A DIY log hauling system can be designed using a pulley mechanism with a winch and safety chain, where the log is positioned tail-heavy to ensure it strikes the support point automatically and remains secure during transport; the system requires careful angle adjustment of pulleys to prevent the log from falling off, and the safety chain serves as a backup protection mechanism.

Homestead Haul: Heavy Logs and Tiny Piglets Ep. 217 #sawlogs #milling #pigletAdded:
Heat. Heat.
How are you enjoying your day, Holly?
A little bit of a rainy day, but what are we driving around for today?
Oh, we're picking up piglets.
>> What?
>> Piglets.
>> Oh, yeah. That's right. They're in the back.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. Bacon 2, bacon three, and bacon four.
>> Oh, wait a minute. It's actually rilet.
>> Ah, somebody's got a name on one of them rilet, but for my reference, they're two, three, bacon two, three, and four.
They're in the back here behind the cardboard. Two females and a male. and we're heading home with them now. We got the pin all set up and it's not a very nice day, but I went and got them some shavings and uh so hopefully they'll huddle together and uh yeah, huddle together, stay warm, and survive.
Survive. Totally survive. Yeah. So, this year I uh So, last year we had one pig and that went really well. We only got like a we've been kind of sparing it cuz we only got like a meal or two left and uh so we had a we had friends that want wanted in on it. So I said, "Well, you know, it's not much difference in uh in raising one pig or two pigs or three pigs." So So uh we got one for them and then there's another guy that wanted a half. So I said, you know, because we are running a little short, one and a half would be good for us and we want to make some sausage this year. So that's we got one and a half for us, half for somebody else, and another one for somebody. So three pigs this year. We'll see how it goes.
>> We have the duckling or sorry, >> duckling. I'm just telling a duckling story.
>> He's just telling a duckling story. We have piglets here and they're called We have two guilts and one burrow. So, one boy that's castrated and two little girl piglets and they're called gills. So, here we go.
>> Well, there's one.
>> One.
Oh, look. Poo.
>> Oh, there's poo. Well, what are you expecting?
Oh, no. No, little one.
There we go.
This guy, this guy was deing me out.
Wasn't sure if he was going to No, no, no. Aw.
A.
It seems so violent. It's not.
It just seems like it. Oh, >> there we go.
>> Let's go see.
>> There we go.
>> Oh, we're peeing. Double's peeing now.
Oh.
>> So, uh, 66, 17, and 27. I don't know which one's which now, but uh >> Oh, they're drinking water, too.
>> Drinking water. Yeah.
>> Oh, that's so good.
>> Okay.
>> Oh. Oh. Oh, that's really good.
>> Yeah, they're really uh >> Go in and show them.
>> Yeah, I will. I got to go get them some feed.
>> Okay.
Look at the little ones.
A a little tails. Oh my gosh. They've never spent any time outside.
And Brian's going to get some feed.
But I think they're probably just looking for food right now by the looks of it.
Hey little ones.
Oh, you're going to be cold. Oh, you're already so cold. Oh.
Oh my.
Oh my.
Yeah, they're just rooting away.
Yeah. Oh, here comes here comes Bry with the food. Maybe in here, Brian. In here.
>> Bring it. Bring it in here.
>> Come on. Come on. Here it >> is. It's a human.
Put your arms out. Yeah.
>> Like this.
I guess girl.
>> They need to settle down a little bit, I think.
Yeah. And maybe do we have a They uh it was cold last night. Well, 4Β° probably or two or something out here.
We had cold wind rain yesterday. That was they're protected there of course.
But hey, I don't know. I'm assuming the facility they came out of was pretty tight and indoors. So when we took them out of the car, they were shivering. But hey, that I went and they got a bunch of that shavings. That's a commercial or industrial shave planer. So lots of shavings there. And they uh seem like they beded in nicely there. So So beautiful day here. Lots going on. And just up there a little early out and about time to feed the rabbits. And uh I got to check the young the young here.
Uh but maybe today when it gets warmer.
Don't want to go messing around in the cold.
Going to cut back on the food this morning. We're going to get these guys to eat for free hopefully most of the day. So yeah. So I got uh six of them out there now. I had them out there the other day for a short time, but uh looks like a good day.
Everything's pretty wet there now. So they're chewing away and cleaning and soaking up some sunshine. So it's got to be good for them, right? So we'll leave them out there most of the day. The only fear I got is birds. I don't think I know a pretty brave bird, but I'm sure they're watching. But we'll see. I'm I'm going to be around most of the day. So Bacon one, two, bacon two, raise your hand.
Bacon three, raise your hand.
Bacon four, identify yourself.
Good. Good stuff. All right, guys.
So, new home for the greenhouse.
So, down there where it was last year was uh pretty protected for the winter. Um but not a permanent spot, of course, cuz we were, you know, it was okay when we were living in a trailer living here now. So, Holly wants nice and close, close to the water. So, I just put it here. Uh she's going to fix it up and make it look whatever inside and out. And uh so I just got it up here and got it leveled up. Got a step on it. So we'll see how that goes. Uh placement of this having a big yard is great, but you want to then you got the need to be able to look and see everything and it's hard to put buildings up that don't block things. So anyways, our our uh goal here was to be in this window and then from this window I can still see the trailer, the pigs, bunny pin, and then up here anybody entering the driveway or anything I want to be able to see there. The only thing that's right here is trees behind. So that's that was the place we placed it.
Now the barn is going to go over here summers too. So um so yeah. So that's why we put it right there. Don't want any closer um in case the wind blows it over. I don't think so, but just in case. So yeah. So anyway, that's where we put that. So we'll see how that works out.
So, this is what I cut come up with here, guys. Uh, I got my pulley here.
So, that's going to go down around a log, come up and hook on to here. And then once I get it up, this is my safety chain. This has come up here. I can adjust this to any length I want.
Let uh release the uh the uh release the winch and then it's uh then that's going to carry it. So now I got it reinforced um with this. So I think that's good. So anyway, uh going to go and going to go give it a try. So, I'm going to take you guys along. We're going to see what happens.
Like I said, something breaks, just come back and fix it. Something I need to move something, well, then easy to do that as well. So, let's go.
All right. I see one problem already. The angle of this pulley here needs to be turned. So, I got to change that.
needs to be uh yeah he's getting straight up and down and that's not working because it's when it goes tight it's starting to wants to fall off the off the pulley. So got to change the angle of that and um I drove too far on that log. I should have been back here somewhere. I want some tail heavy by right I guess and then the front will come up automatically and strike there somewhere and then and then that. So, anyways, I'm going to go with this log with this and I'll come back and try another one.
All right, this is probably my biggest log, spruce log this winter. I think he's a good size. I don't know, good 16 in there. So, you see what I I got this redesigned here now. Before I just had to pull it here down. That was it. So, now I got this coming over the top and this going this way. And then I even got an extra one in here.
just and this is adjustable just based on I got this mounted with this lock. So anyways, um I can move this depend on how big the lock is or the log is I guess. So yeah. So Yeah, still got that front to deal with.
There we go.
I'm going to try something different here.
This is what I wanted.
All right. This is what I wanted. I want it tail heavy so that it hits here and that's keeps it there. Now it's support on this chain, not on the winch.
Yeah, works good. I got one over there that's uh um uh fur fur, but I'm going to try to cut that one at 12 feet. So, that's going to be heavy, too. But anyway, um yeah, let's go with this.
Okay, I'm backing into them, which is not ideal, but uh once I get a little more room here, I'll be able to drive through. So, I just got this one lined up. So, I'll show you here what I'm doing.
Put that as tight as I can.
Another one.
Here we go.
Reverse the drill.
Slack comes off. That easy on the gearbox cuz uh if you go over a bump, you probably wreck the gearbox. And that that's a not that's a like a I don't know it's a cheap winch or but it's a log arch trailer.
>> Log arch trailer cuz the shape is arch.
Right. Y >> So I got it already up there now because I got the safety chain on. See this?
That's is it sitting on that now? Not on the cable.
See the chain there? Piece of chain. I got latched there for it'll fit any size. Right.
>> So it's less.
>> So now I got to release the I got to take the tension off the chain and then release it. Right. So So I put the drill in. You know, you could use a hand winch just that I had this winch here and the drill is a lot more convenient. Right.
So I get the tension off of that.
Drop the chain.
>> Okay.
It's quite the police system you got there.
>> Out.
>> So, um >> and um Okay. So, now I just uh put my chain up.
>> Driveway. Go get the next one. A little notch for your chain, too.
>> Yeah. So, you just, you know, to get it up, it's just in reverse, of course.
But, uh, yeah. How you like that?
>> I like the pulley system.
>> Wicked, eh?
>> I'm really into pulley systems.
>> Yeah. Well, my first design didn't work right. I only have one and I Anyways, this works perfect now.
>> Well, >> re-engineered.
>> Is it something? So, what's the >> And even this, this looks a little Mickey Mouse, but this works good cuz small logs. I can move this up here.
It's only a lock because this lock, this thing had a loop on it. So I said, "Well, I can readjust this down here for big logs or whatever." Right. So that's just >> I have a safety concern already.
>> What's that? Now >> you have a weak link.
>> Where?
>> Right here.
>> Oh, probably. Yeah, >> that's bad.
>> Okay. Yeah, but it's >> because because >> this is terribly overrated. So that's fine. I'm not worried about it >> underrated.
>> No, no. The chain is way heavier than what I needed. Right. So that little bit of bend will be fine >> because >> So anyways, >> chain protects you.
>> Good job or what? No, all them logs I even got.
>> Good job.
>> All them logs. I don't have to uh stream it back.
>> So you just basically back it up and roll it over the chain.
>> No, the chain after the cable. I got to put the cable underneath.
>> Oh, I guess I'd have to see that.
>> Yeah.
>> Do you have that to show me?
>> Well, you'd have to come with me.
>> Wait, why can't we do it now? cuz I'm not going to pick this one up again. I'm going to go get another one.
