The video skillfully deconstructs how the theater of a funeral often serves as a stage for individual ego rather than collective mourning. It offers a sobering reminder that the most honest family conversations usually happen only when it is too late to change the outcome.

This Funeral Brought Out The WORST In Everybody 😬 | Kingdom Come RecapAdded:
Listen, this movie is a not so subtle reminder that death and funerals bring the absolute worst out of people.
>> L A O R U Sing.
This funeral was full of family drama, unresolved issues, secrets, cheating, stress, and just people acting a plum fool. Instead of everyone coming together and acting like they have sense, they chose to bring all their baggage to the fume. And it was very entertaining. With that being said, while watching this movie, I noticed some things. And I have my thoughts. But before we get to that, it's time to recap. So, let's get into it.
As this movie opens up, we have Reel reading a letter to Bud, her husband, from his sister Margarite. Now, this letter was to encourage Bud to get back to church since he had missed a couple of services. And basically, his sister wanted to make sure that he was able to get into the gates of heaven. Well, I think this letter arrived a little bit too late. Well, bud, what' you think of that?
>> Oh, little tink tink. Anyway, we fast forward to Margarite calling her son Royce with a song that he didn't want to hear.
Oh, what a time of glory.
>> Oh, hell no.
>> Now, first of all, she wanted to know why it was 7:00 and he wasn't out looking for a job. He didn't have any answers for her. And second, she wanted him to take her over to Reel so that she can comfort her and help her plan the funeral. And Roy didn't feel like being bothered, so he asked her why she didn't ask any of Bud's kids. And you already know that did not go over well.
>> What time do you want to leave? What time you think I want to go? Next month, boy, get your tribulent, worthless self over here. Now, ain't going to keep long in this heat. Back at Rayel, she had already received her first visit from the reverend. He had came over to check on Rayel and her daughter, Delightful.
Delightful never said much. And honestly, this had to be like the easiest role for her. But anyway, the reverend asked Rayel what he should say when speaking about Bud and Reel was really honest. He was mean.
>> Mean >> as a snake.
>> I see.
>> And surely >> sirly.
Now the reverend didn't feel too comfortable speaking that way about but he wanted the delivery to be sweetened up a little bit to be not so blunt. I mean you know how funerals are. They love to make people appear better than what they were. But to add context, Rayel tells the reverend a little story about Bud. She told him about how when she got saved, she came home super happy and told Bud about it. And instead of him being happy for her, he cussed her out. So she told him that she wanted him to get saved, that his soul would be damned if he didn't. And that still didn't move him. So after this, she cut him off and they pretty much were living roommates from that point. They had been living together this whole time with little to no interaction. Well, there was one time and that's how Delightful came about. And here is where we meet Shereice. And listen, Shereice got on my damn nerves. All she did was run her mouth and throw Junior's failures in business in his face 24/7.
>> Lord knows I don't know how I'm going get through it. I mean, all our humiliation knowing that Daddy Buzz up and died knowing that you never made nothing of yourself, Junior. It's going to be sad sitting there thinking how daddy bud died knowing we had to sell everything to move into that god awful trailer to pay off that big old dream.
>> Then she goes on about how the family doesn't like her. Wonder why. Then to really get under Junior's skin, she tells him how she could have been with somebody else who was more successful and then she wouldn't have to deal with the mess that he was putting her through.
>> Pushing. But oh no, I couldn't think about myself.
>> Nuh-uh. Now I had to listen to my foolish heart and get married to a fool.
>> I'm going to kill us.
>> Oh, please.
>> I'M GOING TO KILL US. I'M GOING TO KILL US. I'M GOING TO kill us.
>> To give you a little background as of why Junior and Charice were just a hot mess. Junior once had a successful business, but things over time fell through and now he was down on his luck and Sharice was having a hard time adjusting. So, after this slick comment, he puts a gun in her face, which does what he needed it to do. It shuts her up temporarily. Honestly, she was brave as hell to be talking this slick to him, knowing that he just lost his dad and he was already down on his luck and irritated about that. Plus, they had these kids in the car. Like, y'all need to chill. But even after all of this, she kept going.
>> You would have to get a job and buy some bullets first, Junior. Put that thing away.
>> Poor Junior. He just looks so defeated.
From here, we meet Ray Bud and his wife Lucille. They were busy planning the funeral arrangements. And listen, Ry was stressed and irritated as hell. He pretty much stayed this way throughout the film, but Lucille was trying her best to keep him calm. Listen, Ry didn't care too much for funerals and everything that came with them. The planning, the people all in your face, all in your business, all in your finances. Listen, same. Same. But to add on to his already building stress, Lucille tells him that Shereice and Junior and the kids will be staying with them over the weekend.
>> Junior, Sharice, and the kids are going to stay here with us.
>> No. No.
>> Hey, bud. He's your brother.
>> No, I'm not going to have Junior in that mess around here. They can go stay at a motel.
>> Now, we are 20 minutes into this film, and I'm already on Ray's side. There will be no way Sharice and Junior and those kids will be staying with us.
Absolutely not. She reminds him of the shoes that they need to get for Bud's funeral. And before he left out of the driveway, he asked for one simple favor.
>> You just do me one favor.
>> What's that?
>> When I die, don't tell nobody. Just bury me out in the backyard and tell everybody I left you.
We go back to Sharice and Junior on the road, still alive, barely. Sharice notices that one of the kids has something in their mouth. Turns out it was an earring that wasn't hers. And you already know all hell broke loose in that car. While Ray's at work, his boss tries to talk to him about his dad, but Ry was actively dunking and dodging those big feelings, so he didn't really want to talk about it. and his boss definitely wasn't getting the hint. But he does remind Rey that they are a family and he's here for him when and if he needs him. Ray couldn't seem to get away quick enough because then he received a call from Roy telling him that he was out of gas and he needed his help. Listen, Royce was stuck in this hot ass car with no air with his mama.
And you already know that was a recipe for chaos.
JESUS GOT THE KNOB.
>> Satan got the car key.
>> GIVE ME all >> He got so fed up with Margarite that he figured that it was much better to walk the two miles to the gas station than sit around waiting on Ry. But she didn't want him to leave her. So he was pretty much stuck listening to her until Ray came. Then Margarite proceeded to go on a rant about Royce not having a plan and how much he needed a plan for his life since he wasn't doing anything at the moment. And he didn't even have a job at this point, but I don't know if he said this to get under her skin or if this was his actual plan, but he pretty much tells his mother that he planned to just ride things out until his unemployment dries up and then he will find a nice Christian girl and live off of her and welfare at the same damn time.
Well, there is. Is that your plan?
>> Yep. That's not it.
>> You want to know what I say to that?
>> And Ry arrived just in time to see all this mess unfold. Lucille has spent all day running around like a chicken with his head cut off, trying to make sure everything was set for the funeral. She wasn't able to make it to the store before it closed, so now everyone was eating corn dogs for dinner. By this time, Shereice and Junior had arrived and child, they were still on one. So, everyone gets together to discuss the funeral arrangements. Now, things start off rough when Junior suggests that cost wasn't a factor and that he and Ry would take care of everything. And just when Rey was about to pop off, Lucille stepped in and calmed him down for now.
Just then, Sheree stepped out of the room to ask Lucille if she had any more nerve pills and tell me why they had locked the kids outside. child. They must be bad as hell. And come to think of it, they never let those kids inside, not even at the funeral. But anyway, Junior tries to talk to Sharice, but she's still upset. Lucille had to pop a nerve pill just to keep herself together and to be able to deal with everything.
Rel tried to empathize with Sharice by telling her that she was sorry she wasn't feeling well. And instead of just taking this and being quiet and going back to her room, she says this >> because I know what it feels like to watch something that you love just shrivel up and die right before your very eyes.
It's sad. Then she intentionally drops the earring that she found in Junior's car and proceeds to tell everybody where this earring came from and the fact that it wasn't hers. Pretty much telling everybody that Junior was cheating. And it would have been at that point where we would have had to kick her out. She would have had to go cuz what we're not going to do is manage our grief and your unstable emotions. No, we're not. But they get back to planning a funeral and what would be on the headstone. Ray and Junior end up getting into it over the lengthy scripture that Margarite wanted to place on it. They were being charged per letter, so the scripture she wanted would be too costly. While Junior was cool with the extra letters, Ry wasn't.
And this conversation turns into a battle over how they view money.
>> This is the last time we got to show our daddy how much we loved him. And all you can do is sit up there and talk about how much it's going to cost. Not everybody think about money all the time. Ray, >> some of us don't think about money any of the time. That's why some of us don't have two nickels to rub together.
>> I saw that new.
>> And then the conversation turns to Junior's badass kids. Ray calls them monsters and then they start scrapping in the living room. child. Whole time Reel sat there being quiet, not saying much. Then finally, she snapped and told them to stop. She then gave Roy a letter containing 12 letters that would be on Bud's headstone. And those 12 letters will be nobody's business. It was strictly between she and Royce. And she specifically told him not to show anyone. Once Reneell left the room, Margarite scolded the boys for fighting in the living room. and she told Royce that he was definitely going to show her what was in that note. Now, I can tell already that Margarite is the family member that loves to overstep. But we find out what is on the note. Mean and sirly. Now, Ray is stressed out at this point, so he goes outside to drink, which is bad because he's been trying to stay off the bottle. He wasn't even supposed to be drinking at this point, but his family was driving him crazy. A little while later, Junior comes outside to talk to him. And he also tells him how he's sorry for the recent loss of their baby. The doctor had told Lucille that to have a successful pregnancy that she would pretty much have to lie still, lie flat, and not move. So, that's what they were doing. Ray ended up leaving the house for a quick minute to get a prescription filled. By the time he came back, Lucille had lost the baby in a chicken bucket of all things. Ray asked Junior if he was going to tell him the truth about if he cheated on Sharice or not. Turns out yes, he did. He met a girl at the shop that struck up a conversation as he was trying to sell a machine to her. And that conversation made him feel so good about himself. He felt important. He felt seen. He felt like he was returning back to how he was before. The conversation made him feel like a man. But then Sheree showed up and brought him down to earth. She's looking all hot and sweaty with all them damn kids just hanging hump up a man screaming for a popsicle. I watch that woman pack up the rest of her stuff and just drive away. Yeah, I got this strong desire to just run Shereice over with that machine, man. After this, he got the strongest desire to leave Shereice and the kids behind and he end up meeting with this lady and they did some things. So Ry asked him what he planned to do and Junior said that he planned to get money and then just take things from there.
Ray extended an olive branch to his brother by telling him that he could bring his machine over and polish his driveway and Junior gratefully accepted.
We get a montage of what happened overnight. Junior tried to make up with Shereice, but that was a hard no. Ray and Lucille snuggled together. Poor Reneell couldn't get much sleep cuz Margarite was snoring loud as hell. And Royce was hard at work trying to capture his Christian woman. Anyway, we fast forward to the wake and child, it was a mess from the start. First of all, Bud's feet were in an awkward position.
>> Lucille, my daddy's out here wearing ballet shoes.
>> You know how Daddy Bud always had arthritis in his feet so bad? Well, Antoine thinks that when he had a stroke that he sort of pointed his toes down and they just sort of stayed that way.
>> Then they had to be out of the funeral home by 8:15 because there was a meeting scheduled after. Ry was super stressed again and Lucille was trying her best to manage him and everyone else.
Unfortunately, Shereice and Junior was still on their mess. Listen, I would have banned them from the funeral.
Honestly, somehow the note that Reel gave to Royce had gotten around to everyone in the funeral home. I just know Margarite had a lot to do with that. And speaking of, why was she taking pictures of the body?
>> Well, bud, they got you painted up like a $2 hole.
I would never understand why people take pictures of the body in the casket. Now, why would you want to have that in your memory? I will never understand that.
And then we go to Reneell talking to one of the guests. Listen, this tickled me.
No, Nora looks much better than he did the last time I saw him. But since he had his bypass done and his gallbladder out, I've noticed a real improvement.
And next month, WE'RE GETTING RID OF THAT PROSTRATE. ARWAY. CLEARLY, this man is set to climb the staircase to heaven, but she keeps pulling him back. Let that man go, please. Ray was super stressed.
He was running around, burning up, sweating up a storm, getting more and more irritated. Then his boss tries to make him walk up to the body. Absolutely not. Then, to make matters worse, he starts hallucinating.
>> What's the matter with you, boy? You supposed to take care of things. Look how it all turned out. Your brother can't keep his pants zipped up. Your sister, she done fallen in love with the refrigerator and your wife can't have the one thing in the world she wants.
Boy, I believe what you need is a drink.
>> He ends up running to the bathroom to escape. Margarit and Charice end up bonding while looking over Bud's body.
And tell me why this girl up and jumped into the casket. You know, there's always that one every single time. Whole time this is happening, Rael is just observing and she's just in her zone. I think she was just happy to be free at this point. Now, Royce tries to step in and encourage Ry to look at his dad's body. And Junior arrives shortly after and he tries to encourage him to do the same, but Rey was not having it.
Honestly, Ray looked like he was about to stroke out at any minute. He did not look good at all. Meanwhile, Sharice was having another one of her moments and creating a line out of the bathroom.
Then, Wanita arrives, Shares's nemesis.
Now, Ray tried to give himself a pep talk, but that is didn't work. So he decides to drive off. Meanwhile, Wanita was taking a very dangerous trip down memory lane. And this was triggering Shereice. See, Wanita was married to Teddy Wayne, who is this successful rich guy. And Shereice swore that she could have been with him and that she could have had Wanita's life.
>> You know, I could have been married to that Teddy Wayne slo if I wanted to.
>> Oh, Lucy. I could have been I could have been rich and stupid. I would have been good at it. BUT LOOK AT ME. Look at me.
Who am I now?
>> Junior finally made his way to the bathroom. He thought Sharice was still in there. Hold up. So, he starts telling her how he feels about her. Tries to be all mushy and just reveal his feelings to her. Turns out Royce was in there the whole time and didn't tell him anything.
He was just laughing at him. Sharice was still in the kitchen having another meltdown, per usual. to finally calm down and get his stuff together. Ry had to call on God for help. And his prayer was answered pretty quickly because the reverend just so happened to be driving by and he encouraged Ry to follow him back to the funeral home. Now, do you remember that lady that Junior had relations with? Turns out she was at the wake and she was also the same woman that Royce had slept with the night before. As the ladies were setting the table, Bernardine becomes the topic of their conversation and Wanita mentions how she saw her at a gas station two weeks ago, staggering out of some old Cadillac, Junior's Cadillac.
>> Now, there are a lot of people >> My husband done did it to that child in the Shopwell PARKING LOT. LORD, TAKE ME NOW.
>> LISTEN, this is way too much. Kick her out now. And then to make matters even worse, someone had the nerve to bring a chicken bucket, which of course triggered Lucille. So now she was in the bathroom crying. Shereice was so hot that she had to step into her makeshift prayer closet. At this point, Margarite and Delightful had to get together. Now you know it's bad when you piss off somebody that rarely talks.
>> I don't understand. I don't understand.
I don't understand. Honey, you think you're the only one with heartache, huh?
I have you to know I have a son in the penitentiary. You don't see me moing ON THE FLOOR. YOU DON'T SEE ME HIDING up in somebody's closet.
>> This closet tanking AND YOU CAN'T HAVE IT.
>> Ray finally makes it back to the wake with the reverend just in time for Grace and this comment.
>> I had no idea your daddy was a dancer.
>> Pretty well kept secret. Charles, >> so we have another montage. We see Royce and his mother watching TV. She falls asleep shortly after and her Bible drops to the floor. When Royce picks it up, he sees a picture of him placed in the Bible and then he starts to read. We see Ry checking on Junior to make sure he made it home safe and alive. Ray stays behind to talk to his mother for a little bit. They discuss the letters on the headstone. He tells her that he found out what she wanted on the headstone and he was highly against it.
Instead, they will put rest in peace, which was 11 letters, and they will receive a $2 credit. And right now doesn't even put up a fight. She agrees to it and lets it be that. They go upstairs to talk a little bit more and this is where she shows him some scissors that she had a long time ago that she recently found. Years ago, she used to make different things like blankets, quilts, stuff like that, and she used these scissors to create those things. Now, she thought she lost the scissors over the years, but turns out as she was looking through Bud's things, she found her scissors. I can't for the life of me figure out what he wanted with him. Never even occurred to me to ask him if he knew what it were. It came to me that your father's like these scissors. We didn't lose him on Wednesday. We lost your father a long, long time ago. Ray asked her if she loved her father. She doesn't answer, but she does ask him if he loved him. He admits that he did, but he also hated him at times. It was complicated. But she does tell him that one day a door is going to open and he's going to feel free to feel however he feels about his dad, good or bad, and he'll be at peace.
So, we fast forward to the day of the funeral. Royce woke up with a clear mind and an urge to clean his space. Ray woke up stressed yet again, and Lucille discovered that she just might be expecting again. Listen, I think at this point she needs to stay home cuz this family will definitely stress her and their baby out. So, they get to church.
It's hot. The air isn't working. And on top of that, the reverend is missing.
Turns out the night before he went out to eat somewhere, and now his stomach was all messed up, and he was holed up in the bathroom while everyone was waiting for him. Meanwhile, Wanita and Shereice sat next to each other making small talk. Charice wasn't interested in the conversation at first, not until Wanita told her this.
>> You want to know what I think about when my mind wanders? How at the end of each day, I tuck my precious little boy into bed, turn off the lights in my $800,000 home, crawl into my king-sized bed, and lie there and wonder where the hell my husband is. You sure you don't want a piece? Wanita asks her if she loved Junior, and Shereice didn't have an answer for her, but she does tell Sharice that soon enough she will have an answer, and she'll know where she stands with him. And unfortunately, she was very right about that. So, the reverend finally makes it out the bathroom and Junior arrived just in time for the service to start. Instead of focusing on the prayer and the service in general, Junior takes his time to try to apologize to his wife and get back on her good side. Listen, all of this could have waited. This was so disrespectful.
Then, as soon as the prayer ended, he got up and declared his love for Shereice in the middle of the funeral.
Why did he do this?
I love you.
>> Kick them both out at this point. Ry had had enough of everybody's BS. And I don't blame him cuz at this point it's all a little bit too much.
>> This family may be the laugh in stock around here. But for once in our lives, we're going to do something with class and dignity.
All right, Reverend, take it away.
>> Now, things were calm for a while until the reverend stomach issues returned.
>> The message was simp simple, hey, would y'all don't mind just excusing me for just a minute? I'm >> And this lightens the mood a little bit.
Margarite complains about how they're having a service without a reverend and Rel suggests that Ry go up and speak about his father. He asked Margarite for a Bible verse and before she could tell him one, Roy stood up and offered a suggestion which surprised his mother.
>> When my father and mother forsake me, and the Lord will take me up.
>> Teach me thy way, O Lord, and lead me in a plain path, and let me see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait on the Lord and be of good courage and he shall strengthen thine heart.
>> Wait, I say on the Lord.
>> Ray begins to speak about his father.
And one thing that he does say is that he wish he told his dad that he loved him instead of waiting years for him to tell him first. And he makes a point to tell everybody to tell the people that you love that you love them while you have them. And he also tells everyone that letting a person in is the most precious thing that you can do. and he encourages everyone to do that in his own way. His dad taught him that. And then after this, Shereice went up to sing and the vibes were high. After that, Ry was finally able to go up to his father's body without breaking down.
And Lucille revealed a secret that in about 7 and 1/2 months from now, might be getting a little surprise. And if it's a boy, we're going to name him Buddy Ray. And if it's a girl, we're going to name him Fisha Joy. But just don't get your hopes up too high yet.
>> As everybody leaves the church, a little girl hands Rey a baby doll. Now, was this a sign that they were going to have their own Bodisha Joy? Horrible name, by the way. I don't know, but I like to think that that was the case. But this was the end of the movie, and here are my final thoughts. As I was watching this movie, a thought came across my mind. When it comes to black funerals, and I don't know, this may be for all funerals, but but there are always people situations that are going to be a constant. For instance, Margarite was definitely the overbearing, meddling relative who says they're there to be supportive, but really they just trying to be nosy as hell, and they never really know when to mind their business.
I found it extremely disrespectful how she told Royce to tell her what was in the note that she heard cuz she was in the same room that she heard Rael tell everybody that whatever she wrote in that note was between she and Royce. I didn't like that at all. Shereice is definitely that relative that's going to show out wherever they go, but especially at funerals. I don't know what it is, but when this family member sees a casket, it's like the spotlight turns on and they think they're going to get a Oscar. Before you know it, child, they climbing the casket, screaming all out loud, running up and down the aisle.
Just a hot mess. But Shereice should have been banned from the wake and the funeral, from all activities. I found it really insensitive how she brought up Junior's cheating in front of Reel, who is obviously grieving. Keep y'all drama to yourself, especially if you're not even going to leave him when it come down to it. They had bigger things to worry about, and they really didn't need or deserve that stress. Lucille was definitely that family member that you can always count on when it comes to stressful situations. She's always going to make sure that everyone is taken care of and everyone is good, even when she's stressed herself. But just seeing how Lucille was running herself ragged throughout this movie, I can see why she had a hard time having a successful pregnancy. Just trying to monitor Ry is a lot. But to add his family drama on to that is way too much. After finding out that I was pregnant again, I would have stayed home and stayed away from everybody. You can tell Ray and Junior were those type of siblings that only stayed around each other because they were siblings. Like if they weren't related, they wouldn't really fool with each other like that. And they probably had issues stemming from childhood. But since it was never addressed, every time they see each other is awkward. And this funeral definitely didn't help things.
Wanita was definitely the bougie family member that you see every once in a while. You might see her at the family reunion, but you'll more than likely see her at a funeral. She keeps to herself, child. Something that I never noticed before is that there were a lot of things left unsaid when it came to Bud.
It seemed to be that Bud was a very difficult person to love, and Reel, Ry, and Junior struggled with their complicated feelings about him. Junior never thought he'd die. Ry wasn't sure if he was happy or sad that he was gone.
And Ray Nel was kind of indifferent. And the story about the scissors suggested that he was cruel as well, that he hid those scissors intentionally. And listen, Rayell, his own wife, struggled to find good things to say about him and place on his headstone. I believe Ry and Ray Nel's biggest struggle wasn't accepting his death. It was more so struggling with the relief they felt that he was really gone. Bud just seemed like he was just a very hard person to be around. And while they never addressed the fact that Junior and Roy slept with the same woman. I also loved how Royce came around at the end. He finally understood that his mother fussed at him because she cared about him. She loved him and she wanted him to do better. Hi, editing Britney here. As I was working through this recap, I noticed that all the women in this film or most of the women in this film, they were suffering in their marriages and relationships. You had Ray Neil who stayed with Bud knowing that he just wasn't a good guy. He was just very hard to deal with. So instead of leaving him, she decided to just stick with him and just tune him out. And then you had Shereice and Junior. Even though Shereice was just hard to deal with on her own, there was still infidelity in the marriage and it was somewhat expected of her to just accept it, forgive him, and move on. Then you had Wanita who from the outside looking in, she had the perfect family, the perfect husband, the big house, all the money, all the things, right? But then it's revealed that sometimes she don't even know where her husband is and he's out doing his thing and she just deals with it because other than that she has everything that she ever wanted. Even Lucille and Ry had issues with their marriage. He once used to stay out all night. He was a drinker and issues revolved around his drinking issues and all those things. Even the lady from the funeral, her husband is due to enter the gates of heaven, but she won't let him go for what reason? I don't know because the quality of life is not there. That's one thing I noticed throughout this film is that the women are suffering in their marriages or dealing with BS in their marriages that just isn't okay and shouldn't be normalized. I don't know if it's because of this movie or like the recent news of Tina and her husband. It just made me really look at this film a different way. But yeah, I feel like that's somewhat expected of women to deal with certain things in their marriage. It's like they are required to stick it through. They are required to just move on. And infidelity is nothing simple. That's not a simple thing to get over. That's not a simple thing to work through. So, I don't know. It's just something that I noticed and I wanted to put this in there. But anyway, keep it moving. But overall, this is still a classic for me. I really enjoy rewatching it. It's definitely one of those comfort films that doesn't get talked about enough and I feel like it should. Anyways, that's it for this recap. Please like, comment, and subscribe if you haven't already. As for the next recap, all I'm going to say is 1998.
This is a movie about a not so blended family that's struggling with their dynamic and a diagnosis that changes everything. See you next time, you guys.
Bye.
