Urban flooding in Lagos, particularly in areas like Agungi, Jakande, and Osakpa, is a recurring problem that cannot be solved by canal clearing alone; effective flood management requires comprehensive infrastructure improvements and long-term planning to protect residents' daily lives, businesses, and schools from disruption.

Lagos Floods Hit Agungi Residents本站添加:
Bernard, we can see the flood behind you, and the local government chairman has said that clearing of the canals should make things better. Do you think this is the case? Um sadly, Blessing, as you were saying, I don't think this is the case, sadly. Yes, some say that the canals are clearing of the canals have commenced.
Um but as you can see behind me, you know, it's it's Well, I say business as usual as far as floods are concerned. If you remember, I was saying that it's a it's a feeling of deja vu. This time last year, I was here talking about the same thing, and you were in the studio having the same conversation. If anything, I think today's rain and the flood that followed the rain is worse than the last time we had this conversation. So, clearly, I think it's beyond just clearing the canals. There's a lot more that needs to be done in areas like this, Agungi, Jakande, Osakpa, several areas across Eti-Osa local government area, basically. So, clearing of the canals is the first step, but the business of clearing the flood goes way beyond that.
Bernard, the rainy season is just even getting started, and we can see this magnitude of water. What do you think would be the effect if nothing is done on the residents there, especially those who have to go to work, go to school? I see people even hawking in the flood.
How do you think this will affect them?
Exactly, clearly, Blessing, your your your guess is as good as mine. First of all, it's going to affect business for most people who ply this area. While I was standing here earlier in the morning, when I just arrived here, there was a truck supposed to deliver or sell sachet water, the one we call pure water. On getting close to the area, the truck had to hit reverse and turn back. And that's one of many other businesses that will either be shut down or that would have to, you know, turn away because of the flooding. You clearly stated school children will be affected. They won't be able to go to school. People may not be able to go to work. For those who have to report on site, and then, of course, you know, regular day Nigerians, you know, and residents of this area will find it very difficult to do their daily businesses and go about their daily commutes. In In of the videos there, you'll see vehicles struggling to go through the water and then people wading through water that flood water that is already knee high. So clearly again to answer your question, Blessing, it's going to be a complete halt of of businesses around this area which definitely will be counterproductive for people within this region.
All right. Agbogi residents have have been stranded in the area due to hours of of rain and Bernard Akede has just joined us to give us an update. Now, the local government chairman has said that the clearing of the canals should help but that's what we see every year and that's the same thing we see every year.
But News Central is definitely still on standby to give you the updates once the canal is cleared. If it's cleared on time, if there is any difference, we're here to break it all down for you. Thank you, Bernard, for the update.
