"They Destroyed This African Library to Hide Knowledge"

[00:00:00]They burned one of Africa's greatest libraries and most people still have no idea what was lost. For years many people were [music] taught that Africa had little written history before colonialism. But hidden in the ancient city [music] of Timbuktu were hundreds of thousands of manuscripts covering astronomy, medicine, mathematics, law and philosophy. And these were not [music] copied from Europe. They were written by African scholars centuries ago. At its peak Timbuktu became one of the intellectual [music] capitals of the world. Students crossed the Sahara desert for months just to study there. Families protected private libraries filled with [music] rare knowledge passed down through generations. Then came invasions, war and destruction. In 1591 [music] Moroccan forces invaded the Songhai Empire. Scholars were exiled, libraries were damaged and many manuscripts disappeared forever. Families began hiding books underground, inside walls and in secret rooms [music] to keep them safe. But the story gets even more unbelievable. In 2012 extremists occupied Timbuktu and threatened to destroy the remaining manuscripts. The world feared African history would vanish forever. So ordinary people did something [music] extraordinary.

[00:01:17]Librarians, drivers, scholars and local families secretly smuggled more than 300,000 [music] manuscripts out of the city using metal trunks, motorcycles, boats and even donkey carts. Imagine risking your life not for gold but for books. And here's the part [music] that shocks many historians. Some manuscripts contained advanced astronomical [music] observations, medical knowledge, legal debates and business records from centuries ago. Proof that Africa had major centers [music] of scholarship long before colonialism. Yet many people were never taught this history. Not because the knowledge did [music] not exist but because much of it was ignored, hidden, damaged, or nearly destroyed over [music] centuries of war and colonial disruption. And even today, thousands of these manuscripts remain untranslated, which means some of Africa's greatest forgotten [music] knowledge may still be waiting to be discovered.
