[00:00:00]Another day and another Scottish adventure and today I'm in the forests of the Scottish borders and I'm on the hunt for Sir William Wallace.

[00:00:12]On a hilltop above Dryburgh Abbey in the Scottish borders, you'll find a little-known statue of Scotland's most famous son, Sir William Wallace.

[00:00:25]This sandstone statue stands around 31 ft tall and was commissioned by the Earl of Buchan, a passionate supporter of Scotland's history and her national heroes.

[00:00:37]For more than two centuries, Wallace has watched over the surrounding countryside from this commanding hilltop position.

[00:00:48]The statue was placed here to overlook the beautiful Tweed Valley and the famous Eildon Hills beyond.

[00:00:54]According to local tradition, Wallace is said to have passed through this area during Scotland's Wars of Independence and the monument was intended to celebrate both the man and the landscape he fought to defend.

[00:01:10]Born in the 13th century, Wallace rose to become Scotland's guardian after his famous victory over the English at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297.

[00:01:20]But he was eventually captured, taken to London and executed in 1305.

[00:01:26]But his fight for Scottish freedom has inspired generations that followed.

[00:01:33]A spectacular view, a beautiful monument and a lasting tribute to the man who became a legend and it is absolutely gorgeous.
