Harry Potter Book 4 [CH 25](CEFR A2+) Audiobook with Full Text
Added:Chapter 25 The Egg and the Eye Harry does not know how long it will take to discover the secret of the golden egg.
He decides to open it late at night, when the castle is quiet and no one will disturb him.
Cedric Diggory told him to use the prefects’ bathroom.
Harry does not want to accept help from Cedric, but the bathroom is private.
Only a few students can enter it, so it is the safest place.
Harry plans everything carefully.
Once before, Filch caught him walking around the castle at night.
Harry does not want that to happen again.
He decides to bring two important things.
First, the Invisibility Cloak.
Second, the Mischief Maker’s Map.
The map shows the entire castle.
It also shows the people inside it.
Small dots move across the map.
Each dot is labeled with a name.
If anyone is walking near Harry, he will see them before they see him.
Late on Thursday night, Harry goes to bed early.
When the room is quiet, he puts on the cloak and walks downstairs quietly.
Ron waits near the portrait hole.
“Good luck,” Ron whispers as Harry slips past him.
Harry enters the dark corridor.
The castle is silent.
Moonlight shines through the tall windows.
Harry checks the Mischief Maker’s Map frequently to make sure no one is nearby.
Soon he reaches the statue of Conrad the Confused.
Conrad is a wizard who looks confused and wears his gloves on the wrong hands.
Cedric told Harry the password.
“Pine fresh,” Harry whispers.
The door opens slowly.
Harry enters the prefects’ bathroom and closes the door.
Then he removes the cloak and looks around.
The room is beautiful.
Light from candles shines from a large chandelier.
The floor and walls are white marble.
In the center of the room is a large bath.
The bath looks like a small swimming pool.
Around the bath are many golden taps to turn on the water.
Each tap has a jewel of a different color in its handle.
There are long white curtains covering the windows.
There is also a large pile of soft towels in the corner.
There is a painting on one wall.
It shows a mermaid sleeping on a rock.
Her long blond hair covers her face.
And she snores softly in her sleep.
Harry places the cloak, the map, and the egg next to the bath.
Then he turns on several taps.
Immediately he notices something surprising.
Each tap pours something different into the water.
One tap sends pink and blue bubbles the size of footballs.
Another pours white foam that covers the water.
Another sends purple steam that smells strongly of perfume.
Harry laughs.
He tries several taps.
Soon the bath fills with hot water and bubbles.
Harry takes off his pajamas and steps into the bath.
The water is very deep.
His feet almost do not touch the bottom.
He swims a few times across the bath and then stops beside the egg.
The warm water and colorful steam feel wonderful.
Harry still does not understand the egg.
But finally he lifts it and opens it.
The horrible screaming sound fills the bathroom again.
The noise is very loud in the marble bathroom.
Harry quickly closes the egg.
The sound is just as terrible as before.
Cedric’s advice does not seem very helpful.
He feels annoyed.
Then suddenly a voice speaks.
“I would put it in the water, if I were you.”
Harry jumps in shock.
He looks around quickly.
A ghost floats above one of the taps.
It is Moaning Myrtle.
“Myrtle!” Harry says angrily.
“I’m - I’m not wearing anything!
I’m naked!”
The foam in the bath hides him almost completely, but Harry still feels embarrassed.
“I closed my eyes when you got into the bath,” Myrtle says sadly.
“You haven’t visited me for a very long time.”
“Well… I’m not supposed to go into your bathroom,” Harry says.
“It’s a girls’ bathroom.”
“That didn’t bother you before,” Myrtle replies unhappily.
This is true.
Harry used to visit Myrtle’s bathroom often.
He and Ron secretly made Polyjuice Potion there.
“Well,” Myrtle says, “Put the egg in the water.
That’s what Cedric Diggory did.”
“You watched him too?” Harry asks.
“Sometimes,” Myrtle answers.
Harry quickly wraps a towel around his waist.
He gets out of the bath and picks up the egg.
Then he returns to the water.
“Open it under the water,” Myrtle tells him.
Harry lowers the egg under the surface of the water and opens it.
This time the egg does not scream.
Instead, Harry hears a strange bubbling song under the water.
“You need to put your head under the water too,” Myrtle says.
Harry takes a deep breath and lowers his head under the water.
Now he hears the song clearly.
Soft voices sing from the egg: Look for us where our voices sound, We cannot sing above the ground.
And while you search, remember this: We’ve taken what you’ll certainly miss.
For an hour you will have to look, To find again what we took.
But past an hour, the time is black — Too late. It will not come back.
Harry rises out of the water.
“Did you hear it?” Myrtle asks.
“Yes,” Harry says.
“But I need to listen again.”
He dives under the water several more times until he remembers every word.
Then he floats in the warm water and thinks.
“I have to find voices that cannot sing above the ground,” Harry says slowly.
“You’re slow, aren’t you?” Myrtle says happily.
Harry thinks carefully.
If the voices can only be heard underwater, then they must belong to creatures that live underwater.
“What lives in the lake?” Harry asks.
“Besides the giant squid?”
“Oh, many things,” Myrtle says.
Harry looks around the bathroom.
Then he sees the painting of the sleeping mermaid.
“Myrtle… are there merpeople in the lake?”
“Very good!” Myrtle says.
“It took Diggory much longer to think of that!”
Harry suddenly understands.
“That must be it!” he says excitedly.
“The second task is in the lake.
I have to find the merpeople!”
But then his excitement disappears.
A serious problem appears in his mind.
Harry is not a good swimmer.
The Hogwarts lake is huge and very deep.
“Myrtle,” Harry says slowly, “how am I supposed to breathe underwater?”
Immediately Myrtle begins to cry.
“You’re very mean and selfish!” she shouts.
“What?” Harry asks, confused.
“You’re talking about breathing!” Myrtle cries.
“You know I can’t breathe!”
Harry sighs.
“Sorry,” he says.
Myrtle begins telling a long story about the day she died and the girl who found her body.
But Harry is not listening very carefully.
He is thinking about the song again.
“We’ve taken what you’ll certainly miss.”
The merpeople are going to take something from him.
But what?
Finally Harry climbs out of the bath.
He uses a towel to dry himself.
Then he puts his clothes back on.
He is about to leave whey Myrtle speaks.
“Will you visit me again?” she asks sadly.
“I’ll try,” Harry says.
He puts on the Invisibility Cloak and leaves the bathroom.
In the corridor, Harry studies the Mischief Maker’s Map.
Filch and Mrs. Norris are in their office.
Peeves is bouncing around the trophy room.
Everything seems quiet.
Harry begins walking back toward Gryffindor Tower.
Then something strange catches his eye.
A single dot moves inside Snape’s office.
But the name beside the dot is not Severus Snape.
It says Bartemius Crouch.
Harry stares at the map.
Mr. Crouch is supposed to be very sick.
So what is he doing secretly inside Hogwarts at one o’clock in the morning?
Harry watches the dot move around the room.
Finally curiosity wins.
He decides to go and see.
He begins walking toward Snape’s office.
But something goes wrong while he is going down the stairs.
Harry steps onto a trick step.
Neville always forgets this step.
Harry loses his balance.
He tries to pull his leg out.
At the same moment he drops the golden egg.
It crashes down the stairs.
It hits every step very loudly.
The egg bursts open and begins screaming.
Harry also drops the Mischief Maker’s Map.
He cannot reach it.
Then he hears a furious voice below.
The voice is familiar.
“PEEVES!” It is Filch.
Filch picks up the egg and closes it.
Harry stands frozen.
Filch pulls back the tapestry at the bottom of the stairs.
He looks up the staircase.
“Trying to hide from me, are you?” Filch says softly.
“I’m going to get you, Peeves!”
Filch begins climbing the stairs.
Mrs. Norris walks beside him.
Her bright eyes look directly at Harry.
Harry wonders if the cloak works on cats.
Then another voice speaks.
“Filch? What’s going on?” It is Snape.
Filch explains about the egg.
Snape says someone has broken into his office.
Suddenly another person appears at the bottom of the stairs.
Mad-Eye Moody.
“Are you having a pajama party tonight?” Moody growls.
While they talk, Moody’s magical eye turns toward Harry.
The eye can see through the Invisibility Cloak.
Harry and Moody stare directly at each other.
Moody understands everything immediately.
Then Moody notices the Mischief Maker’s Map on the stairs.
“You’ve dropped something,” Moody says.
Snape quickly points his wand.
“Accio parchment!”
But the map flies past him and lands in Moody’s hand.
“My mistake,” Moody says calmly.
“It’s mine.”
Snape’seyes look angry.
“Potter,” Snape says suddenly.
“There’s nothing there, Snape!” Moody says loudly.
After a tense moment, Snape finally leaves.
Filch follows him.
He is still complaining about Peeves.
Moody slowly climbs the stairs.
“You almost got caught, Potter,” he mutters.
He pulls Harry’s leg free from the trick step.
Harry sighs with relief.
Moody studies the map with amazement.
“This map is amazing, Potter.”
Then he asks a question.
“Did you see who broke into Snape’s office?”
“Yes,” Harry says.
“It was Mr. Crouch.”
Moody looks shocked.
“Crouch?” he says quietly.
He studies the map again.
“That’s very interesting,” Moody mutters.
Finally Moody looks at Harry.
“Can I borrow this map?”
Harry hesitates.
He loves the map.
But Moody just saved him from serious trouble.
“Okay,” Harry says.
They walk back toward Gryffindor Tower together.
Before Harry leaves, Moody stops him.
“Have you ever thought about becoming an Auror, Potter?”
“No,” Harry says in surprise.
“You should consider it,” Moody says thoughtfully.
Harry returns quietly to his dormitory.
As he lies in bed, he thinks about many things.
Why was Crouch secretly inside Hogwarts?
What was he looking for in Snape’s office?
And why did Moody want the map so badly?
Harry falls asleep wondering what it all means.
