[00:00:03]But if safety checks fail, it can also put life at risk. Recently, five children with thalassemia tested HIV positive after blood transfusion at a government hospital in Jharkhand. This makes blood transfusion safety very important for UPSC.

[00:00:20]Blood transfusion means transferring blood or blood components from a donor to a patient.

[00:00:26]Doctors use it to restore blood volume, improve oxygen carrying capacity, or correct blood deficiencies.

[00:00:34]Thalassemia patients often need regular transfusions.

[00:00:38]Thalassemia is a hereditary blood disorder.

[00:00:41]In this disease, the body makes less hemoglobin or defective hemoglobin.

[00:00:46]Hemoglobin carries oxygen inside red blood cells.

[00:00:50]When hemoglobin remains low, the patient develops chronic anemia.

[00:00:55]That is why many thalassemia patients depend on repeated blood transfusions.

[00:01:00]But transfusion needs two types of safety.

[00:01:03]First, blood group matching.

[00:01:05]Second, infection screening.

[00:01:08]For matching, remember the and Rh systems. Red blood cells may have A antigen, B antigen, both, or none.

[00:01:16]This gives four main groups: A, B, AB, and O.

[00:01:21]There is also the Rh factor.

[00:01:23]If Rh is present, the blood group is positive.

[00:01:27]If Rh is absent, it is negative.

[00:01:30]Together, they create common blood types like A positive, B negative, O positive, O negative, AB positive, and AB negative.

[00:01:39]If the wrong blood enters the body, the immune system may attack it.

[00:01:44]This can become dangerous.

[00:01:46]For red blood cell transfusion, O negative is called the universal donor because it lacks A, B, and Rh antigens.

[00:01:55]AB positive is called the universal recipient because it has AB and Rh antigens and usually lacks antibodies against them. But hospitals still do proper matching and cross-matching.

[00:02:08]Universal donor does not mean careless transfusion.

[00:02:12]The second safety check is infection screening. Every donated blood unit must be tested properly before transfusion.

[00:02:19]It should not carry infections like HIV, hepatitis, or other transfusion-transmitted diseases.

[00:02:26]So, remember this clearly.

[00:02:28]Blood transfusion is life-saving.
