You Can’t Watch ‘The Odyssey’ As Nolan Intended | The Social

[00:00:00]Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey broke box office records this weekend and tickets for IMAX 70 mm screenings were particularly in demand. The movie was filmed entirely with 70 mm cameras and if you can't find a cinema that plays a format, you lose up to 40% of what the director wanted you to see, right? So the question is is it fair to create a film that only some viewers can experience as intended?

[00:00:25]>> No.

[00:00:26]>> Oh, interesting. I I Listen, maybe it's because I'm married or in a partnership with someone who's a cinematographer, but I think this is completely fair. And actually it's marketing genius, guys.

[00:00:37]>> Oh.

[00:00:37]>> There are only 41 theaters in the world that have the exact parameters of what Christopher Nolan wanted, okay? There's one in Toronto, if you want hot tip, you can go. But the thing is that we tried to go see it this weekend and I actually you can't get tickets. But think about it. What was the last time we know post COVID? It's been harder and harder to get people out to see theaters. People are staying home more and more. So this might be the very thing that actually helps resurrect the movie industry, which is so necessary right now. And the thing is it's not like it's garbage if you go and see it in the other formats.

[00:01:07]You might not be able to see like, I don't know, a giant's head. Like it's okay. You guys can deal with it. It's okay. IT'S ALL RIGHT.

[00:01:13]>> IT'S NOT OKAY.

[00:01:13]>> IT'S OKAY.

[00:01:14]>> I THINK IT'S OKAY.

[00:01:15]>> REALLY?

[00:01:15]>> Or go to the right theater if you're a film nerd.

[00:01:18]>> the deal. I I I think okay, I'm going to speak on behalf of independent filmmakers for just 1 second cuz the question is is it unfair? We just need to know. Now, a Hollywood if they do a wide release, that comes in like 3 to 4,000 cinemas, right? A mid-budget will get maybe 500 to 2,000. And if you're an independent filmmaker, you're lucky if you get your movie in a hundred theaters. So we just want to like just kind of keep things in perspective for like if this is fair because The Odyssey came out in 4,000 theaters and you know, there were multiple shows at multiple theaters. I'm the type of moviegoer where I will watch it on my phone and just be as happy as if I saw it in an IMAX theater. I'm sorry. Yeah, I it doesn't matter to me. I don't need all this extra sound. I don't need my chair to shake. I don't need you to be flipping me upside down. I don't need the special glasses. I It doesn't matter to me, but I do love and respect the fact that this very well-decorated and well-respected director is doing things for your people like your husband who are the film I was going to say film nerds, but film enthusiasts is probably a better thing to say.

[00:02:11]>> [laughter] >> So, it creates creates that excitement.

[00:02:12]But for me as a regular regular, listen, wherever is cheapest to see it is where I'm going. WHICH IS WHAT I DID ON FRIDAY. SO.

[00:02:20]>> First of all, uh Andrea, you're a criminal for that.

[00:02:23]You're a criminal.

[00:02:24]>> I'm not a criminal.

[00:02:25]>> You should be locked I'm going to watch this on my phone. That is so wrong. I don't even know what >> Without a doubt.

[00:02:30]>> But I But I I kind of I'm in the middle between the two of you where I'm like there's people who don't really care about the nuances of filmmaking. They're just going to watch it anyway like that on the phone, on the iPad. They're They're going to But for people who actually want to watch it the way it was meant to be done, you have to find the theater. I had no idea until this happened that we only have 45 of them or 42 of them across the world.

[00:02:52]>> And it's not even like it's new technology. It's old technology that they've been refused to be making for like 40, 50 years now. So, this is the thing where I'm I think what Chris Nolan is trying to do is like let's try and engage back into some of the old things that we gave up on to get a new experience. And I for one, I love this.

[00:03:08]I love the commitment to >> So, would you wait until till >> I'm going to wait till it. You can't You can't find a ticket in Toronto.

[00:03:14]>> You guys are going to wait >> [laughter] >> for it.

[00:03:15]>> Melissa, you waiting?

[00:03:16]>> Okay, here's the thing. AM I WAITING FOR IT? I'm not the target demo for Chris Nolan movies. I know that that's going to make me like really stand out. But but it feels like you don't like your fans if you do this.

[00:03:28]And the reason why I say this is you made it with like I think you know I I paraphrase this, but it is so hard to make the movie with this kind of film. I think someone told us this morning they got to stop every 3 minutes while they're shooting to change film. Like it's a very um laborious, work-intensive process to do this. Because the goal I thought of making a movie is to have the most number of people see your movie.

[00:03:55]>> But there are still art. YEAH, THERE ARE.

[00:03:57]I'M SORRY, if I'm paying full price for a ticket, I don't want 40% of the film gone.

[00:04:02]>> Yeah.

[00:04:03]>> And 40% of my screen is gone. What did I pay for?

[00:04:06]>> Guys, this is art. We want to I think we want to >> all I want 100% ART.

[00:04:09]>> I JUST THINK THAT FIRST OF ALL, I will just say this before we move on. I think that there are so many What we don't realize is how often even just the transition between a theater experience to your TV does cut things off. Like there are things that are lost at all times. We're just making a big deal about it this because it is so rare. And I think let artists make art. And like try to elevate the form.

[00:04:29]>> But also when you make something, when you create something, you immediate The moment you put it out there, you lose control of how someone is going to consume it. And so you kind of want to put something out that you are proud of as a creator. And then leave everything else to the consumer to the to the to the to the consumer to decide. And that's why I say I love this because he decided I'm going to make this in 70 mm to see in IMAX.

[00:04:52]And hopefully most of you who love my movies will find a spot in Mississauga in 3 months.
