The only reason I wear this is because of this right here.
I got ouch. Yes, I got a staff. Okay.
So, that's the only reason I'm wearing this hot thing today because it's embarrassing coming up in the store like this. Got you. Okay.
Stand here with this officer.
What is they saying they took?
Computer.
Not today. They It was This This happened days ago.
Computer?
I think you're kind of big.

This is This is what >> No, they're not saying you stole that one. No, there's no argument about that particular one.
Some other laptop.
Sounds like maybe on Sunday or something this happened.
Sunday? I work Sundays. So, yeah.
While the cameras are being checked, the officer starts digging into the suspect's story by asking why he came to Best Buy in the first place.
So, you just Were you trying to just get a plug then to Well, I had I had Geek Squad. I was having them try to figure out what was matter with it to see if it's something fixable or But, you know what I'm saying?
They got no They got fix for it?
No, they said.
Unless I mean, >> [cough] >> the amount for the fix, I'd be better off to upgrade. I'd just get a because it's a it's a big purchase.
You know, it's a cuz they have to tear it down. They have to break it down and then put it back. What did you pay for the tablet in general?
40 bucks, 50 bucks.
You know.
So, I thought it was a deal.
You know.
After checking the surveillance footage, the other officer returns and this is when things get a lot more serious. All righty.
You ready? Yeah.
Ready to be honest?
Yeah, sure. What you got?
Got that your Nissan in the parking lot.
We got you in the store.
Same shoes, same hoodie.
Okay.
So, you were in the store. Okay. Yes, I did.
>> I can't believe anything you tell me.

>> I got short-term memory. Short-term memory? Yes. Okay. You're under arrest.
Put your hands behind your back. Relax the hand. I know you got bad hands.
Now, go behind your back.
Could have been honest. Might have got you off with just a citation or something.
>> Hold on. Don't talk. Don't talk. Don't talk. What can I do?
Do you have the item?
>> Where's the laptop? It's at night.

Okay.
I guess you'll have to get it after you get released.
No.
You already pawned it? Yep.
Why do that if you work work work work work?
And you make money.
We'll have a chance to talk to you down at the jail.
Is this bondable?
I don't know, man. We're going to have to look. That's how it's expensive, and it depends on your history.
The officers now start reviewing the suspect's history, [music] and what they learn about him doesn't do him any favors.
Any prior convictions of larceny or retail theft?
A long time ago.
Over 30 years.
So, why are you still doing this 30 years later?
Relax your hands.
Sometimes your word is your bond. Just be honest, okay?
I can't say that while I'm wired, right?
We gave you a chance. You gave me a chance, but you can give me other chances. No. No, your chances have ran out, man. There's no such thing as ran out chance.
I mean, with us there is.
So, you guys are 50 year old, and you're smart enough to know that you took something that wasn't yours, right? And then the first thing you said was I have short-term memory loss.
Right.
>> Right?
>> And so But, now you remember all this.
No, but listen, what I was trying to do was stay out of trouble.
You know what I'm saying? But, if you were trying to stay out of trouble, you wouldn't take something. And if you're trying to stay out of trouble, you certainly wouldn't come back to the same place.
Right, what?
I mean These are two different lifestyles.
All right, I'll tell you, man.
Right?
I just know Which is your bad arm, man?
All right. Bad arm is left side. All right, right side. All right, watch it.
All right, got it.
Okay.
I'm going to put this one right With the suspect still offering ridiculous reasons, the officers finally decide that talking is now over.
Uh yeah, I'm going to check his history. Okay.
Do you want to talk to them and see if they want a see one P ticket or Yep, I'm sure they want the laptop. That's probably what they want. I can do that.
We'll work with them, but you got to give that laptop Oh, I'll give it back.

>> kind of goes out the window. How much Do you have money on this chime card? Uh no. Not Not until the first.
What's the name of the pawn shop? Night Night. Over by the casino.
All right, man. Spread your legs for me nice and wide.
I'm going to ask them if they can get the laptop back, do they still want to pursue you know, such charges? You're at least getting the contact. If you can get that laptop back, I'm sure they'll be very happy.
With a stolen laptop valued at over one thousand dollars and prior theft offenses on his record, the suspect was ultimately charged with felony retail theft.

You had socks. You also had liquor.
By the end of the encounter, the suspect was taken into custody and charged with retail theft.
This shoplifting duo pushed their luck too far. [music] On January 17th, 2025, police were called to a local Walmart after employees reported that two customers were suspected of shoplifting through the self-checkout lane. What they said when the police arrived only made things worse for the suspects. [music] Okay. Okay. We're going to walk back to the asset protection office, okay?
>> Okay. So, right now you're being under arrest for retail theft for example.
>> I paid for everything. No, you didn't.
We're going to follow them, okay?
>> I I had to pay for my stuff. Are you kidding me? Hey, don't play games. I'm not. Okay. So, we're going to follow them to the asset protection office, okay? Okay.
Okay. Um can I at least get this paid for so we can take my truck? We can worry about that here in a minute, okay? Okay. So, hold it then or how does this work? Did you pay for that yet?
>> I'm trying I'm getting it. My card's locked. I can't get it unlocked so my friend's sitting here. Leave it. We'll We'll take care of this.
>> All right, perfect.
I'll see you in a minute, I guess or Yeah.
Yep. Why is he coming, too? Hey, don't worry about it. Don't be mad, okay? Oh, I'm more than mad cuz I have receipts for everything. That's perfectly fine.
I don't see it.
All right.
Okay.
Yep.
Okay. We need both your IDs.
I don't mind this card, but yeah, I got one on here. It's okay. You got your receipt for the transaction?
Which one? I did a couple. I have several receipts. We also need the receipts you got off the register you walked away from.
>> I just got to grab that for Fetch cuz I use Fetch points.
One second.
The suspect insists [music] she did nothing wrong, but that claim quickly falls apart once loss prevention begins going through their belongings.
That's not mine.
Ma'am, did you bring your ID up here?
No. Did you go up here? Yep. Okay. Wait, there's stuff in there that's ours.
Okay. And where?
Our stuff. What is in my purse? That's perfume. That's mine. That That's my body So, please look again. Yeah, there are people we don't steal. It's from Bath & Body Works. You don't even You have the receipt for this stuff.
>> Yes.
I mean god damn, I've never been caught for stealing this thing in my life.
>> Oh, this is what the one I took off with the theft points. The records I pulled out were extra. That was this one, okay?
There you go. And I got These are these.
Okay. These This doesn't belong here.
This is this. We were just paying for the dog food. The whole situation is just And also and then there was other stuff.
The suspect keeps firing off excuses in her [music] defense, but all of that falls apart the moment the store staff reveals a crucial piece of evidence.
This is what was tag switched.
Very obviously. Yeah.
I'll I'll admit that. So, that's called that's stealing. So, you can say I You can say I stole all you want, but I didn't. One, I wasn't going to say that I didn't do that. But he had no part of it. You didn't even know what was going on. He was with you the entire time. No, he wasn't. That last half you can watch. He walked back to You can even walk back to auto mart.
Ma'am, what's your first name? Abby McCollum. Abby, please stand up and come over here, please.
Can I put your hands behind your back?
You're under arrest for retail theft.
Okay.
But really he had nothing. She had no idea what she was doing in there. I promise.
Not that my promise means anything, but it doesn't.
This way it doesn't tighten up on you.
Yep.
Anything else in your purse that's going to hurt me or poke or stick me? I believe don't think so.
Oh, that one I honestly truly did forget. Sorry.
I got this all right.
I believe You got a wagon out of Walmart. Okay, I'm sorry. I apologize.
I really didn't I scanned my brush.
I scanned those. Is that your Dodge truck out there, sir? Yeah, it's mine.
>> Okay. I I just I'm making sure. I just bought it.
>> Yes, we just got it literally a day ago.
I actually know We got it today. Last night.
No, I can't even get to the place. Even with the suspects already caught in the act, the officers give them one last chance to [music] speak for themselves.
Why were you tax switching today?
And not paying for anything. I Honestly, some of this stuff I really did forget. I really didn't mean to take. I will be 100%. The tax switch that I honestly did do. Okay. And I'm sorry for it, but Do we have the money to pay for everything? Yeah, I can take care of it. I was trying to pay for it whenever you told me you're worried about later. We want to pay for the stuff that you got.
>> stuff, but the others I do. I can pay for it.
>> So >> Did you pay You need to pay for it? I'll pay for it right now. I was just I'm just curious. Um do we have you have cash or credit cards to pay for >> card. Credit card >> Nate has my cards. Okay.
Um so why tax switch? Is it a fix? Is it It was Honestly, it was I wanted to get a couple of things I needed I shouldn't have.
I was wrong anyway. I shouldn't What were you tax switching?
Just some little stuff that I shouldn't have even.
It was stupid to do.
110% wasn't worth this at all.
Okay.
Before you try to say what I was stealing a felony and you please double check back there with what I think was scanned.
I'm going to go eat my food. Should I send anything out there? Thank you. No, I'm just saying if you're going to charge me with a felony like it was that there was stuff being scanned back there cuz that was $156. I had a hundred of it paid already.
And then the stuff got stopped. The perfume and stuff in there is my Bath and Body Works.
That was truly not I'm I meant to pay for that one.
But that was truly I mean I didn't mean to I meant to pay for it.
Truly.
Um I tax switched so I paid for some of it, right? They're only going to charge you for the things you did not pay for and the things you tax switched.
>> Okay, thank you. That's really good to know. Yes, ma'am. Appreciate it.
Officers now ask the suspect one simple question and the answer could decide how this case ends. Have you ever been convicted of retail theft before?
>> Um I was putting those back and I bought a second of those receivers.
>> Okay, Abby, have you ever been convicted of retail theft before?
>> No. No, wait. My job tried to to say that I took 20 out of Actually, no, cuz they charged me for my own money. So, yeah, and I was put in Williamson with my own money.
>> Not arrested, but like you went to court and they said yes, you're guilty of retail theft.
No.
It was dropped.
Will you do a CTA for me, please?
>> so. It'd be Williamson. No, um it'd be Fort Myers.
>> Abby.
If there's any convictions for retail theft, please. It'd be a Myers.
Just shoot me a text message.
All right, I'm going to let you know that I'm signing this for you because you're being trespassed or formally trespassed from all Walmart property. That includes Sam's Club, that includes Murphy's Oil, that includes all Walmarts in the world. So, you can't go to Carbon Nail and start shopping.
>> Okay. If you get caught stealing in Carbon Nail, you'll be charged with corporate. Okay. So, you are definitely charged Okay.
That's fine.
Can somebody talk to me like really about business like just about it real quick?
Cuz I paid for a hundred of that stuff and I'm trying to see what's qualified and how that works then.
What's that mean?
That I paid for a hundred of the stuff back Okay, so it was a hundred and then 53 back in the automotive counter of the stuff I was trying to pay for.
Which would be like oil change, would be the dog food, would be the candles, would be you know what I mean? That stuff. And there was a Sally's clock and something else.
>> is it a misdemeanor? And Okay. All right.
Um any other stuff that you paid for we're just giving back to Nathan that way he can have it. That way he can put it in the trunk, okay? Okay, perfect. But the $100 was taken off at the register and I owe $53 still on that balance and that's when he told me I was free to go. I'll pay for it. Don't worry about it. Here are the things. Before the suspect is taken away, officers allow her to tie up a few loose ends.
No, he didn't ask me to not do that and I don't want him to not >> But you just said that he did.
He said take care of the over there.
I didn't hear Nathan talk. I'm sorry.
Oh, the stuff on the counter? I said they'd take care of it later. Yeah, that's what I was trying to take care of cuz you took $100 off my card already and I'm trying to pay the remaining amount.
>> Okay. If I need to send Nathan in to pay it, I just need to know that and I'll >> Well, we're going to go talk to Nathan so I'm going to have him come back and get all your property, okay? All right, so we're going to go ahead and hop up and we're going to just get out along our way. We're going to get out of here.
>> candles, dog food. Candles, dog food, there was a There was another bag of >> stuff is over there. Okay, yeah, that too. So, we need to put it back in the cart and then yeah.
And honestly, if you just the dog food, candles and dog food then it should be paid for cuz that's that's the $100.
>> get that taken care of, okay? We got to walk that way.
Yeah, well I got to I parked over there so we're going to walk a long long way.
Can I put my handcuffs Can I do what?
Can I just be handcuffed in the car but I don't I I can't. I got to keep them on.
>> Okay, can I at least leave them down over it? For your safety? Yeah. Yeah, thank you.
Cuz I need >> bring the cart over there.
Or I was going to have Nathan come over here that way you don't have to push all of it.
You don't need to come here anymore then.
So, whatever you want. 60 We'll just move. Okay, cool.
Thank you.
All right, on this way, please.
Can I talk to Nate?
I don't know where he is.
Excuse me, can you my hair out of my eye? It's right there in this eye. It's Just let me wipe my forehead.
Are you allowed to touch me? I have no disease.
Thank you.
Look at them on this side.
You have my phone with everything in it.
Can you call him by chance and have him bring me my phone?
He's going to be able to get you out tonight, but >> No, I know, but I'll be okay. Okay.
After her attempts to talk her way out of trouble went nowhere, the suspect was charged with retail theft. She was also banned from Walmart and all affiliated stores.
Walmart tag switcher caught red-handed.
On February 20th, 2026, [music] officers responded to a local Walmart after receiving a report that a customer allegedly switched tags on several high-value items. Watch how officers handled the case.
Good afternoon.
We haven't gotten everything just yet.
Oh. But, if you look like just on those boots alone, those boots are $56, but it's got a tag on it for And I'm just going by what the tag was on it.
$3.66 was shoes. How much?
>> be two of them.
I don't know if there's one. Have you been arrested for any kind of retail theft or anything in the past? Okay.
And we're going with going with what was on it.
I had a girl at the register help.
Monroe Florida. Theft and forgery.
That was 10 years ago. That Okay, these these are these are for life, though.
So, once you That was 10 years ago.
Yeah, but once you have one that for for the rest of your life, if you get one that makes it automatically a felony. If you take a stick of gum, it becomes a felony. Oh, yeah. I had seen the things that I had bought. She was on one.
Purchased what I thought the times were.
Yeah. So, do I get reimbursed for whatever the times were? I don't know how they do that. I'm sure they'll figure out what's actually yours and what's not, but That's That's actually probably the least of your problems right now.
Yeah, I mean, I'm okay with it.
I'm just the one with what was on Yeah, just double-checking to make sure that it was on. merchandise.
That's it.
Is she in your guys' system at all? I didn't see her. Okay. Nope.
Oh, she's she's in ours.
She's not in ours. She's not in ours.
Uh, she's here at 4:38. Now that the suspect is detained, store staff are left trying to sort through everything she supposedly paid for. And you got the French slice bread?
Yes.
Did you Do you have it on there?
I don't. The French bread is it's on there. I zapped The French slice 162, yep, got Yeah, it was on there.
I zapped everything in my bag.
Everything else You need a training So, I can keep what I purchased, but I don't get anything back from what I did. I'm going to go get a training receipt.
That would be amazing if you were to get me a training receipt. That way there's no guesswork to this.
Okay, here. I'll hold that.
You have a local address or you still in Florida?
Um, I go back and forth. Okay. Um yeah.
I'm just retired.
Well, I've been going back and forth.
The jacket, the boy's jacket, I think.
Yeah, these right here are She's got everything that wasn't Was that put in a bag? I don't think it was. I I didn't put it in a bag because they were so bulky.
I don't I don't want a bag. But, yeah, it's fine.
Thank you.
Well, I don't We're waiting for her to come back with the training receipt so that he knows how much the amount was that wasn't paid for.
>> Okay, so do I get a difference for what was scanned? I mean, we'll tell you whenever. Yeah, we'll tell you What y'all owe me for what was scanned.
Because everything was scanned. So, there was a price paid. Despite facing possible jail time, the suspect seems more focused on other concerns as she speaks with store staff. So, how many items had these tickets these stickers on them?
>> Just quite a few of them. Like I don't know what the prices were for each one, but Normally, we wouldn't differentiate the difference. That's okay.
We would just I mean, cuz you I'm just going with what was on the items. So, I don't know how much Usually, whenever tags are wrapped around things like that, we don't think that the checkout was honest. I guess we're supposed to be We get a lot of people taking tags and sticking them to things I understand that.
So It's a little bit more complex. I mean, if I get the difference, I don't know what the difference adds up to.
But, if not, it's okay, too.
>> what he wants to do. The guy that you said is the boss.
>> It doesn't I'm okay with it either way. Normally, we don't make up the difference. Normally not.
>> No. Okay, and that's okay.
I know they're I don't know what it adds up to, but Okay. You got a ballpark figure?
No. No, sir.
I'm sorry, but no.
>> I mean, it yeah.
I ring everything up. I don't Like as far as the tags, the store is crazy with clearance.
>> Like I said, usually when the tags, like I said, are wrapped around like that or like not supposed to be there, we usually think that's what's going on.
All right.
>> I mean, I can see where you would assume that, but >> a lot of it. We get a lot of it.
>> Do you really?
>> Yeah. A lot. Oh, yes. Yes.
>> [snorts] >> It's ticket switching and it's financed, so.
Yeah, tag swap, ticket switching, under-ringing, there's all different kinds of little things that we >> Well, I'll be going through a regular live person.
It's the best thing to do.
Even though I had a little help with the liquor and, you know, putting everything down there.
Yeah, I go back and forth from the keys up here.
The store [music] staff now returned with the official receipt, which spells a lot of trouble for the suspect. All right. So, $198 is what it totaled up to be off of it. That's what the the theft and also the stuff that wasn't and then this is what she actually scanned and paid for. It was >> $31 so the difference was >> $160. Yeah, it would be still $160.
>> Okay. All right.
Will I get a different card or do It's $31 is actually $31 is is is all that you paid for, but it was 200 after taxes is 215, but we don't do taxes usually on that, so it was $198 of merchandise that was either stolen or ticket switched, so so it was a different price tag. Wow.
Wow.
Well, I'll be going through a live person from now on. I'm not doing self checkout anymore. That's crazy. Even though I had a little bit of help, you know, with her with the big items. Yeah.
You have somebody that's going to come and get your stuff? What? Me? Yeah.
Come get my Come get this stuff? Yeah, get to come and get your stuff.
I'm I'm outside. I'm parked outside.
>> but you're going to go with me cuz you're going to be placed under arrest for it's it's a felony. I explained it to you a minute ago.
>> Oh my god, no, please. Yeah. I mean, they don't they don't have any Well, you weigh on it. I mean, that's the policy. Yeah. No, I didn't. Yeah.
Yeah, I mean, that's that's a No, please. That's quite a bit.
>> Yeah. What? Yeah. The the Okay, so the dollar the dollar amount Yeah, but that we're way past that. The dollar amount part of it isn't the issue because if it was $300, it would be a felony in of itself, but if you if you were to go in here and pick up a package of gum and walk out with it, that's a felony.
>> to pay whatever all the amount is. We're we're way past that. I mean, that's The suspect now attempts to defend herself, but officers quickly bring her back to the reality of the situation. We be past that. Right, we're past that.
Like I was only ringing up what was already there.
>> Okay, if you had one item if you had one item that maybe had a funky tag on you, scan it.
>> Oh my god.
>> I will not I will not do >> Also, you know, there was a list there.
We got like Yeah, there's at least 12 items that were actually and then by the half of those were actually probably what four or five of them were actually just flat out stolen. Okay. It was just not even scanned. Me stolen?
Bypassing bypassing scanner. Yes, ma'am.
I had so much stuff in my buggy.
I can pay for everything and not keep it. Is Is it Once you walked out that door, it's now a crime and we we've got to follow our policies cuz if I don't follow the policies on you, then I can't then I can't follow it on anybody else. So, it's an unfortunate about it, but I So, it was not my intention. I swear.
It wasn't.
Just trespass me, please. Just trespass me.
>> Well, we're we're actually not trespassing you because this is the only time that we've got you in our system.
>> I know I haven't done anything. But, you know, as far as this which it's it's too late for that. It's Yeah, it's already too late. You've already walked out the door and you've already committed the crime.
The officer continues delivering more bad news to the suspect, and that leaves her absolutely devastated.
>> No way you can No. No. Oh my god, really? What is going to happen?
I mean What's I'm sorry, what was I don't know what's going to happen. Okay, so we will take you up to the sheriff's department. They will process you in.
Uh you will have a uh detention hearing on Monday, at which time they'll probably release you on your own recognizance.
>> On Monday? Uh-huh. I'm spending the weekend in jail? Yes. Yes. Yeah, there's uh court was today at 1:00. So, you've already missed court for the day.
>> let me out on my own? They will Monday.
Oh. I'm I'm almost sure of it cuz you only have one prior conviction.
What?
Oh my god.
You don't think they're going to let me out? I can't >> They will Monday. They'll let you out on Monday. Is there a bond? No, there is there is Illinois doesn't have any bond anymore. It's a Yeah, it's a bail-free state.
>> out on my own?
No, they won't. Monday they will, generally speaking. I will pay for anything that needs to be done.
>> I We're I mean we're past that. Um Oh my god, please.
Oh my god, no. Please, let me Can I just I will pay for all of it. Okay, I just That's like buying insurance after you have a wreck. It doesn't I mean it doesn't count. You You've already We've already gotten to this point with it. If it was one item, I'd be like, "Okay, it's an oops." But, you got 12 items.
It's It seems to be blatant. So, >> No, it Well, it was not.
>> Okay. I'm not I'm not the court. I'm just like I I can't take a report.
>> me. I'll pay all of the difference. We we we That's not the way our policies work and I can't do that. Please. 11 from 12.
Yes, I have my boyfriend out there and I can't get out till Monday.
No, they they don't have any hearings till Monday.
>> get out on my own like >> No, they they will That's what they do on Monday. Oh my god.
Oh my god. 11 from 12.
>> Please.
2011. Oh my god.
>> You're 11 for transport. Oh god, please help.
>> [sighs] >> The suspect still insists on arguing, but officers make it clear that every action comes with consequences. I will never come back into this store. I'll pay it the amount.
>> This this doesn't work like that. I'm sorry. It's not set up to work that way.
This is not.
>> Oh. Oh my god.
>> [gasps] >> There's nothing I can do. I'll pay I'll pay anything. It's it's it's already past It's it's it's I have my boyfriend.
He's out in the car. Yeah, give him a call and he can come and he can come and grab your >> to go to the bathroom, too. You can walk in there with me.
>> Well, I can't walk in there with you.
Maybe maybe I'll go. She can walk in there with you. I'll just Oh my god.
Oh, you need to leave that here.
>> Okay.
Yeah, she'll go in the bathroom with you. Oh, we're just going to go right to the front bathroom.
>> I'll just stand outside.
My girlfriend's in here. Yeah, she's in the bathroom. She'll be out in just a second. All right, lady from Florida?
Yeah. Okay, yeah.
They're going to arrest her, are they?
Yeah.
She was going to change the tags?
You know, if it was if it was one tag, I'd be like, yeah, probably not. It was an oops. But there's 12 of them. That's That's a little bit more. Is she going to jail? Yeah, yeah.
>> won't get out till Monday?
>> Correct, yeah.
Um it's because of her previous history.
She had a a a previous theft charge, so that's what made it a felony.
Oh, my.
Yeah, so she's got a cart full of stuff that's paid for and her purse and everything. So, uh Where is it at? It's it's in the uh AP office. We'll get it out here for you here in just a second.
We're we're we're flying her out and then let you have the cart.
And holy [ __ ] It's 22 hours from now.
No, okay. Well, that's wasted.
The suspect is reunited with her boyfriend, but moments later she makes a shocking remark.
Yeah, we're going to turn it over to him.
You're turning me over to him? No, we're going to turn your your cart and your your purse and your >> What?
I need to change in the time of day.
Shawna, her Shawna.
I'm on the phone with her.
Can you pick up my phone?
All right, we need to move along. I got you right out here waiting for you.

Oh my god.
And nobody can like vouch for me? Well, they can Monday. I mean, if they if they attempt to detain you, but I don't think they're going to I have medicine that I have to take.
Oh my god, really? I have medicine that I have to take every day.
>> Okay, well, he can bring it up there if you like. Here, come on this side.
I can't see without my reading glasses.
Okay, well, he can he can bring those to you. So. I don't have my phone. Okay, he can bring all his stuff to you.
I don't live in Harrisburg.
>> Okay. I live in Carmi. Uh-huh. I live in Carmi.
You want to handcuff I lost my purse today in Carmi.
I don't.
There's judges in Carmi. Yeah, but we're not in Carmi. The Carmi is in White County. That's a different judicial circuit.
All right. I'll have a PC down shortly.
One count retail theft under with an enhanced sentence.
Yep. All righty. Thank you, sir.
The officer's investigation revealed that the suspect had prior theft offenses, turning what she may have expected into a far more serious charge.
In the end, she was charged with felony retail theft.
Shoplifting brat learns quickly why you don't lie to police. On November 18th, 2025, officers responded to a local retail store after staff reported that a female customer walked out without paying for an item. Here's what happened when the police arrived.
It's right here.
I had it in >> 48 No, he's been parked over there for a while.
Okay.
Approaching stuff at the counter with nickel and dime stuff. And then left.
This is very like not >> your name?
>> Layla. It's Layla. Yes, this is very like overwhelming to me because I'm just We're doing an investigation, okay?
Okay, but You just need to relax, catch your breath.
>> Okay, I'm sorry because like obviously you need >> anything to you. I don't spend time with like around police and like I don't like I don't like it because it feels I know Okay. Well, I mean you guys haven't personally, but We're just doing our job, okay? And I'm worried about my truck cuz I have to go pick up my oil. I have to have to up my friend before he gets What was the agreement we had?
And like I was trying to Catch your breath, okay? Okay. You're rambling on. I know because I'm >> Just hang out. Hang out. Let us do our thing, okay? I'll see what we can do about getting you out of here, okay? No property of ours. With the suspect now detained and panicking, she manages to calm herself enough to tell her side of the story. Trespasser, too.
She worked What? What do you mean? I don't want to go to trespass. I like I just feel like right up I know, but what I was explaining is I'm so sorry. I'm really sorry.
Okay, so what happened was I was supposed to come in here and the issue was was that I needed to get the court of motor oil or whatever for the truck.
Okay. And I kept saying like in I wrote it I wrote it down and I wrote it down as 5W20.
Okay. Because you know it's always 10W20 or like 5W20, whatever. But um when I was over here, I was like hold on, I need to go see if that is the correct one cuz I don't want to spend all this money and have it not be the right oil. And then when I got to the car and I asked my friend, she's like no, sweetie, it's not 5W20, it's 20W50.
Okay. And I was like 20W50? I've never heard of 20W50 before. Okay. And then I was like wait, what? And then so we sat there and she Googled it for me and then she showed it to me and she's like yeah, it's a it comes in a black thing. It's it'll be the only one that's in there and I was just like oh, what? Okay. And then I looked and I was like okay, what the freak? I didn't know 20W50 like existed and I didn't realize that I had taken the 5W20 out there with me. That was totally accidental. Like I had left everything else here on the counter cuz I'm still I want to check out with all the rest of the stuff, but this me taking this one bottle out there was purely accidental. After hearing the suspect's side of the story, officers move to take the situation to the next step. I'm just trying to make sure that we have other Wait, wait, why am I getting like arrested now?
Okay, why? You can be detained at this time because you are going to be charged with shoplifting and then also trespassing and you're not coming back on private Am I going to jail? Are you lying about your name, Layla? No, I'm not. Am I going to jail? Well, until we figure out who you are Yeah, my name is Layla Real.

I'm really sorry. At this point, we have options in front of us. If you continue to play games, I'm just saying it out loud on camera. You continue to play games, she's going to be the final decision as to what happens. And I bless her with whatever she decides to do, whether it's go to jail, whether that's citation, what whatever it is. It's her choice. Do you understand that? Yes. So, if you give her a hard time in any aspect, I promise you her foot will be making an introduction with you.

Instead [music] of simply cooperating, the suspect's dishonesty lands her at the station with more charges than she expected. In the end, she was charged with shoplifting, obstruction, and failure to appear on a prior court date.
