The Soviet Union's Venera program (1950s-1980s) conducted the most intensive series of Venus missions, with Venera 7 achieving the first successful surface landing in 1970 and Venera 9 becoming the first lander to photograph another planet's surface in 1975; these missions revealed Venus's extreme conditions (surface temperature of 905°F, pressure 911 times Earth's, and 97% CO2 atmosphere) and provided crucial evidence that Venus may have once been more Earth-like before a runaway greenhouse effect transformed it into the hellscape we observe today.
