The marine layer is a cool, moist air mass that forms along coastal areas due to the temperature difference between the ocean and land, creating significantly cooler temperatures in coastal communities compared to inland areas; as the sun rises and temperatures increase during the afternoon, this marine layer typically dissipates, leading to warmer conditions inland while coastal areas remain cooler.

Thursday morning First Alert weather forecast with Jessica Burch - 4/30/26Hinzugefügt:
There you go. Few clouds hovering there.
Jess, will they clear?
You know what? As we head into the afternoon hours, those clouds, they're going to dissipate fast. Once that sun is up and we start to warm up, we actually see sunny skies in the forecast for us throughout the next couple hour or actually into the afternoon hours today, evening hours tonight. Let's actually just play that out right now because that stubborn marine layer still holding on tight to places along the bay, like Oakland, Richmond, all the way over into San Francisco. Really starting to isolate itself though just along the coast as we head into the afternoon and evening hours tonight. I saw it yesterday. You know, you drive on one side of the peninsula and you see that thick cloud layer just hanging on tight to our coastal communities. Well, our friends over in the coastal communities are looking up and only seeing gray. So, we know it looks a lot different, but you know how that plays out for our temperatures? As you take a look at our daytime highs, look how significantly cooler it is thanks to that marine layer over in Half Moon Bay. We're only at 61° today, while our friends off into our inland microclimates, warming up fast with of course different relative humidity, too, are jumping all the way up to 81° in places like Antioch, upper 70s, all the way into Livermore, San Jose, Los Gatos, and Morgan Hill. It is a warm day for us today off in our inland microclimates. Today is actually the peak of this warming trend. We'll start to cool down a little bit more now that we're heading closer to the weekend's forecast. So, take that for what you will. I mean, if you like warm days and if you like getting out there and getting some outdoor activities in on days like today, I really feel like it's a beautiful one. It's pretty temperate up into the North Bay. We're talking about upper 70s near Napa and Vallejo, upper 60s this afternoon in the the city of San Francisco. And one more thing besides the marine layer that I just want to play out, I also want to show you the winds because they're pretty light this morning, a little bit breezier compared to 24 hours ago. But as we advance the clock into this afternoon, we can still see wind gusts pushing in from offshore up to around 25 mph in places like San Francisco, about 15 mph wind gusts off into our inland microclimates. So, tomorrow, yeah, a little bit cooler for us as we head outside and we continue that cooling trend into this weekend with more clouds rolling in from offshore. It'll be a cool and cloudy weekend for us ahead and then once we head into early next week, there's even a chance of light drizzle in the forecast for us as early as Monday with those dense clouds that I'll talk more about coming up in just a bit.
