Electrolysis! Extremely Rusted Tool!

[00:00:01]Yo, guys. What's going on? I am George and this is you want to watch. Welcome back to the shop and welcome back to another project. Today, we got us a grease bar. This is specifically designed to separate the plates on a leaf spring so you can put a layer of grease in there. So, when the springs are in motion, you don't hear that nasty squeak. Uh this tool is absolutely trashed. I think it was laying in a pond or something for about the last 50 years. I have no idea. But, it is horrible.

[00:00:32]We got us a sheet of plexi here. We are going to create us an electrolysis tank.

[00:00:37]Um It's going to be a long video, so we'll do it in two parts. I say we jump right into it. Let's go.

[00:00:49]After I get this tank kind of laid out and uh cut up, I'll show you what this jam bar looks like.

[00:01:04]I don't know if that's going to do it any justice, but this thing is absolutely crusty and nasty.

[00:01:14]There was two makers of these jam bars.

[00:01:17]There's um Plumb and another company. I don't remember what the other company is right off hand.

[00:01:25]But, I do know Plumb made them and it would be absolutely awesome if I can find Plumb written on this.

[00:01:32]To be honest with you, I don't think I'm going to find anything written on that.

[00:01:36]Look at the scale. This is just absolutely atrocious.

[00:01:40]But, I think it's going to be a pretty fun project.

[00:02:17]I don't know if it's going to work. I want to test it out to see. It's why I bought it. It was $7.

[00:02:23]Um in theory, cuz this is real thin stuff, I think it would be okay.

[00:02:31]I don't know. Normally, I just run plexi glass on a table saw and just be done with it, but I wanted to try this. This thing is absolutely deadly. This thing is really sharp.

[00:07:39]And uh well, I just I lost interest in it.

[00:07:44]That was back when a lot of people were doing electrolysis.

[00:07:48]That's before I even had a YouTube channel.

[00:07:53]But, I was literally electrolysis-ing everything.

[00:08:08]We are going to try and create us a tank.

[00:08:12]Uh let me get reset up. That way you guys have a better view and uh we'll go from there.

[00:08:20]All right, guys. I know it's going to be a little hard to see trying to see clear plastic on a wooden table here, but bear with me.

[00:08:44]So, my hope My hope is that I can get this to just set up.

[00:09:54]All right, guys. We're We're to throw us a bead of some clear silicone in there.

[00:09:59]Get it nice and forced down into the seam.

[00:10:11]I just want to make sure that I'm getting good coverage in there.

[00:10:35]I'm not a big fan of these little orange caulk guns.

[00:10:41]I have a really nice Lennox at work.

[00:11:43]All righty, guys. I got everything all hooked up. I got the grease bar suspended.

[00:11:48]Got my sacrificial metal in there. I put a little structure support across the middle just so when the water goes in there it won't spread the mold out too much.

[00:12:04]I got 1 gallon mixed up so far.

[00:12:06]Chrissy's inside doing the other.

[00:12:09]So, we'll see what happens.

[00:14:25]But I say we just jump right into it with a flap disc, maybe a grinder.

[00:14:40]We'll start trying to take care of these facets.

[00:14:47]I think that's the only thing we can do.

[00:15:13]All righty. Well I knew I knew I wasn't going to get all the pitting out of this. It's virtually impossible.

[00:15:22]Uh I'd have to grind this thing down to like the width of a pencil.

[00:15:26]Um so, what I want to do I guess from about here down, I'm going to try and high polish it.

[00:15:35]From the pry end down, I'm going to high polish it. And this whole middle section here think I'm just going to think I'm going to paint it.

[00:15:46]Probably use some body filler, fill in the big divots and then give it a nice paint job.

[00:15:52]But I do want to get the pry end and the separation end here cuz it's not really a wrench. It's just what you would use for leverage. Um >> [snorts] >> Yeah, I think that's what I want to do.

[00:16:06]First, I'm going to soak this in some DeoxIT and uh try and get as much of the rust off as possible. So, let's jump into that.

[00:16:19]All right. I'm doing multiple projects at the same time here, guys. So, please forgive me.

[00:16:25]Um trying to clean up the shop and get stuff ready to sell.

[00:16:29]So, I literally have junk just everywhere.

[00:16:32]Um This is done. It's been soaking in the DeoxIT overnight.

[00:16:40]And uh I think we're ready to wire wheel this thing down.

[00:16:46]Get it cleaned up.

[00:16:51]And we'll continue on with this restoration.

[00:17:10]Still a lot of pitting, but 90% of the rust is off there.

[00:18:21]>> [snorts] >> All righty, guys. Well, it's the following morning. I'm going to sand off all this Bondo on here.

[00:18:39]And uh we'll get to priming and spraying this thing. So, LET'S GO.

[00:19:14]ALL RIGHT. WE'RE GOING TO LET THAT DRY UP. WE'LL SPRAY the other half.

[00:19:18]And then we'll put our thick coat on there. That'll give it that nice hammered look. So, be right back.
