While Klein mapped this in isolated diads, the analytical psychologist Carl Young recognized this mechanism scales up to dictate the behavior of family systems. Young relied on an anthropological concept to describe this systemic fusion, calling it participation mystique. Participation mystique is an op priori oneness between a subject and an object. It is a primitive state of identity where the boundaries of the individual self dissolve entirely merging into another person to create an unconscious shared reality.
