Beyond Practicality: A Hunting Wheellock Rifle as Pure Art #shorts #hunting #history #firearms #artAdded:
A remarkably exceptional wheellock rifle.
And upon taking your very first glance at it, you can see immediately exactly what this specific piece was originally crafted for. For hunting, that is.
We have various detailed hunting scenes on the intricate lock plate.
Engravings of wild animals, of hunters on horseback, and the like.
On the other side, which makes the piece even more interesting, we have a resting Diana in the form of an enamelled copper plate set into the stock.
A very unusual form of decoration for firearms from this period. Normally, you see them made with iron cut or other metal parts.
But such a magnificent piece, this incredibly beautiful and serene scene, is truly rare.
But what makes this particular rifle so outstanding is this absolute unwavering dedication to the art of hunting.
If you look very closely at the wooden stock, you see that it is really covered entirely with intricate hand-carved staghorn.
And that's where the true mastery, in this case of the gunsmith, the stock maker, comes into play.
We all know stag antlers. That means, of course, that you cannot simply make a full stock out of a single stag antler.
Instead, you have to take the stag antler, remove the textured purling on the outside from the bone substance, and then carefully attach it to the wooden stock.
This is only possible because an antler also has various curvatures, short branchings, and the like. So, they are always only relatively small pieces.
But what is striking here is that the master worked so perfectly that hardly any transitions between the individual staghorn plates can be seen on the rifle.
So, you could almost believe that this piece was made from a single piece of staghorn.
That's how perfect the master was in his work.
