[00:00:01]Chapter 25 The Egg and the Eye Harry does not know how long it will take to discover the secret of the golden egg.

[00:00:21]He decides to open it late at night, when the castle is quiet and no one will disturb him.

[00:00:31]Cedric Diggory told him to use the prefects’ bathroom.

[00:00:36]Harry does not want to accept help from Cedric, but the bathroom is private.

[00:00:43]Only a few students can enter it, so it is the safest place.

[00:00:49]Harry plans everything carefully.

[00:00:53]Once before, Filch caught him walking around the castle at night.

[00:00:59]Harry does not want that to happen again.

[00:01:04]He decides to bring two important things.

[00:01:09]First, the Invisibility Cloak.

[00:01:12]Second, the Mischief Maker’s Map.

[00:01:16]The map shows the entire castle.

[00:01:19]It also shows the people inside it.

[00:01:23]Small dots move across the map.

[00:01:26]Each dot is labeled with a name.

[00:01:30]If anyone is walking near Harry, he will see them before they see him.

[00:01:37]Late on Thursday night, Harry goes to bed early.

[00:01:42]When the room is quiet, he puts on the cloak and walks downstairs quietly.

[00:01:51]Ron waits near the portrait hole.

[00:01:54]“Good luck,” Ron whispers as Harry slips past him.

[00:02:00]Harry enters the dark corridor.

[00:02:03]The castle is silent.

[00:02:05]Moonlight shines through the tall windows.

[00:02:09]Harry checks the Mischief Maker’s Map frequently to make sure no one is nearby.

[00:02:18]Soon he reaches the statue of Conrad the Confused.

[00:02:25]Conrad is a wizard who looks confused and wears his gloves on the wrong hands.

[00:02:32]Cedric told Harry the password.

[00:02:35]“Pine fresh,” Harry whispers.

[00:02:39]The door opens slowly.

[00:02:44]Harry enters the prefects’ bathroom and closes the door.

[00:02:49]Then he removes the cloak and looks around.

[00:02:53]The room is beautiful.

[00:03:00]Light from candles shines from a large chandelier.

[00:03:06]The floor and walls are white marble.

[00:03:12]In the center of the room is a large bath.

[00:03:16]The bath looks like a small swimming pool.

[00:03:22]Around the bath are many golden taps to turn on the water.

[00:03:29]Each tap has a jewel of a different color in its handle.

[00:03:36]There are long white curtains covering the windows.

[00:03:40]There is also a large pile of soft towels in the corner.

[00:03:48]There is a painting on one wall.

[00:03:50]It shows a mermaid sleeping on a rock.

[00:03:55]Her long blond hair covers her face.

[00:03:59]And she snores softly in her sleep.

[00:04:04]Harry places the cloak, the map, and the egg next to the bath.

[00:04:10]Then he turns on several taps.

[00:04:15]Immediately he notices something surprising.

[00:04:19]Each tap pours something different into the water.

[00:04:26]One tap sends pink and blue bubbles the size of footballs.

[00:04:34]Another pours white foam that covers the water.

[00:04:40]Another sends purple steam that smells strongly of perfume.

[00:04:48]Harry laughs.

[00:04:49]He tries several taps.

[00:04:52]Soon the bath fills with hot water and bubbles.

[00:04:58]Harry takes off his pajamas and steps into the bath.

[00:05:03]The water is very deep.

[00:05:06]His feet almost do not touch the bottom.

[00:05:09]He swims a few times across the bath and then stops beside the egg.

[00:05:16]The warm water and colorful steam feel wonderful.

[00:05:23]Harry still does not understand the egg.

[00:05:28]But finally he lifts it and opens it.

[00:05:32]The horrible screaming sound fills the bathroom again.

[00:05:41]The noise is very loud in the marble bathroom.

[00:05:45]Harry quickly closes the egg.

[00:05:48]The sound is just as terrible as before.

[00:05:54]Cedric’s advice does not seem very helpful.

[00:05:59]He feels annoyed.

[00:06:01]Then suddenly a voice speaks.

[00:06:06]“I would put it in the water, if I were you.”

[00:06:13]Harry jumps in shock.

[00:06:16]He looks around quickly.

[00:06:20]A ghost floats above one of the taps.

[00:06:23]It is Moaning Myrtle.

[00:06:28]“Myrtle!” Harry says angrily.

[00:06:31]“I’m - I’m not wearing anything!

[00:06:35]I’m naked!”

[00:06:37]The foam in the bath hides him almost completely, but Harry still feels embarrassed.

[00:06:47]“I closed my eyes when you got into the bath,” Myrtle says sadly.

[00:06:54]“You haven’t visited me for a very long time.”

[00:07:05]“Well… I’m not supposed to go into your bathroom,” Harry says.

[00:07:12]“It’s a girls’ bathroom.”

[00:07:15]“That didn’t bother you before,” Myrtle replies unhappily.

[00:07:22]This is true.

[00:07:24]Harry used to visit Myrtle’s bathroom often.

[00:07:28]He and Ron secretly made Polyjuice Potion there.

[00:07:35]“Well,” Myrtle says, “Put the egg in the water.

[00:07:42]That’s what Cedric Diggory did.”

[00:07:45]“You watched him too?” Harry asks.

[00:07:50]“Sometimes,” Myrtle answers.

[00:07:54]Harry quickly wraps a towel around his waist.

[00:07:58]He gets out of the bath and picks up the egg.

[00:08:02]Then he returns to the water.

[00:08:07]“Open it under the water,” Myrtle tells him.

[00:08:13]Harry lowers the egg under the surface of the water and opens it.

[00:08:21]This time the egg does not scream.

[00:08:25]Instead, Harry hears a strange bubbling song under the water.

[00:08:34]“You need to put your head under the water too,” Myrtle says.

[00:08:43]Harry takes a deep breath and lowers his head under the water.

[00:08:51]Now he hears the song clearly.

[00:08:55]Soft voices sing from the egg: Look for us where our voices sound, We cannot sing above the ground.

[00:09:24]And while you search, remember this: We’ve taken what you’ll certainly miss.

[00:09:32]For an hour you will have to look, To find again what we took.

[00:09:38]But past an hour, the time is black — Too late. It will not come back.

[00:09:52]Harry rises out of the water.

[00:09:55]“Did you hear it?” Myrtle asks.

[00:09:59]“Yes,” Harry says.

[00:10:02]“But I need to listen again.”

[00:10:05]He dives under the water several more times until he remembers every word.

[00:10:13]Then he floats in the warm water and thinks.

[00:10:17]“I have to find voices that cannot sing above the ground,” Harry says slowly.

[00:10:26]“You’re slow, aren’t you?” Myrtle says happily.

[00:10:34]Harry thinks carefully.

[00:10:37]If the voices can only be heard underwater, then they must belong to creatures that live underwater.

[00:10:47]“What lives in the lake?” Harry asks.

[00:10:51]“Besides the giant squid?”

[00:10:54]“Oh, many things,” Myrtle says.

[00:10:58]Harry looks around the bathroom.

[00:11:01]Then he sees the painting of the sleeping mermaid.

[00:11:08]“Myrtle… are there merpeople in the lake?”

[00:11:13]“Very good!” Myrtle says.

[00:11:17]“It took Diggory much longer to think of that!”

[00:11:23]Harry suddenly understands.

[00:11:26]“That must be it!” he says excitedly.

[00:11:32]“The second task is in the lake.

[00:11:35]I have to find the merpeople!”

[00:11:39]But then his excitement disappears.

[00:11:43]A serious problem appears in his mind.

[00:11:49]Harry is not a good swimmer.

[00:11:53]The Hogwarts lake is huge and very deep.

[00:11:58]“Myrtle,” Harry says slowly, “how am I supposed to breathe underwater?”

[00:12:06]Immediately Myrtle begins to cry.

[00:12:12]“You’re very mean and selfish!” she shouts.

[00:12:20]“What?” Harry asks, confused.

[00:12:24]“You’re talking about breathing!” Myrtle cries.

[00:12:35]“You know I can’t breathe!”

[00:12:42]Harry sighs.

[00:12:44]“Sorry,” he says.

[00:12:50]Myrtle begins telling a long story about the day she died and the girl who found her body.

[00:12:58]But Harry is not listening very carefully.

[00:13:04]He is thinking about the song again.

[00:13:08]“We’ve taken what you’ll certainly miss.”

[00:13:12]The merpeople are going to take something from him.

[00:13:17]But what?

[00:13:20]Finally Harry climbs out of the bath.

[00:13:24]He uses a towel to dry himself.

[00:13:27]Then he puts his clothes back on.

[00:13:31]He is about to leave whey Myrtle speaks.

[00:13:36]“Will you visit me again?” she asks sadly.

[00:13:42]“I’ll try,” Harry says.

[00:13:45]He puts on the Invisibility Cloak and leaves the bathroom.

[00:13:52]In the corridor, Harry studies the Mischief Maker’s Map.

[00:13:57]Filch and Mrs. Norris are in their office.

[00:14:01]Peeves is bouncing around the trophy room.

[00:14:06]Everything seems quiet.

[00:14:09]Harry begins walking back toward Gryffindor Tower.

[00:14:15]Then something strange catches his eye.

[00:14:20]A single dot moves inside Snape’s office.

[00:14:25]But the name beside the dot is not Severus Snape.

[00:14:30]It says Bartemius Crouch.

[00:14:34]Harry stares at the map.

[00:14:37]Mr. Crouch is supposed to be very sick.

[00:14:41]So what is he doing secretly inside Hogwarts at one o’clock in the morning?

[00:14:51]Harry watches the dot move around the room.

[00:14:55]Finally curiosity wins.

[00:14:58]He decides to go and see.

[00:15:02]He begins walking toward Snape’s office.

[00:15:05]But something goes wrong while he is going down the stairs.

[00:15:10]Harry steps onto a trick step.

[00:15:15]Neville always forgets this step.

[00:15:21]Harry loses his balance.

[00:15:23]He tries to pull his leg out.

[00:15:26]At the same moment he drops the golden egg.

[00:15:29]It crashes down the stairs.

[00:15:32]It hits every step very loudly.

[00:15:40]The egg bursts open and begins screaming.

[00:15:50]Harry also drops the Mischief Maker’s Map.

[00:15:53]He cannot reach it.

[00:15:55]Then he hears a furious voice below.

[00:16:00]The voice is familiar.

[00:16:05]“PEEVES!” It is Filch.

[00:16:09]Filch picks up the egg and closes it.

[00:16:13]Harry stands frozen.

[00:16:16]Filch pulls back the tapestry at the bottom of the stairs.

[00:16:21]He looks up the staircase.

[00:16:23]“Trying to hide from me, are you?” Filch says softly.

[00:16:30]“I’m going to get you, Peeves!”

[00:16:35]Filch begins climbing the stairs.

[00:16:38]Mrs. Norris walks beside him.

[00:16:42]Her bright eyes look directly at Harry.

[00:16:48]Harry wonders if the cloak works on cats.

[00:16:52]Then another voice speaks.

[00:16:55]“Filch? What’s going on?” It is Snape.

[00:17:02]Filch explains about the egg.

[00:17:05]Snape says someone has broken into his office.

[00:17:09]Suddenly another person appears at the bottom of the stairs.

[00:17:14]Mad-Eye Moody.

[00:17:16]“Are you having a pajama party tonight?” Moody growls.

[00:17:26]While they talk, Moody’s magical eye turns toward Harry.

[00:17:32]The eye can see through the Invisibility Cloak.

[00:17:37]Harry and Moody stare directly at each other.

[00:17:43]Moody understands everything immediately.

[00:17:48]Then Moody notices the Mischief Maker’s Map on the stairs.

[00:17:53]“You’ve dropped something,” Moody says.

[00:18:00]Snape quickly points his wand.

[00:18:03]“Accio parchment!”

[00:18:06]But the map flies past him and lands in Moody’s hand.

[00:18:11]“My mistake,” Moody says calmly.

[00:18:15]“It’s mine.”

[00:18:18]Snape’seyes look angry.

[00:18:22]“Potter,” Snape says suddenly.

[00:18:26]“There’s nothing there, Snape!” Moody says loudly.

[00:18:31]After a tense moment, Snape finally leaves.

[00:18:36]Filch follows him.

[00:18:38]He is still complaining about Peeves.

[00:18:43]Moody slowly climbs the stairs.

[00:18:48]“You almost got caught, Potter,” he mutters.

[00:18:54]He pulls Harry’s leg free from the trick step.

[00:18:58]Harry sighs with relief.

[00:19:02]Moody studies the map with amazement.

[00:19:05]“This map is amazing, Potter.”

[00:19:09]Then he asks a question.

[00:19:12]“Did you see who broke into Snape’s office?”

[00:19:17]“Yes,” Harry says.

[00:19:19]“It was Mr. Crouch.”

[00:19:22]Moody looks shocked.

[00:19:24]“Crouch?” he says quietly.

[00:19:29]He studies the map again.

[00:19:32]“That’s very interesting,” Moody mutters.

[00:19:37]Finally Moody looks at Harry.

[00:19:40]“Can I borrow this map?”

[00:19:43]Harry hesitates.

[00:19:45]He loves the map.

[00:19:47]But Moody just saved him from serious trouble.

[00:19:52]“Okay,” Harry says.

[00:19:54]They walk back toward Gryffindor Tower together.

[00:20:01]Before Harry leaves, Moody stops him.

[00:20:05]“Have you ever thought about becoming an Auror, Potter?”

[00:20:11]“No,” Harry says in surprise.

[00:20:14]“You should consider it,” Moody says thoughtfully.

[00:20:20]Harry returns quietly to his dormitory.

[00:20:26]As he lies in bed, he thinks about many things.

[00:20:31]Why was Crouch secretly inside Hogwarts?

[00:20:36]What was he looking for in Snape’s office?

[00:20:40]And why did Moody want the map so badly?

[00:20:44]Harry falls asleep wondering what it all means.
