Once it reached the Mediterranean ports, it had access to every city in Europe simultaneously. The cities made it lethal. Medieval urban centers were dense, unsanitary, and almost perfectly designed for disease transmission. Waste ran through open streets. Water sources sat next to slaughterhouses.
