Violent shaking from a 6 magnitude earthquake damages island homes and rattles residents.
It happened yesterday. Residents across Hawaii are continuing cleanup efforts after a magnitude 6 Friday night caused damage to homes, shifted structures off foundations, and rattled communities across the state. Video sent to Hawaii News Now captured the violent shaking inside Randy Huli's Chicken and Ribs where shelves crashed to the ground as people rushed for safety.
Let's see. Do we have that?
>> Residents are cleaning up and making repairs after last night's magnitude 6.0 earthquake rocked the island of Hawaii, damaging homes, triggering rock slides, and knocking out power across parts of South Kona. Our Raquel Calo reports.
Video sent to Hawaii News Now captures the terrifying moment when the earthquake ripped through Randy Huli's Chicken and Ribs Warehouse in Kealakekua. It shook the building, sending shelves crashing down and people scrambling for safety.
It was a a hard jerk, and then it sounded like a bomb went off. Randy Morris says his warehouse had only minor damage, but at his daughter's home, the quake shifted the entire house off its foundation.
It just felt like I was on one of those carnival rides that like jerk your body and you can't really like your body can't keep up with it. It just sounded like the whole house exploded. As the home cracked apart, Asia Morris fearfully says her first thought was getting her children out safely. And then my mom tried to scoop me out of bed, and then I tried to go back, and then I fell into a crack in the deck.
And my leg slip slipped right through.
The deck split in half. The house is on the ground. It jumped off of the foundation.
The walls are cracked.
The toilet is misplaced in the bathroom.
Other Hawaii Island residents also reported damages from the force of the quake. The tank was just a little bit tilted. Then in the middle of the night we had a aftershock, and [snorts] then it woke us up cuz the whole tank fell and hit the house and was dumping out up and making repairs after last night's magnitude 6.0 earthquake rocked the island of Hawaii, damaging homes, triggering rock slides, and knocking out power across parts of South Kona. Our Calo reports.
