Coastal defense projects often involve installing rock groins (perpendicular rock structures) along beaches to prevent sand erosion by interrupting longshore drift; however, such infrastructure can generate public controversy as it may alter the natural beach appearance and potentially create hazards for beachgoers and rescue operations.

Huge Works North Blackpool! (Little Bispham)
Added:Welcome to another video. Welcome on the wild side and I am here in Blackpool and I'm up north in this video. I'm up here at Little Bispam. Yes, this is Little Bispam. Uh a little bit further up there is Anchor's home here on the file coast up from Blackpool. I'm about what four say about four miles north of Blackpool Tower. We might be able to see that. In fact, I can see it now in the distance.
It's a long way. So, we're up north in this video, and there's quite a lot going on up here. Um, as you can see here, we've got a load of um blue uh fencing, hoarding, which is hiding a big construction site with diggers in it and everything. Before I forget, if you like videos of Blackpool and Sometimes Beyond, and you're not subscribed to the channel, hit the subscribe button.
There's a good reason for that because I'm the content creator of the year.
Yeah, sorry folks. I couldn't help it. I won another award last week at the Tower Ballroom. First time I've been in the Tower Ballroom for over 40 years. I didn't really want to be uh nominated for a competition, funny enough. I wanted to I don't want to be in this, you know. I'm not one for the big big occasion, but I got nominated. I went there and I got the award, didn't I? I can't help myself, can I? I can't help it. But anyway, like I say, hit subscribe if you like videos of Blackpool and sometimes beyond. But anyway, we're going to take a little bit of a nosy around this here cuz there's a lot going on. They've got some massive diggers over here. They've got some big rocks. What are they up to? Let's go and find out, shall we? [music] I don't know if you can see Blackpool Tower over there. You got the Norbert Castle. That's Blackpool's most notorious hotel, the Britannia Hotel.
Norbert Castle. You might just be able to see the Blackpool Tower sticking up above those houses there.
in the distance.
But we're up here at Little Bispen and I'm actually on top of um one of these um buildings here at the moment. I'm actually stood on the roof here um of I think it's Filed Angling Club. So if I just turn around, I'll just show you this here. Look. Um I think there was another structure here that you could walk on and it had flag poles. I don't Does anyone remember it? It had flag pole. I'm not sure if they got rid of it. Um, I don't know. Can someone let me know?
Because it was definitely around here somewhere. But if I turn around, obviously you can see now we've got this. I mean, it stretches all the way from Well, I don't know how far it goes.
We can have a look. Um, but we've got the footpath here. The We're on the cliffs. Co's got cliffs here. You see? I mean, we're quite high up from the sea here, but there is a lot of diggers in there. There's a lot of massive rocks.
And I'm just going to get down from here. and uh we'll have a little nosy and see if we can find out what it's all about. I believe it's something to do with the um the scheme to protect the sand because what they're going to do in Blackpool and this is you know between the peers so I'll just tell you if you don't know is there is a scheme going ahead later this year. I don't think it's confirmed yet, but they're going to be putting in rock groins. So, you know what groins are? G O G R O Y N E S. Not those. Not the other type of groin.
Um, groins. Yeah, they're going to be putting rock groins in. They normally make them out of wood. In fact, if you look at old pictures of Blackpool, you can see some wooden groins. But now, they're going to be shoving a load of rock ones in there. And I think it's going to break up the beach. I think it's really going to mess up Blackpool Beach. Let me know what you think.
They're going to put them all the way between the peers, south pier to north pier, and maybe a bit further up. And it's all to stop the sand erosion. Yeah.
Oh, that's what they say. I've just come down off that cliff there. And this is I was stood on top of there. File Boat Angling Club.
This building here, that's quite an oldest looking building.
And uh I don't think I've ever seen it open, funny enough. And we've got another building here which is newer. In fact, it looks like it's uh is that K Rend. It's been rendered fairly recently.
So, let's have a look at this. Oh, just look at that. It's just one big massive There's loads of people out for a walk.
The weather's a lot better today than it was yesterday. It was terrible yesterday. Well, yesterday morning anyway. just got spotted there. I've actually come down to a lower level here. Look. So, this is lower walk. If you were to walk along here, you would eventually end up at Blackpool North Pier. The lower walk continues pretty much up to the pier and then it just the prominard levels off there.
So, it was one of those people there that spotted me. Let's have a little look at the beach because if you look down here, the seaw wall is a different design to a Blackfield. We've got the step design, haven't we? For most of the prominard anyway, between the south pier and uh the north pier here. It's a bit different. Now, I'm not sure if they if they're going to be doing the seaw wall.
It could be. But I just want to show you this way because if you look this way, we've got this slipway here that goes down and we've got these rocks. Can you see? Now, those are the rocks there that I think that they're going to be putting in. They're absolutely huge rocks. And I think what I'll do now is we'll just have a little walk over to that site and we'll have a little bit of a nose here and uh we'll see what we can see.
I'm using my new camera for this as well, my Osmo Pocket version 4, and I had quite a bit of trouble getting it going. I think I'm going to have to send it back. I've had I've had quite a few issues with it. Uh, it wasn't even recording before. I pressed the record button, it wasn't recording. It was tried to turn it off. It wouldn't turn off. Oh, I think I'm going to have to send it back and see if they can send me another one. But it's working at the moment. Let me know what you think. Is Is it any good? Is the picture any good?
should be. But as you can see, we've got uh we got this ramp here and there's loads of like sand and everything. So, there's obviously been diggers coming down here bringing these massive rock.
Look at these rocks here. Look at the size of that.
That is massive granite, I think. Yeah, that's granite, isn't it?
Uh obviously that way takes you up to anchor home.
Um, [sighs] I can't seem to get out here now unless I go the long way around up there.
So, that's looking further north. And if you carry on up there, you will get to Cleveland. It's probably about a 20 minute, maybe not that, 15 to 20 minute walk from here. Cleveland. So, this is the anchor's home area and little Bisp. We're actually this this area where we are now is Little Bisp.
Just got a sign there, little bispin.
And the there's another sign on this side as well. So, we'll have a little nose in here. See what we can see, shall we?
Got a nice little station there. Little Biff Station.
Anyway, it's Balfa Beach. I think that's just a car park maybe. Or offices in this one here. Look site office.
So this is the office for the offices for Balfa be in there and all the serious equipment.
Just got to wave off the guy in the truck there is in this compound over here. It's absolutely massive.
There's not a whole lot we can see from here. But uh yeah, it's all to do with the coastal defense, isn't it? The uh the rock groins. We got some pretty serious equipment in here, but we can't see a whole lot from here. I'll have a walk down and see if we can see anything from a bit further down.
So, I'm just going to head this way along the foot path. And that's where I was there. And I'm just trying to remember now uh this structure.
I thought it was one of them. There was a structure around here that had flag poles on it and you could walk up it and I think I think they've got rid of it. I think it was over there.
Let me know if you can remember.
But anyway, look at that view now. Wow.
And the weather's so much better as well. The wind's died down. It's so much nicer now in Blackpool. What a difference a day makes. even yesterday.
I mean, the start got off to a really bad start with the high winds and everything, but it did calm down a little bit.
I wonder if I can reach over the fence with my camera.
Well, I found something to stand on that's a little bit higher up and we can get a look at some of this machinery and some of those massive rocks that they're going to be using.
But, we're going to be uh sticking a load of these along Blackpool Beach. What do you think?
Yeah, I think it's going to ruin the look of Blackpool Beach.
Yeah. So, they're going to be putting all these along here, aren't they? So, this long sweeping beach that we see now, um, is going to have a whole load of rocks shoved on it just like what they did up the road at Cleveland. They've done the same up there at Cleveland.
Can't quite see it from here, but they've done the same up there. And I think it looks a bit of a mess, to tell you the truth. Just noticed this hole in the in the door here. Look at this. Have a sneaky look in there. What can you see? Ooh, rock trucks. Hey, you know what? One of these actually got stuck on the beach the other day. I saw it on Facebook. You know the big rock trucks, the quarry trucks there? You can see the back end of one there. Look, one of them actually got stuck in the sand. I don't know how they managed to rescue it, but uh I saw that on Facebook. Yeah.
So, we managed to get a sneaky look inside at the machinery and those massive rocks which they're going to be putting on the beach. Let me know what you think. It's a little bit controversial. And you know what? The RNLI in Blackpool have kicked off about it. They've been kicking off about these rocks because they reckon that um some people might get trapped in the rocks.
It'll hinder their, you know, with the rescues when they do the rescues of people on in the sea and that the RNL lie in Blackpool have been kicking off about these rocks. Yeah, what about that? They are in a liar kicking off about them as well. There's a memorial here to those lost at sea. Mightier than the thunders of many waters, mightier than the waves of the sea. The Lord on high is mighty. God is always greater than all of our troubles.
A little memorial there.
Yeah, it's a brilliant part of the prominard up here. You know, up here on the cliffs, you can walk along here.
Lots of people walking the dogs, ride your bike up and down. Look at this.
It's a bit hilly. And just look at that view as well.
But we're just coming to the end of this compound now.
And you can see just look at this vast expanse. It's it's a bit like being in Lim, you know, with Lim Green. We've got this big expanse of grass up here. Look at that there. Look.
Plenty of places for people to let the dogs play if the if the tide's in. We'll just have a look around this side. Let's check out some of these flats over there. We got this block of flat. They look a bit plain actually.
Let me know what you think.
I think they look a bit plain these splats. Nor keyed court.
I think it'd be quite expensive actually to live up here. I will say one thing.
They've kept the grass verd quite nice.
That looks quite neat, doesn't it?
There's one for sale there with Susan if you might want to check it out. It does say on the water. Here we go. tram.
There's a bit of trouble about the trams as well. I might need to do another video on that. Yeah, it's been kicking off about the new trams. So, look out for that video. I might do that one tomorrow.
But we're now on the other side.
Sounds a bit Scandinavian, doesn't it?
No road. That one there sounds a bit Scandinavian. I take it the no means no. I don't know what key means. If anyone knows, put it in the comments. These machines here look a bit like those uh demolition vehicles, don't they? You know, the big demolition. We've seen plenty of them in Blackpool, haven't we?
They've probably got different attachments on them for sorting out all these rocks.
Between the tram tracks, we've got uh horse tail. That that weed that grows.
It's horrible stuff that isn't it.
Horse. It doesn't even flower either.
But it grows everywhere. You can't get rid of it. And then in the winter it dies down. But it it dies down below the soil and and if you just leave it, it'll just come straight back again.
Yeah. It's terrible that week.
Oh, it's looking a lot better now. Look at this now. The clouds are clearing.
The sun's coming out.
Yeah, it's actually pretty busy here just at this junction here. And this road is actually called Prince's Way that takes you through Anchor's home. And we'll just take a little look at this little Bispin station. It's quite nice, isn't it? Look at that there. Look, little Bispin. We've even got a little window up there. The round window. Let's have a look through the round window.
Kind of back to where we started.
Well, there goes a tram heading north with the library of the new 10pin bowling alley which has just opened in the Blackpool central where the olden cinema was. I say old, it wasn't that old. You know the Odin cinema.
Not far from the football round. Well, that's open now. 10pin bowling. So, that's heading up to Fleetwood. So, that was a bit of a change of scenery, wasn't it? But I'm now just by the loop here.
Little Bispamin loop. We've got a tram loop. Yeah. So the trams can turn around here and go back. They don't have to go all the way to Fleetwood. But the only trams I've ever seen turn around here are the heritage trams. I don't know if they've ever turned, you know, the modern trams, let me know if you've ever seen a modern tram turning round on this loop here at Brisbane. I'm not sure [sighs and gasps] if they they can go around it.
But anyway, there you go. Oh, a little bit of a change of scenery for you.
Something a little bit different. So, they're going to be shoving a load of rocks down along the beach and they're going to be doing it in Blackpool, but it's kicking off about it. They are in a line, like I say, they're not happy about it. And there's a lot of other people on Facebook. It's always kicking off on Facebook, isn't it? A lot of people with opinions say, "Oh, is it going to ruin the beach?" You know, uh, but we'll have to wait and see what happens, won't we? It's supposed to be started later this year, so we'll wait and see, won't we? But anyway, that's it for this video. If you like the video, hit the like button and also hit subscribe and tick the bell for notifications of new videos. And I'll see you again on the next one.
