George elegantly demonstrates how fundamental electrochemistry can be harnessed to preserve mechanical history without the need for destructive force. It is a sophisticated yet accessible celebration of scientific utility in everyday restoration.

Electrolysis! Extremely Rusted Tool!Added:
Yo, guys. What's going on? I am George and this is you want to watch. Welcome back to the shop and welcome back to another project. Today, we got us a grease bar. This is specifically designed to separate the plates on a leaf spring so you can put a layer of grease in there. So, when the springs are in motion, you don't hear that nasty squeak. Uh this tool is absolutely trashed. I think it was laying in a pond or something for about the last 50 years. I have no idea. But, it is horrible.
We got us a sheet of plexi here. We are going to create us an electrolysis tank.
Um It's going to be a long video, so we'll do it in two parts. I say we jump right into it. Let's go.
After I get this tank kind of laid out and uh cut up, I'll show you what this jam bar looks like.
Ah, what the hell? I guess I can show you right now.
I don't know if that's going to do it any justice, but this thing is absolutely crusty and nasty.
There was two makers of these jam bars.
There's um Plumb and another company. I don't remember what the other company is right off hand.
But, I do know Plumb made them and it would be absolutely awesome if I can find Plumb written on this.
To be honest with you, I don't think I'm going to find anything written on that.
Look at the scale. This is just absolutely atrocious.
But, I think it's going to be a pretty fun project.
>> [clears throat] >> Let me get this uh at least cut up.
Oh, I bought a new tool.
I actually bought a brand new tool.
Let me go find it.
I bought a plastic cutter.
I don't know if it's going to work. I want to test it out to see. It's why I bought it. It was $7.
Um in theory, cuz this is real thin stuff, I think it would be okay.
I don't know. Normally, I just run plexi glass on a table saw and just be done with it, but I wanted to try this. This thing is absolutely deadly. This thing is really sharp.
So, we are going to put our square on here and score this.
Hopefully, not cut our fingers off.
>> [screaming] >> Wow, THAT'S A HORRIBLE SOUND.
>> [screaming] >> LIKE I SAID, THAT'S A DIABOLICAL SOUND.
That should have done it.
I just don't want to break it, you know.
All right.
That actually worked pretty damn good.
Yep, that worked pretty damn good. I'm quite happy with that. Let me find a utility knife and I will cut the plastic off that.
Absolutely amazing.
>> [laughter] [sighs] >> Now, I got to figure out which piece was which.
I believe it's this one.
Was it that one?
Yeah, we can make that work.
I'm going to save this piece for a project later on in the future.
It's going to go right down in there.
All right.
So, our overall, let's say we want to make it uh I don't know, 10 in. Seems good.
Seems a bit good.
Just chunks of rust falling off everything.
>> [clears throat] >> 10 in. Seems 10 in. Seems All right. So, this is going to be our bottom.
If everything works out right.
And it's Fletcher brand.
Hopefully, that's showing up.
Look at that, Fletcher. Same people that make the glass cutters.
Pretty cool.
Not a bad investment for seven bucks.
Happy with that.
All right. Let's see if this stuff will snap.
Okay.
Yep.
And I think I'm going to get that one done.
Give us some issues.
There we go.
Cool.
And we still have more to go.
Still got plenty of that stuff left.
So, I haven't done electrolysis in quite some time.
I was really big into it a while ago.
And uh well, I just I lost interest in it.
That was back when a lot of people were doing electrolysis.
That's before I even had a YouTube channel.
But, I was literally electrolysis-ing everything.
Look at that, nice and clear.
Pretty cool.
We are going to try and create us a tank.
Uh let me get reset up. That way you guys have a better view and uh we'll go from there.
All right, guys. I know it's going to be a little hard to see trying to see clear plastic on a wooden table here, but bear with me.
I will get us through this as quick and as painless as possible.
So, my hope My hope is that I can get this to just set up.
This damn tape is so sticky.
I think it'll work, hopefully.
We are going to silicone the inside.
Make sure that we have good coverage.
Uh Let me get a utility knife.
All right, guys. We're We're to throw us a bead of some clear silicone in there.
Get it nice and forced down into the seam.
I don't really care about how it looks.
I just want to make sure that I'm getting good coverage in there.
I'm not a big fan of these little orange caulk guns.
I have a really nice Lennox at work.
>> [snorts] >> All right.
>> [clears throat] >> Just going to tool it in a little bit.
A little tighter of a bead.
>> [snorts] >> That should be good enough.
Should be.
All righty, guys. I got everything all hooked up. I got the grease bar suspended.
Got my sacrificial metal in there. I put a little structure support across the middle just so when the water goes in there it won't spread the mold out too much.
I'm hoping this is going to hold.
I got 1 gallon mixed up so far.
Chrissy's inside doing the other.
So, we'll see what happens.
>> [snorts] >> Now, try that.
See if that gets better conductivity.
>> [bell] >> I'm going to go dump this out.
And we can get rid of this tank for a while.
Don't spill it, George. Don't spill it.
And when we clean up my mess here I will start I guess wire wheeling or uh wire brushing the rust off this.
And we'll see where we're at.
So, give me a quick minute here.
We'll get readjusted.
Now, let me show you how nasty and pitted that is.
That is pretty bad, guys.
I doubt we'll ever get a name off this.
But I say we just jump right into it with a flap disc, maybe a grinder.
We'll start trying to take care of these facets.
I think that's the only thing we can do.
All righty. Well I knew I knew I wasn't going to get all the pitting out of this. It's virtually impossible.
Uh I'd have to grind this thing down to like the width of a pencil.
Um so, what I want to do I guess from about here down, I'm going to try and high polish it.
From the pry end down, I'm going to high polish it. And this whole middle section here think I'm just going to think I'm going to paint it.
Probably use some body filler, fill in the big divots and then give it a nice paint job.
But I do want to get the pry end and the separation end here cuz it's not really a wrench. It's just what you would use for leverage. Um >> [snorts] >> Yeah, I think that's what I want to do.
First, I'm going to soak this in some DeoxIT and uh try and get as much of the rust off as possible. So, let's jump into that.
All right. I'm doing multiple projects at the same time here, guys. So, please forgive me.
Um trying to clean up the shop and get stuff ready to sell.
So, I literally have junk just everywhere.
Um This is done. It's been soaking in the DeoxIT overnight.
And uh I think we're ready to wire wheel this thing down.
Get it cleaned up.
And we'll continue on with this restoration.
>> [snorts] >> It cleaned up big time.
Still a lot of pitting, but 90% of the rust is off there.
That's what we were looking for.
Cool.
>> [snorts] >> That should be plenty for that.
Oop. Maybe too much.
>> [snorts] >> All righty, guys. Well, it's the following morning. I'm going to sand off all this Bondo on here.
And uh we'll get to priming and spraying this thing. So, LET'S GO.
ALL RIGHT. WE'RE GOING TO LET THAT DRY UP. WE'LL SPRAY the other half.
And then we'll put our thick coat on there. That'll give it that nice hammered look. So, be right back.
All righty, guys. Well, we are all done with the grease bar. We gave it a nice polished side to it.
It looks really nice. We gave it a nice polished end. We got off all that pitting. Gave it a fantastic looking verdi hammered paint job. I'm quite happy with it. I hope you guys are, too.
Like always, stay safe, be safe, and we will see you next week with another.
Bye.
