Hogarth’s Satire & Prophecy🎨#artanalysis #arthistory #artsecrets #art #barocco #hogarth #museumAdded:
If there is such a thing as a perfect marriage of convenience, this is it. A fair trade, his noble title [music] for her father's merchant fortune. But what's missing here is love, respect, or even a shred of decency. They live separate lives, and [music] they live them quite despicably. William Hogarth, Marriage à la Mode, The Tête-à-Tête, 1743. The second chapter of his series on the fallout of a hollow marriage. The clock reads 12:20, not midnight, [music] noon. And our heroes haven't even gone to bed yet. Let's examine the crime scene and find the evidence. Look at the husband. He crawled home at dawn. That broken sword, a classic symbol of impotence. The dog has caught a scent. A mistress's cap is peeking out of the viscount's [music] pocket. But the real evidence is on his neck. That black spot isn't a beauty mark, it's a patch. In the 18th century, that's how you hid the sores [music] of the French disease, syphilis. A grim price for his merry lifestyle. And what [music] about the wife? After her own sleepless night, she looks suspiciously satisfied. While her husband decomposes in his chair, she stretches [music] lustfully, glancing at him with a hint of contempt. That damp spot on her dress screams louder than the open sheet music and instruments, standard symbols for amorous play.
[music] Cards on the floor, overturned furniture, a weary servant. Everything points to a very busy night. While [music] these two play at being a family, their reality is spiraling into the abyss. The poor soul on the left is their [music] steward. He holds a stack of unpaid bills and a single receipt.
He's leaving in horror, realizing this family is bankrupt. The house is falling apart as fast as their reputation.
[music] Love isn't eternal, and every family has its problems. But in this six-painting series, Hogarth combined biting caricature with a grim prophecy.
When a relationship is built solely on greed, [music] avarice, and lust, a tragic end is inevitable.
