ICOM ID-5200 OR ICOM ID-5100 ?Added:
M0 FXB. With the announcement of the new Icom ID-5200, many people are wondering, should I upgrade from my 5100?
So, let's take a look at the specifications. I have got a 5200. Let me just show you.
That's mine.
In my shack, I use it every day, and it is amazing.
So, let's take Firstly, let's talk price. I feel that the new 5200 is going to come in under a thousand and above 800. That's my guess.
Although it does have the the new waterfall feature, I've watched some videos on it, and the waterfall feature is going to be isn't going to be like your Icom, and please check with Icom on this. I've watched the videos that they've presented, and the the scope on it is going to be more like the 52.
Okay? So, if I just go going to show here what that looks like.
And it's completely usable.
Here's my 52. Now, let's bring this window up.
It's more going to be like two of these in in a in a mobile set, okay?
And, you know, the 52 to me is one of the best devices available at the moment for a dual band handheld radio. It's And it's actually quite well priced, as well.
And, of course, it's a dual band D-star. You can send photographs at the touch of a button. Just go menu, photographs, and you'll it'll send photographs. And this the new 5200 does that as well.
The 5100 sends photographs, but you you just don't have that color screen. You have this black and white screen, which for many years people have said, "Oh, bring out you you bring out a color screen. Just bring give us a color screen.
Um but there are many people that sort of like the the black and white monochrome design as well. And you'll see that some devices are actually being released with that black and white screen. So, anyway, um let's just go through some of the 5100 features. Now, we know it's got D-STAR or DV VHF and UHF and uh GPS and then you buy a Bluetooth module that you can add to it and then you can interact with the RS-BA1 software to send photographs, messages, and I think you can bring up maps. And when you're viewing that on your smartphone, on your on mine it's Android, um some of it is actually in color. Um so, excellent. We'll look down here at some of We'll just go through some of the titles of what they're talking about.
So, we've got touch screen, okay, which works great. Dual DV DVs. It says watch, so you're going to transmit on one at a time, by the looks of it. Uh but that's still very handy that you could put it into DR mode or have it on DV. And I'm just looking at mine now. If I go to the sub band with the touch, um put press DR. I've got DR mode on both halves of the radio uh on my 5100.
GPS receiver included, works great as long as you've got a signal uh near you.
Uh scrolling further down, and this is just a brochure that I'll put the link in for.
DV FM repeater list function. So, you can tap the the DR mode at the bottom, you can do a repeater search.
So, I'm doing now. GPS information, repeater search, uh and uh near repeaters, AM, sorry, FM and digital.
It's got Now, scrolling down, there's your VS-3 Bluetooth headset. I'm sure that would work with the new model.
D plus reflector linking, SD card slot, yes.
Uh now it's definitely not got Wi-Fi.
Now remember the new model has Wi-Fi and that opens up a way of connecting to uh different uh peripheral peripherals via Wi-Fi and also Bluetooth. It has got Bluetooth and you can connect to things. Now it hasn't got APRS. They're saying that the the new 5200 will have APRS, but you might be completely happy with the DPRS. You might be like, "Well, okay, well, I just want to show up on APRS.fi."
And that does actually work. So you might be happy with that. And depends if you even use it very much.
Uh so there's all the RS-M1A Android application, DV data fast mode.
Other features on the We're on the 5100.
There's the DPRS.
The CSV importing and exporting of files, connecting it to software, you know, what you know, via a USB cable. I don't think um there's a USB-C out one here, but there is a a USB connection on it. I think it's the square type.
This is the E model fast mode and then all the accessories you can get. If we just go across and just start to Oh, let's turn that down.
We just go across to the listing here for the 5200 and just Let's let's let's let's look at the main features, yeah? And and So second hand I would say you'd probably get about 350 pounds in the UK for the black and white model. 300 300-ish.
Um this is going to come in I think I'm just going to say 900 pound, okay? Um so you got to think, you know, I go to the store, I give them 900 pound, maybe even 1,000, but let's say 900.
They give me 300 of my own when I give them 700, I've got the new color screen model. Fair enough.
Or you could give do nothing and just keep what you've got and think, well, I don't really mind it if I haven't got a color screen.
Um you've got to decide whether the Wi-Fi and the fact you could put you could do full APRS tracking and all sending messages be tracked around the country with full APRS interacting with apps like APRS Droid via Bluetooth TNC. I get so many people say that, can it do that? But do they ever actually use it? Cuz I know it's a question that >> [snorts] >> There's a lot of questions that hams ask, and they just hear other hams asking, and they ask it cuz they're so nitpicking like, "Ooh, can it do this?
Can it do that?" But how often are or would you actually use APRS Droid on your phone, which I've done and tested several times?
Um I'll probably do it once and then not even touch it again for a year. It's that kind of thing.
It's handy that it works cuz it's just ticky and it's fun. Um but day-to-day use, general use, 99.99% of the time, what are you actually doing?
You are um on VHF or UHF and you're doing D-Star.
And I I think the GPS is definitely handy, but you can put in your manual location. They both have GPS. So it says a large color display. Obviously, people love a color screen. Now, I was hoping for a color screen that was like my Icom 705. The fact that they they decided to go with the type band scope that is on the Icom 52 and please look at the images in their video um on that. Let me see if I could have you find There it is there. Found it really quickly. So, it's still a a very nice radio.
Um but that is the style that we're seeing for the waterfall on the 5200. So, take a good look at that. And then when you see on my one again, it's Now, it's hard to see it, but it's very similar to I I keep saying that it's it's basically a 5200 um times two.
Uh so, anyway, and then the other one we got to think about is the Kenwood D M TM-750 is coming out. Now, that doesn't have a waterfall.
Uh it does have full APRS.
Here's a video. Please watch it from Everyday Ham. Thank you.
Um and he's actually there at Dayton, and there's the band scope.
Okay? Of the 5200.
Okay? It says it there.
I just, you know, I still think it's going to be a big seller. Of course it is, the latest model. But why did they go with that?
Why couldn't they just go that extra mile and give us the kind of scope we're going to get on the 705? I feel cuz there's an Icom 705 Mark II coming out that's going to include USB-C.
Um whether they go the full hog make it dual receive like the Yaesu FTX 1.
I think they probably will and then have this ability this add-on where you can um bring it up to 100 watts and 50 watts VHF UHF. I feel like that's in the pipeline.
Um and then more for more Wi-Fi and terminal mode interactivity. Uh but anyway, that's interesting.
And then look, we've got the very similar the the Kenwood There it is there, TM-750. I don't see a waterfall, but it is a beautiful sc- a radio to use. I know I've seen videos and the screen on it is HD quality, of course. It's got everything Bluetooth, Wi-Fi they've built into this. You don't need hotspots with these anymore, though. I actually quite like using hotspots. It's like having my own repeater at home. So, then you've got this. Now, this is going to be a thousand pound as well. It's always a bit higher priced.
I would say more like 1200 pounds.
Um as well. So, so much to choose from.
So, I think that's about it. I mean, are you What are you thinking? Let me know.
Let Let Icom know.
Yeah? Let them know what you think. And um am I going to get one? Of course I am.
You know? How am I going to make hundreds of videos helping my ham friends to use these these, you know, really technical devices if I don't have the device, yeah? So, catch you on air. I think we've got some really interesting news coming from Icom over the next two, three years. We've been watching Yaesu. I also think that Yaesu are due to do a new handheld.
Um so, I'm waiting to see what that's going to be like. And thanks for watching my channel. Please, if you haven't already subscribed and like I'm, you know, I'm here to make all these I feel that really interesting videos about using all the stuff that we love to use, whether it costs five pound or I do have a limit.
I wouldn't spend more than my Icom IC-760 cost me.
And that was about 2000. I got it for a bargain brand new.
2300 about two years ago. I didn't pay for it in one go, take it from me.
Um I don't think I'd ever spend much more than that, ever, ever, you know? Um and even my Flex was only was it in that range, the Flex radio.
And I did say to them I was only going to buy that once.
I'm not planning on upgrading it. Just so I can do videos and enjoy and learn the whole Flex radio system. But I have now 73
