Choral Evensong is a traditional Anglican evening service that combines scripture readings, hymns, and congregational prayer. The service typically includes readings from the Old and New Testaments (such as Deuteronomy and Ephesians), the Apostles' Creed, the Lord's Prayer, and intercessory prayers for the church and world. The service is led by clergy and performed by the cathedral choir, creating a worship experience that integrates music, scripture, and communal prayer.

Choral Evensong - Wednesday 29 April 2026 | Canterbury CathedralAdded:
I don't know.
A very warm welcome to all of you who are gathered here in the cathedral at Canterbury for our service of coral even song. As we gather here today, we do so on the feast of Katherine of Sienna, the 14th century uh teacher of the faith who inspires Christian tradition today with her writings and her spiritual life.
As we gather here, our service for this evening is sung for us by our girl choristers. And whether you are here in person or you're watching this service online, wherever you are, please do bring your prayers and intentions as we join together in this act of worship.
God us in the beginning.
Amen.
Please be seated as the choir sings Psalm 143, which can be found on page 530 of the small red prayer books. We stand for the gloria at the end.

me beginning at the 12th verse.
So now, oh Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you? only to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments of the Lord your God, and his decrees that I am commanding you today for your own well-being.
Although heaven and the heaven of heavens belong to the Lord your God, the earth with all that is in it, yet the Lord set his heart in love and your ancestors alone and chose you, their descendants after them out of all the peoples as it is today.
Circumcise then the foreskin of your heart and do not be stubborn any longer.
For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who is not partial and takes no bribe, who executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and loves the stranger, providing them with food and clothing.
You also shall love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt. You shall fear the Lord your God.
Him alone you shall worship. To him you shall hold fast and by his name you shall swear.
He is your praise. He is your God who has done for you these great and awesome things that your own eyes have seen.
Your ancestors went down to Egypt, 70 persons, and now the Lord your God has made you as numerous as the stars in heaven.
Here ends the first lesson.

The fifth chapter of St. Paul's letter to the Ephesians beginning at the first verse. St. Paul continues in this letter to give instructions to the church in Ephesus of how to conduct themselves in their new life in the spirit.
God in Christ has forgiven you.
Therefore, be imitators of God as beloved children and live in love as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
But fornication and impurity of any kind or greed must not even be mentioned among you, as is proper among saints.
entirely out of place is obscene, silly, and vulgar talk. But instead, let there be thanksgiving.
Be sure of this, that no fornicator or impure person or one who is greedy, that is an idoltor, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
Let no one deceive you with empty words.
For because of these things, the wroth of God comes on those who are disobedient.
Therefore, do not be associated with them. For once you were in darkness, but now in the Lord you are in light. Live as children of light, for the fruit of the light is found in all that is good and right and true.
Try to find out what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is shameful even to mention what such people do secretly.
But everything exposed by the light becomes visible. For everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore, it says, "Sleep her awake, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you."
Here ends the second lesson.

He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and siteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From then he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. Let us pray.
Lord, we pray for your church throughout the world and for the mission and ministry of the churches in the Anglican Communion. Praying for Sarah, Archbishop of Canterbury.
We pray today for the Dasis of Worcester in the Church of England.
We pray for this Dasis of Canterbury and for Rose, Bishop of Dova.
praying for the chaplain in the Eastbridge Dinery in the cathedral. We pray for the ministry of the cathedral to pilgrims and visitors.
As we remember Katherine of Sienna, we pray for all teachers of the faith and all those who are called to speak truth to power.
God of compassion, who gave your servant Katherine of Sienna a wondrous love of the passion of Christ, grant that your people may be united to him in his majesty and rejoice forever in the revelation of his glory through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Lord, we pray for your world.
We pray especially for those who find themselves unable to find happiness and contentment this day.
We pray for those who suffer from anxiety, depression or mental illness of any kind.
For those to whom life has brought the grief of loss of loved ones or loss of opportunities.
For those who struggle to find meaning or purpose in life, that through your abiding presence and through the gentle care of others, they may come to know peace and fulfillment.
God of all healing, who called the light to shine in the darkness at creation, and in whose eternal light there is no darkness at all.
Be yourself a light of hope to those who dwell in the darkness of suffering this day. Be a support to the fearful, a listener to the lonely, and a purpose to those in despair. That among the confusions and struggles of this world, they would find the path that leads to the fullness of life, joy, and peace in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
We take a few moments to bring before God those matters and concerns on our hearts.
We join our prayers together by saying the grace, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all ever more. Amen.
As you leave today, our stewards will be holding baskets to receive any cash donations and there is also a contactless device near the door as you leave. We ask you to be generous in your donation as our music mission and care of the cathedral buildings costs more than £30,000 every day. Thank you for your support.
We stand to sing our hymn from the red ancient and modern hymn books number 628.
