[00:00:28]It happened so quickly. It almost took [music] your breath away. Did the double divorcee run away with a new lover? His words to us, I'll never forget this long as I live. It was, >> [music] >> I believe Teresa's in Cancun with a man named Elvis. Or has murder come to a small town in Georgia?

[00:00:47]>> [music] >> We absolutely looked at possible other missing people, possible serial killer.

[00:00:51]He would always brag to people about how he could take them out to the woods [music] and bury them and nobody'd ever find them. We we followed the evidence where it led us. This is not a phantom we're chasing. Turned out to be the monster in the end.

[00:01:05]FBI criminal pursuit Saturday, March 23rd, 2007 LaFayette, Georgia It's a typical morning in this sleepy southern town.

[00:01:26]And at the local 911 dispatch center, [music] the emergencies have been relatively minor. Walker County 911 until a troubling call comes in.

[00:01:37]Claire Carruthers reports that she hasn't seen her daughter Teresa in several days. [music] This time, dispatchers don't need to take a description.

[00:01:48]The missing woman, Teresa Parker, is one of their own. A 41-year-old dispatch supervisor.

[00:01:57]The news stuns Teresa's friend and fellow co-worker, Rhonda Knox.

[00:02:03]Honestly, your heart almost stops because Teresa was somebody I was in the room for 12 hours a day for 4 days a week in a row. I was with Teresa more than I was my family, really.

[00:02:18]Dispatchers learn Teresa hasn't spoken to her sister, [music] Christina, or returned her calls in more than 2 days.

[00:02:26]I could just feel it in me [music] that something was wrong. I just called her just over and over and over and over and over. I called the home, the cell.

[00:02:37]Nothing. I left messages, you know, nothing.

[00:02:43]It's so unlike Teresa. She always calls her mother and sister every day like clockwork.

[00:02:50]Teresa would talk to my mom every morning. She would even call mom in the evenings [music] from work when she would go to work. That's just how she was. She was dependable. Dependable.

[00:03:01]Even as a kid growing up in northern Georgia.

[00:03:04]Mother Teresa. I remember calling her that because she was always the one keeping everything together. She just took care of everybody.

[00:03:13]After graduation, Teresa married her high school sweetheart.

[00:03:17]The first marriage was kind of brief, >> [music] >> you know, just a few years. They were just too young and and things just didn't [music] work. She was very sad about that.

[00:03:31]After her divorce, Teresa took a job as a 911 dispatcher.

[00:03:37]She was a lady you didn't hear her cuss.

[00:03:39]She just was always there for us if we needed her and she was a very good supervisor. [music] She loved helping people. She was great at that and and she [music] loved her job. She pretty much sworn off men for a while, but you know, then went to work at the Lafayette Police Department.

[00:04:00]That's where Teresa met Sergeant Sam Parker, who served on the Lafayette Police Force with distinction for 12 years.

[00:04:08]Everybody liked Sam. He was very very funny. He's a former Marine and he dressed the part. He looked like the professional police officer that you would expect. For all his commendations, it was Sam's outgoing personality that finally won Teresa over.

[00:04:24]They were kind of like opposites. He was the loud rambunctious one and she was the [music] quiet one. Teresa was madly in love with him.

[00:04:31]Teresa and Sam Parker married on September 11th, 1993.

[00:04:37]They moved into a home in the countryside.

[00:04:40]Their romantic getaway from the stresses of police work.

[00:04:45]But after 13 years, their relationship went cold.

[00:04:49]I think she loved Sam. I really do. I think she I know she did in the beginning. I think that love just kind of started fading away through the years.

[00:05:02]Teresa was depressed in a way about it ending. She just wanted to be friends with him.

[00:05:08]Teresa and Sam both seemed to be accepting the split.

[00:05:13]It was all over but the paperwork.

[00:05:15]The finances and the household were already divided and Teresa was moving out.

[00:05:23]On Wednesday, Teresa had taken a few days off work to move into her new apartment.

[00:05:29]At first, her family thought Teresa was just too busy [music] to stay in touch.

[00:05:34]But by Saturday afternoon, Teresa hadn't been heard from in more than 2 days.

[00:05:41]Knowing Teresa like we knew her to be a responsible person, we all had our concerns that something something was wrong.

[00:05:50]We better just jump on this. As a matter of fact, everybody met that day, that Saturday, got several people together to start working on this.

[00:05:57]For Agent [music] James Harris of the Georgia Bureau of Investigations, this case hits close [music] to home. So, I asked him, "Who were we looking at?"

[00:06:06]Teresa Parker.

[00:06:08]And I remember a lump coming up my throat saying, "Oh, now I hope this doesn't go where it possibly could."

[00:06:15]For the Walker County Sheriff's Office, Teresa's case is personal.

[00:06:20]Too personal for them to handle on their own.

[00:06:23]The Sheriff's Office calls on the FBI to take the lead. It was a smart move on on the part of the sheriff to bring in outside forces that weren't familiar or didn't have any heartstrings with with the players in the case.

[00:06:38]FBI Special Agent Marcus Veazy of the Atlanta Division springs into action.

[00:06:44]He knows they have to hit the ground running.

[00:06:49]Three days had passed. Lots of time for evidence to decay or go away.

[00:06:55]Lots of time for stories to be built, alibis to be made. So, when we come in >> [music] >> late in the game like that, we're behind the curve.

[00:07:05]Agent's first stop is Teresa's new apartment.

[00:07:10]When they arrive, they find a note showing she missed an appointment on Thursday to have a new washer and dryer installed.

[00:07:18]Teresa was always where she was supposed to be when she was supposed to be there.

[00:07:22]So, when Teresa starts missing appointments, you know something's wrong.

[00:07:27]Agent Harris let himself in with a key code provided by the manager.

[00:07:32]He finds no signs of foul play.

[00:07:34]>> Teresa, is anybody in here?

[00:07:36]And more importantly, no sign of Teresa.

[00:07:45]>> A quick canvas results [music] in an early break.

[00:07:47]>> How was your last interaction with her?

[00:07:49]Well, I was checking my mail around Wednesday. A new neighbor tells agents she saw Teresa that [music] Wednesday night. She is seen by a neighbor having a conversation on the cell phone at around 10:45.

[00:08:03]Agents know Teresa was talking to her sister Christina around that time.

[00:08:08]About an hour later, she phoned her friend, Rhonda. She wanted me to come down to her apartment, help her move the next day, and just spend the night with her cuz she was kind of scared to stay in her apartment by herself for the first night.

[00:08:22]Teresa said she was heading home to spend one last night at her old house.

[00:08:29]About 5:00 a.m. on Thursday, Teresa called Rhonda's phone again.

[00:08:35]I got a hang-up call. I [music] called it back and didn't get an answer.

[00:08:40]Called it back again, never an answer.

[00:08:42]Agents wonder if this was just a hang-up call or an interrupted cry for help.

[00:08:51]Investigators head over to Teresa's home she shared with her soon-to-be ex-husband, Sam Parker.

[00:08:59]Sam is a 25-year veteran of the Lafayette Police Department with multiple commendations for bravery in the line of duty.

[00:09:08]After almost 15 years together, Sam and [music] Teresa's marriage failed.

[00:09:13]The couple agreed to split. The divorce was going really amicable. They had worked out things where he had agreed on everything.

[00:09:21]Sam answered all of our questions.

[00:09:22][music] Everything we asked him for, he he cooperated with us. You do what you got to do. Sam tells agents he last saw Teresa Wednesday evening before she drove over to her new apartment. [music] >> I need to check that box.

[00:09:36]Really? Yeah, really.

[00:09:40]You haven't seen her phone? Sam assures them that he'll do whatever he can to help the investigation.

[00:09:45]And he offers up his own opinion. Do whatever you got to do. He doesn't believe that Teresa's missing at all. He thinks she's gone on an impromptu vacation as she often does in times of stress.

[00:09:58]At one point during her first marriage, Teresa had left for a [music] couple of days just to kind of clear her head.

[00:10:07]In fact, just 10 days earlier, Teresa took off to Gatlinburg, Tennessee for a getaway.

[00:10:13]I'm so glad I decided to come up here.

[00:10:16]I really needed [music] this time to get away. She just wanted to have a few days just to relax and try to get her thoughts together, try to get her life [music] together.

[00:10:25]But Sam was suspicious of what Teresa was up to, so he did a little investigating. Look at this. That explains everything.

[00:10:34]It tells you everything you need to know.

[00:10:36]>> Sam had a receipt to a lodge in Gatlinburg, Tennessee which showed two people renting this cabin.

[00:10:45]Sam reveals another [music] even more troubling reason for his suspicions.

[00:10:50]He believes there's at least one other man in Teresa's life.

[00:10:55]It's a shock to those who know Teresa, but definitely an avenue they want to explore.

[00:11:02]We knew that we at least had some paths [music] that we had to go down, check out the possibilities of where Teresa might be.

[00:11:11]A list of unanswered questions is growing.

[00:11:15]Is Teresa a victim of a forced abduction, murder, or is quiet, mild-mannered Teresa Parker hiding a dark secret?

[00:11:29]March 2007, LaFayette, Georgia.

[00:11:34]911 dispatcher Teresa Parker has been missing for 4 days. Without any leads or evidence, investigators are left to consider the most likely scenario.

[00:11:46]Perhaps Teresa ran away.

[00:11:48]Overwhelmed by the stress of her pending divorce from her husband, Sam Parker.

[00:11:54]We were just hoping that possibly Teresa had just got off for a while to be by herself and that she would show back up either for work or you know, contact family members and things like that.

[00:12:04]While Harris is hopeful Teresa will show up for work on Monday, Agent Veasey is skeptical.

[00:12:13]If she were to take off spontaneously, one of the problems with that is that that might work for a night or two, but the thing that you're going to run into is you're going to need money.

[00:12:24]You're going to need your credit card.

[00:12:26]You're going to show up on the radar screen in some manner.

[00:12:31]He pulls up Teresa's credit card and bank records, but there is no activity since she disappeared.

[00:12:40]Her cell phone voicemail shows a flurry of calls from worried [music] friends and family.

[00:12:46]Hey girl, we're worried to death.

[00:12:51]Teresa, we're all looking for you, sweetheart.

[00:12:55]You know, I'm I'm filing a missing person's report because of the fact that we haven't seen Uh if you get this message, I need to hear from you.

[00:13:04]Teresa, please God. Please God, be okay.

[00:13:08]Please give me a Give me a call, please.

[00:13:10]I love you.

[00:13:11]Most heartbreaking of all, a call from distraught husband, Sam.

[00:13:17]Teresa, this is Sam. Uh It's Friday night, 3:00.

[00:13:22]Just worrying about you, no matter where you are.

[00:13:26]Baby, a call. Just Give me Give me a call. Stay in touch.

[00:13:30]Those messages, you could feel the panic in the voices. They got more and more desperate sounding as the days went on.

[00:13:38]Vizi believes if Teresa had gone off on her own for the weekend, surely she would call her family and friends to say she's okay.

[00:13:48]To aid in the investigation, Teresa's husband, Sam Parker, volunteers her phone bill hoping that it might provide agents with some fresh leads.

[00:13:58]Guys, I think I got something.

[00:14:01]It shows Teresa hasn't made any outgoing phone calls since that [music] brief hang-up to co-worker Rhonda early Thursday.

[00:14:09]But agents do find something interesting. That number's on this phone bill 20 different times. Teresa made over 20 phone calls to one phone number shortly before her disappearance.

[00:14:21][music] That's got something to do with what's going on.

[00:14:24]>> It's got to be. I've never seen that number before. Track down that number.

[00:14:29]Find my Teresa. [music] We will.

[00:14:39]A reverse number search reveals the number belongs to a police officer who works with Teresa. It would throw up red flags to anyone. That amount of calls going to this person's phone. Why would she be talking to this person so much?

[00:14:52]Why did she call him so much? It [music] warranted a more thorough investigation.

[00:14:58]It did indicate that there was something there, but it didn't indicate exactly what type of relationship.

[00:15:05]Investigators know Sam Parker suspects his wife is having [music] an affair.

[00:15:11]Could Teresa's co-worker be her secret lover?

[00:15:15]The officer's identity is kept out of the public as investigators probe the alleged affair in their ranks.

[00:15:22]I believe that a relationship might have been starting out. I believe that she started confiding in this police officer and and perhaps it gave the illusion of that there was possibility of a relationship.

[00:15:37]He admits she invited him to Gatlinburg for the weekend, but he didn't go.

[00:15:44]And the officer has a solid alibi.

[00:15:47]The night Teresa disappeared, he was on duty.

[00:15:51]But investigators wonder, was there another man in Teresa's life?

[00:15:56]Someone even her closest friends didn't know about.

[00:16:01]Maybe she was hiding out with someone else. It's a scenario we had to take into consideration.

[00:16:06]They look into Sam's suspicion that Teresa used her recent vacation to a mountain resort as a cover-up for a romantic liaison.

[00:16:16]Sam gave them a receipt showing she booked a double occupancy room.

[00:16:22]Sam did his own investigation about the trip she took.

[00:16:25]>> [music] >> He found out that the reservation was made under Teresa Barker with a B instead of a P. Agents wonder, did Teresa have a weekend tryst with a mystery man?

[00:16:39]We investigated into her trip speaking to the staff, speaking to the cleaning staff to determine whether or not there was anyone else there. How you doing?

[00:16:49]Agent Harris.

[00:16:50]reservation placed under Teresa Barker turns out to be nothing more than the hotel clerk misunderstanding Teresa's name [music] when she phoned in the reservation.

[00:17:02]Our investigation showed that there was no one else there. She was there alone.

[00:17:04]Thanks [music] to Sam. I appreciate that. We're looking at anything and everything.

[00:17:09]If anyone brings [music] up the fact that she may have been seeing someone or they had heard this, [music] we tried to follow those out as far as we could take them.

[00:17:19]In a case like this, you want to follow up all the leads and not have blinders on.

[00:17:25]With little else to go on, investigators turned their attention to the Parker household.

[00:17:33]By all accounts, Sam and Teresa were on good terms, >> [music] >> despite their pending divorce.

[00:17:39]But perhaps a deeper conflict festered behind closed doors.

[00:17:44]Sam is happy to oblige the request to search the couple's home. He let us search, and [music] I believe he said several times that whatever y'all want to do, whatever you want to search, you know, I got nothing to hide.

[00:17:56]Teresa's purse, keys, and cell phone are missing. But her SUV is [music] there.

[00:18:02]And more.

[00:18:04]We noticed in the bathroom that Teresa used that her makeup case was there, her contacts, contact solution, her toothbrush was still there. Things that anybody most likely is going to take with them. So, that started putting a few sparks in our head.

[00:18:22]When you overlay that with the scenario that she just walked away, it doesn't really fit because she left so many things behind that if you're going to walk away, you would have taken with you.

[00:18:33]Investigators wonder, could Teresa have been taken against her will?

[00:18:38]If she was abducted or if she had had a confrontation with a stranger or something.

[00:18:44]But the house is meticulously clean and shows no sign of a struggle.

[00:18:51]They impound Teresa's SUV for further analysis. [music] And then, a potential break in the case.

[00:19:00]Sam tells detectives his neighbor may have seen something related to the investigation. We did find a neighbor that had suggested to us that she had saw two men around the area of the Parker residence that might be something that we need to look at.

[00:19:15]Around the time of Teresa's disappearance, she spotted two suspicious men in a light-colored truck in Sam and Teresa's yard.

[00:19:25]She couldn't tell what they were doing, but they made her feel uneasy.

[00:19:30]Now, it's just a matter of tracking down [music] these two mystery men.

[00:19:35]Are they just victims of very bad timing, or was their timing just right to commit a terrible crime?

[00:19:44]It's been 5 days since anyone saw Teresa Parker in LaFayette, Georgia.

[00:19:50]While agents hold out hope that she's still alive, they know the chances of her survival are dwindling.

[00:19:56]They need answers fast.

[00:20:01]While canvassing the neighborhood outside Sam and Teresa's home, they may have hit on their strongest lead yet.

[00:20:09]We had a neighbor who had seen individuals [music] working in or walking around Teresa's yard.

[00:20:17]Along with the two strange men, the neighbor noticed a light-colored truck [music] outside the house around the time Teresa vanished.

[00:20:26]It's like searching for a needle in a haystack. Investigators run down every registered light-colored pickup in the area.

[00:20:35]We did find these two men. It took a while, but we did find them.

[00:20:38]Investigators believe the two men working in the yard were actually Sam and a neighbor's son.

[00:20:45]And the light-colored pickup more than likely belonged to Sam.

[00:20:50]We did not have any indication that any strangers had been to the door.

[00:20:54]No other neighbors provided us information about strangers in the area.

[00:20:58]Um so, we attributed that to the work that was going on at the house at the time.

[00:21:04]It, too, appears to be another dead end.

[00:21:09]Near the small town of LaFayette, scores of volunteers line up to walk through the thick Georgia forests.

[00:21:17]They search for any [music] signs of the missing 911 dispatcher, Teresa Parker.

[00:21:23]The woman who had always been there when anyone needed help. Teresa loved her job. All of officers called her Mama T [music] because she kind of just took care of everybody. She was Mama Mama T.

[00:21:35]You know.

[00:21:36]She was such an integral part of the law enforcement community. When a police officer is out by himself and is in need of help, she's that person on the other end of that radio that gets the help to him.

[00:21:50]So, it is emotional for me.

[00:21:54]The searchers find no trace of Teresa.

[00:21:57]We're looking for Teresa Parker.

[00:21:59]>> [music] >> Her description is given to the local media and investigators print missing person posters.

[00:22:06]We received hundreds and hundreds [music] of tips on our tip line.

[00:22:09]Individuals would call in and say, "I thought I saw her 20 miles away." Or "I thought I saw her in California." Or whatever. We checked and ran down all of them.

[00:22:17]>> It's not our girl.

[00:22:19]But none of the sightings could be verified as Teresa Parker.

[00:22:23]For investigators, it's one disappointment after another.

[00:22:29]I really hope Teresa walks in the door here any moment so we can just all go home and laugh about this. We really hoped that she would just show back up, but that slowly faded away.

[00:22:45]They have to face a terrible possibility. Teresa might be found eventually, but not alive.

[00:22:54]They keep Teresa's files with them 24 hours a day just in case.

[00:23:00]We were constantly getting phone calls about we found some bones here, we found what's possibly human teeth there. So, it became uh essential for us to have Teresa's case file and Teresa's dental x-rays with us at all times.

[00:23:17]And we kept those close. It was almost a reminder of this is a real person.

[00:23:26]This is not a phantom we're [music] chasing. This is someone's daughter.

[00:23:29]We wanted that as a reminder. It's a motivation to us when we're tired, when we've been at it a long time, we're going to keep going.

[00:23:39]Then, finally, a break in the case.

[00:23:42]Crime task scouring Teresa's impounded [music] SUV find something puzzling. The vehicle was very, very clean >> [music] >> to the point that you can actually see the pattern from the head on the vacuum cleaner going down and back, and this also includes going up the sides [music] of this vehicle. There wasn't a speck of anything in the back of that vehicle.

[00:24:02]>> [music] >> They carefully examine every inch of Teresa's car.

[00:24:07]The crime scene specialist said, "I think I found blood in the back of the vehicle."

[00:24:13]And when I got the discovery, it was a stab in the gut. It was just like, "Oh, here we go."

[00:24:18]Two small drops of blood are found in the latch of the rear door.

[00:24:25]The samples are collected and sent to the lab for comparison with DNA from Teresa's toothbrush.

[00:24:32]Lab results quickly determine the blood belongs to Teresa.

[00:24:37]It's the first sign that her life may have come to a tragic and violent end.

[00:24:45]Now, what we couldn't tell is how it got there, whether it was some type of cut or an injury during moving or not or or other evidence of of a body being back there. It it us very, very suspicious.

[00:24:57]Investigators have to look at the possibility that Teresa might be a victim of foul play.

[00:25:05]But who would want to hurt their 911 dispatcher?

[00:25:14]Investigators scour records for any other strange activity, homicides, or missing persons in the area. We don't have a lot of home invasions.

[00:25:25]We had no serial killers running loose.

[00:25:27]We had really nothing else going on in the county at that time. But we, you know, we we looked into all those possibilities, also.

[00:25:36]They wonder, could Teresa's disappearance have anything to do with Sam's job as a law enforcement officer?

[00:25:43]We actually looked into the possibility that this might be someone who Sam had had some kind of confrontation with or had made an arrest. Someone may have been trying to get back at Sam.

[00:25:54]They come up empty.

[00:25:59]Days slip by with no sign of Teresa.

[00:26:04]But every lead they've pursued has gone nowhere.

[00:26:07]So, they turn back to the information they do know.

[00:26:11]The timeline of Teresa's last known movements. Teresa goes missing on Wednesday night, March [music] 21st, into Thursday morning, March 22nd.

[00:26:22]We had to go back and create a timeline of everyone involved, their steps [music] from the last time she was seen leading up to the last time anyone [music] heard from her.

[00:26:35]What agents know is that Sam Parker last saw Teresa packing [music] boxes at their house on Wednesday. Where are you going?

[00:26:44]She stayed there until [music] around 7:00 p.m. when she left to go to her new apartment.

[00:26:50]She is seen by a neighbor >> [music] >> outside having a conversation on the cell phone at around 10:45.

[00:26:57]That's the last person that actually physically sees her.

[00:27:02]Sam tells agents he left their house to spend the night at the home of his new girlfriend. He said he had spent from about 11:30 on Wednesday evening till about 6:00 on Thursday morning at this person's house.

[00:27:17]At around 11:30 p.m., Teresa called her friend Rhonda before driving back to Sam's house to [music] collect the last of her belongings.

[00:27:26]I had talked to her and that's the last time anybody spoke with her.

[00:27:33]After her conversation with Rhonda, no one knows what happened to Teresa.

[00:27:42]Sam tells investigators he drove back over to his house around 6:30 Thursday morning to pick up some gear for a fishing trip.

[00:27:51]He saw Teresa's SUV parked in the garage.

[00:27:55]He loaded up his trolling motor, his battery, and then went fishing. He said that her car was there in the garage when he left.

[00:28:03]After that, it seems like Teresa fell off the map.

[00:28:08]Two days later, her family reported [music] her missing.

[00:28:12]Investigators realize there is one part of that timeline that isn't [music] solid.

[00:28:18]Sam's alibi. Sam, when we first started interviewing him, he wanted to stress to us that right around midnight or even a little bit before, he had gone to another [music] woman's house.

[00:28:31]His new girlfriend verifies he was with her, but tells agents he didn't arrive until after 1:30 a.m., almost 2 hours later than when he says.

[00:28:42]It's a small window of time, but big enough to raise suspicions.

[00:28:48]But it won't be what Sam says that finally breaks the case.

[00:28:52]It's a surprising voice from the past.

[00:28:56]One that unveils the true monster responsible for Teresa's disappearance.

[00:29:04]It's been a week since Teresa Parker was last seen alive.

[00:29:09]Even if the odds are now against her [music] survival, those closest to her continue to hold out hope. As the days would go by, it got harder and harder.

[00:29:19]You still in the back of your mind think, by the grace of God, maybe she would just walk up.

[00:29:26]Despite hundreds of man-hours looking for any trace of her, the only thing investigators have is two drops of blood on the back of Teresa's SUV.

[00:29:38]A review of Teresa's last movements reveal a small hole in the alibi of her estranged husband, Sam Parker.

[00:29:48]There is a 2-hour window that is unaccounted for.

[00:29:52]Agents know that's plenty of time to kill someone and hide a body where no one could find it.

[00:29:59]In fact, Sam's been bragging about doing just that for years.

[00:30:04]He would say things like, "We live in a vast wilderness.

[00:30:10]You could You could kill someone and hide the body and no one would ever find it."

[00:30:15]It's something that may come back to haunt him.

[00:30:19]There's something else that's not ringing true.

[00:30:24]Sam told investigators he went by his house the next morning at 6:30 a.m.

[00:30:30]He said Teresa's SUV was parked in the garage.

[00:30:35]But what Sam doesn't know is that Teresa's 5:00 a.m. hang-up call to Rhonda raised a red flag.

[00:30:42]She's never called me at 5:00 in the morning, ever. And I started to worry something's wrong.

[00:30:48]Rhonda phoned some on-duty police officers to do a welfare check on Teresa around 7:00 a.m.

[00:30:55]Police officers had gone out to the house early that morning and saw Sam's truck parked there and was able to tell that Teresa's 4Runner was gone.

[00:31:08]Perhaps Sam was mistaken about the time, but it seems unlikely a police sergeant with 25 years experience would get a detail like that wrong. When you start lying about simple things, you're hiding bigger things. When he started lying to us in the beginning of our timeline, well, we we we knew [music] that we were probably having to go down a path we really didn't want to go.

[00:31:33]The time has come to investigate one of their own. In a missing persons investigation, you have a basic strategy you you try to follow.

[00:31:43]Now, when you put a police officer in that mix that who is possibly a suspect, it changes a lot of what you do and how you do it because he knows >> Do whatever you got to do. the type of questions you're going to ask.

[00:31:57]I bring the brand of the FBI with me and he's going to be suspicious of that.

[00:32:03]We would prepare every time we went to talk to him.

[00:32:08]And it was specific in trying to get him to think like a police officer as opposed to thinking like a suspect.

[00:32:15]We'd want to keep that rapport going with him.

[00:32:18]In the [music] event that the pressure became so much that he would eventually crack.

[00:32:24]It's an intense mind game that both sides are well trained to play and it's about to escalate.

[00:32:32]Hey, how you doing? Sam Parker knows he's under an investigative microscope when he comes in for an interview with Agent Harris.

[00:32:42]This isn't looking good.

[00:32:45]We're finding her. We haven't found her yet. Don't have anything to say she's alive or dead.

[00:32:51]You know that, right?

[00:32:55]I need to eliminate you as being a suspect in what happened to her.

[00:33:01]I understand. You know that.

[00:33:04]Sam Parker was a trained police officer.

[00:33:06]He knows what techniques will be used to investigate. He knows how to interrogate a suspect. He knows how to hide evidence.

[00:33:13]You have questions for her?

[00:33:15]Yeah, where's Trisha?

[00:33:17]I don't know.

[00:33:21]You don't get it.

[00:33:24]Wow.

[00:33:27]Wow.

[00:33:28]I don't know, Sam. I don't know. We're doing our best.

[00:33:32]I know you are. I know you are.

[00:33:34]I know you are.

[00:33:36]During the interview, Sam would almost act like he was falling apart and start to cry, but there were no tears. I believe Sam tried to make us think that he was concerned and worried, but it just didn't come across as >> [music] >> as real.

[00:33:56]Agent Harris is also suspicious of fresh bruising on Sam's arms and takes photographs.

[00:34:04]Looking for any [music] kind of evidence, investigators obtain a warrant to search Sam's locker at Lafayette Police Headquarters. Grim Reaper nice surprise.

[00:34:15]And they find something shocking. All right, we got a problem.

[00:34:18]A stockpile of C4, a high-powered plastic explosive.

[00:34:23]Sam advised that the C4 was part of training material. Had it gone off, would have done considerable damage and possibly could have injured someone. You want to see me, Chief? Come on and have a seat, Sam.

[00:34:39]We did a search of your locker.

[00:34:41]Can you explain this?

[00:34:44]I don't know what to tell you, Chief.

[00:34:45]>> Because he was keeping the C4 in his locker, the police chief at the time terminated his employment. Sam, I want you to back to your gun. Come on.

[00:34:54]Don't do this to me, Chief.

[00:34:56]On my desk.

[00:35:00]I can't help you anymore.

[00:35:05]Explosives aren't the only questionable item in Sam's locker. All right. In the locker we found a poster that depicted a abused female with a black eye and a and a cut lip.

[00:35:18]And it said something to the effect of, "This [ __ ] didn't know when to shut up."

[00:35:22]Go figure. It makes you wonder what Sam thinks about domestic violence and in the investigation that we were doing it meant a lot to us.

[00:35:37]Investigators turn to a woman who might know Sam best.

[00:35:42]His ex-wife, [music] Keela Baird.

[00:35:45]And she has plenty to tell them.

[00:35:48]The first 3 years of our marriage were great, you know, that was Jack only and all of a sudden here came Hyde.

[00:35:55]After enduring terrifying arguments Keela filed for divorce and Sam moved out.

[00:36:06]A few weeks later, as Keela relaxed on her couch watching TV an enraged Sam returned to the house.

[00:36:13]Scared me to death. He just come straight, [music] makes a bee line straight over to me. He says, "I hear you've been out." And I'm like, "What are you talking about?"

[00:36:22]Sam accuses her of cheating on him and wrapped his [music] hands around her throat.

[00:36:28]I can't breathe, >> [music] >> you know, and he is so enraged and mad, and he takes out his service revolver and held it to my head and said, "What I ought to do is just blow your brains all over this wall."

[00:36:41]That point, I just said, "Go ahead and do it." I think all of that jerked him back to reality and got him off of me.

[00:36:50]Sam backed down.

[00:36:53]That night, the look on his face and his eyes and this rage. Here he is in his uniform. People ask me, "Why didn't you call the police?"

[00:37:04]And I'm like, "Who was I going to call? He's a policeman."

[00:37:10]For the agents investigating Teresa's missing person case, Kela's story has an ominous ring to it.

[00:37:19]But was Sam ever violent with Teresa?

[00:37:22]She never talked about him being abusive or anything, but in hindsight, you know, we all talked about the bruises on occasion.

[00:37:33]Bruises that Teresa always explained away.

[00:37:37]What is this?

[00:37:38]Come on now, what is this? It's [music] nothing.

[00:37:42]This is not nothing. It's not a big deal. Just let it go.

[00:37:49]In the last few months of her marriage, Teresa finally let on to her family that [music] things weren't good at home.

[00:37:56]She had to leave. She'd had enough, and she went to my sister's home just to get away. He called and had left a message [music] saying that if she didn't come home, he was going to slit all of her animals' throats, and they would be hanging in the trees when she got home.

[00:38:13]And there was other troubling behavior.

[00:38:17]In May 2002, >> [music] >> a 911 caller reported a scene in the Parker's front yard.

[00:38:24]Officers arrived on the scene and they found all of Teresa's clothing out on the front lawn.

[00:38:30]Teresa's phone [music] had been smashed and was in pieces on the the driveway.

[00:38:35]She had some type of abrasions.

[00:38:37]>> [music] >> Teresa refused to press any charges saying she had scratched herself because she was anxious.

[00:38:44]I believe Teresa kept it all quiet because she still loved him. She She did not want him to lose his job.

[00:38:52]She was very private. Didn't want want anybody to know.

[00:38:57]With no reports or photos, it's hard for agents to know what really happened.

[00:39:03]What were you thinking?

[00:39:05]But it does indicate Sam can lose control. You make me sick.

[00:39:12]And now investigators worry it may happen again.

[00:39:17]Sam, unemployed and under suspicion, is feeling the pressure.

[00:39:22]It began to weigh on him and his personality changed. His the way he interacted with us changed.

[00:39:28]He went from being engaging to the point he stopped talking to to most everybody. [music] 3 weeks after Teresa disappeared, another 911 call comes in.

[00:39:43]Sam Parker is sitting outside his house in his Marine uniform with a shotgun to his chin threatening to blow his own head off.

[00:40:00]Sam Parker is threatening to commit suicide.

[00:40:03]The LaFayette, Georgia police sergeant has just been fired after 25 [music] years on the force.

[00:40:11]He's also the prime suspect in the disappearance of his ex-wife, Teresa.

[00:40:17]Sam, put the weapon down. Lower it. He was sitting on his front porch in his Marine Corps uniform with a long gun between his legs and under his [music] chin.

[00:40:28]I was sitting here in dispatch when the call came in. We were all up here worried to death.

[00:40:32]>> We were sitting here on pins and needles. We didn't know if he was going to go through it or not.

[00:40:37]Officers surround him and try to talk Sam out of pulling the trigger.

[00:40:43]I believe Sam felt like he was being considered a suspect and not a victim.

[00:40:49]So, I believe his uh alleged suicide attempt was to portray himself as a uh worried husband and a victim of our investigation.

[00:41:00]And it didn't work.

[00:41:02]Sam spends the night in the hospital while the DA assigned to the case debated her options.

[00:41:09]Nobody's stalking her. She didn't have an irate co-worker that hated her. There was no stranger running about the woods in Lafayette killing people. Everything appears to be pointing to Sam Parker.

[00:41:21]But without any [music] physical evidence linking him to a crime, the DA fears he might get away with [music] murder.

[00:41:28]There've only been that I could find five cases in in Georgia that had been tried without a body.

[00:41:35]I'm worried about it all the time.

[00:41:37]Do I have enough? Will there be enough?

[00:41:40]But it just kept coming back to the fact that there was nobody that had a motive to hurt Teresa, to even be angry with her, except Sam Parker.

[00:41:53]Then, in a surprise move, Sam appears on the evening news and talks about Teresa.

[00:42:00]I've been Waco'd at Ruby Ridge by the FBI.

[00:42:04]He told the local reporter that he thought he knew where she was, but he wasn't going to say. He didn't He didn't want to bother her.

[00:42:13]We traveled out to Sam's house.

[00:42:16]Said, "All right, Sam. You told um the news that you knew where she was.

[00:42:21]Tell us where she's at and it'll all be over with."

[00:42:25]And his words to us, and I'll never forget this long as I live, was, "I believe [music] Teresa's in Cancun with a man named Elvis."

[00:42:36]And I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I didn't know what he meant, and I thought he was being funny.

[00:42:43]Sam refuses to cooperate further.

[00:42:49]Was this Teresa's mystery lover?

[00:42:52]Agents discover Teresa had met an Elvis impersonator while vacationing at a Cancun resort.

[00:42:59]Authorities located Elvis, but find no trace of Teresa.

[00:43:06]All investigators can do at this stage is watch and wait.

[00:43:14]The case drags on almost a full year.

[00:43:18]We were convinced Sam did it, but now we had to prove that Teresa was dead.

[00:43:24]We needed to let as much time as we could go by to show that there have been no [music] credit card transactions, no bank transactions at all, no phone calls, no contacting family, [music] friends. We just had to show that Teresa Parker is just no longer alive.

[00:43:44]Finally, on February 4th, 2008, nearly 11 months after Teresa vanished, FBI and GBI agents arrest Sam Parker for the murder of his ex-wife.

[00:43:59]It's only the sixth murder case in Georgia history to be tried without a body.

[00:44:05]Armed with circumstantial evidence, the DA builds her case on Sam's lies, his pattern of abuse towards women, and two drops of blood.

[00:44:16]We want to show his lies. We want to show his timeline. We want to show little bits of the evidence. We wanted to show that, you know, Teresa wasn't alive. That she wasn't in Cancun with Elvis.

[00:44:30]Prosecutor Patterson tells the jury when Teresa returned to Sam's house that night, he was there. They argued, and he choked her.

[00:44:40]We always theorized that he came up behind her and put a chokehold on her, and she was trying to push him off of her. And you can see the bruises on the insides of his arms.

[00:44:50]Sam put Teresa's body in the back of her SUV.

[00:44:54]One of the two drops of blood found on the SUV hatchback belonged to Teresa.

[00:45:00]The other included DNA from Sam Parker.

[00:45:04]Sam then packed Teresa's corpse in her vehicle and drove off to dispose of her remains.

[00:45:17]After 4 days, the jury returns a guilty verdict.

[00:45:21]>> [music] >> The judge renders sentence right there on the spot.

[00:45:26]He said, "In this matter, I am sentencing you to the rest of your natural life in prison." And it happened so quickly, it almost took your breath away.

[00:45:36]This was only a partial victory when Sam was found guilty.

[00:45:41]Uh that wasn't the end for us. We still wanted to find Teresa. She was one of our own, and we wanted to bring her home.

[00:45:49]Despite his conviction, Sam refuses to admit [music] guilt or tell anyone what he had done with Teresa's body.

[00:45:57]He was still in control of the situation because he wasn't going to reveal where she was, where her body was, what he'd done to her.

[00:46:06]Oh, it was so hard not knowing where she was. She's out there, probably in the woods somewhere, you [music] know, thrown out like garbage. You know, that was horrible.

[00:46:21]Search teams continued to look for Teresa Parker [music] despite the long odds of ever finding her. It's like looking for a needle in miles and miles and miles of haystack because there's so much land out there.

[00:46:38]Almost a year to the day after Sam Parker's conviction, a farmer trips over a human jawbone 16 miles from where Sam's father had lived.

[00:46:52]The skull is positively identified >> [music] >> as Teresa.

[00:46:57]And it was a very chilling moment because the amount of time and effort and heart and soul that we had put in, here she was.

[00:47:05]And there were days when I didn't think we would ever find her.

[00:47:09]And and we did.

[00:47:11]It was wonderful to be able to lay her to rest and not have to worry anymore.

[00:47:18]That was a miracle. How she was found was a miracle in itself. [music] Many remember Teresa as the 911 dispatcher who had always been there to help everyone. They only wish that she had been able to help herself.

[00:47:34]She was one night away from a new life.

[00:47:38]She couldn't make it. I wish every day Teresa would have told somebody and made that call because maybe if she did she would still be here.

[00:47:48]The thing that is disappointing is that Sam as a police officer is supposed to be the good guy. Sam is supposed to be the one that comes in and is the hero and saves people.

[00:48:01]But it turned out to be the monster in the end.
