Shrine Live Stream - 23rd May 2026Added:
This week the Walssingham Association prays for the Dasis of Brentwood entrusting our members living and dead of that dasis to our Lord Jesus Christ through the intercession of our lady of Warsingham.
Prayer of the Walssingham Association.
God our Father, grant that we may do your will in all things.
Fill us with the gifts of the Holy Spirit so that receiving your eternal word with faith and holding him fast in a good and honest heart, we may bear him to the world with patience in all that we do and say.
May we give due honor also to Mary, his mother, our lady of Walssingham, by imitating her holy life, and thus encourage others to call her blessed.
May we come at last together with all members of the association, living and dead, to the joys of eternal life.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
>> Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those that trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
>> Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
>> Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Welcome to the Catholic National Shrine and Basilica of Our Lady here in Walssingham. Please join me in the rosary. Today we meditate on the joyful mysteries.
In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
I believe in God the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontious Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell.
On the third day, he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there, he shall come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Okay.
I think they did. I don't think they did.
Double Hello.
Hello.
Okay, I'll take one So I will I don't know.
Come on.
And I can This is big.
That's it.
Congratulations.
Happy birthday.
Are there any seats?
Ladies and gentlemen, Whoa.
That's better.
I have it.
Here we go.
How was Christmas?
Let's see.
Good morning everyone.
I'm going to address everybody in the chapel first inside and a very warm welcome. And it is warm, isn't it?
It's not often like this in Walssingham.
We've forgotten what the sunshine and the warmth feels and looks like. So lovely to have you. Very warm welcome to everyone here at the Catholic National Shrine and Basilica of Our Lady here at Wals Singham, England's Nazareth. Today we are particularly delighted that you have come to be with us from the Dasis of Brentwood.
And of course, Bishop Alan Williams, formerly twice director of this shrine, is leading this celebration of holy mass. And so many clergy from the dasis.
So many priests from the dasis of Brentwood have come to lead you in your small and your coach groups uh from your parishes, groups of parishes from the dasis of Brentwood. And we're also very pleased to welcome back uh a former recctor here, the first diosisan recctor from your own dasis to be the recctor of the shrine here, Monscior John Armitage.
Everywhere I go and most days as the recctor here of the shrine today, I hear the name Monsia John Armitage. So he has many fans amongst you I know. Uh I am not worthy to follow in his footsteps but we're delighted that Monscior John is with us today with the Dasis of Brentwood. But most of all, we're delighted that you're here. That you, the pilgrims, the people, the lay faithful of the dasis with many religious as well scattered through are here in England's Nazareth. And you brought beautiful weather with you. So you can come again.
But wherever you're from, and I'm conscious many of you have traveled uh got up early to make this pilgrimage and have traveled to be with us today. May you have a blessed pilgrimage in Walssingham.
For for today's collection at mass, if you would permit me, just to say that if you are a UK taxpayer and are intending to give by cash, please could you consider using the gift aid envelopes that are in the front of your benches?
Placing your money in there and filling in the envelope and signing it gives the shrine an uplift on the collection. If you are giving by card, you can use the donation devices at the back of the chapel and ask our sisters from India, the shrine sisters for help if you need such assistance. And across the shrine or other machines using the gift aid facility if you possibly can. And I take this opportunity to thank also those who are giving online.
We do appreciate your support, not just today, but all the year through. And so now, let us settle down for mass and prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries. Parents, we are delighted, absolutely delighted to have your children with us. Do please though keep a tight hold on of your small children so that nothing in and around the shrine can fall upon them and cause them harm. So parents, I appeal to you in that regard. Keep hold of your small children, please. And if your children become distressed in any way, uh then we have the welcome center next door which has a live stream facility. So you can still follow the mass and sit in there quietly and then then come back into the chapel or in the grounds for the rest of mass once all becomes calm again. So for now, please everyone inside the chapel, welcome. Lovely to have you. Please turn off any mobile phones so you're not embarrassed when they go off when granny starts to ring you during the offetry.
So, let's turn them off now, please.
Thank you so much and welcome.
And now to everybody alresco outside in the grounds. I hope you found a nice shaded place. At the moment, this is the shaded area, but the sun will move, so be prepared. Lovely to have you from the Dasis of Brentwood.
Oh, I think you can do better than that.
From the Dasis of Brentwood.
And of course, you've so many priests and religious with you too, dear lay faithful of the Dasis. Great to have you as well. And you're being led today by Bishop Alan Williams.
Bishop Alan Williams of course was the recctor here, the director they used to call them in those days twice over. And of course we have Monscior John Armitage who was the first diosisen priest non-marist to take over here as the recctor um some years ago. And so we're pleased to have him back here in Walssingham, aren't we?
>> But wherever you are from, it is lovely to have you with us here in Walssingham today. Here in England's Nazareth, and you brought good weather with you, so you can come back.
Yes.
So lovely to have you. I'm conscious many of you had to get up a little bit early, did you? This morning to get yourselves ready for the coaches to bring you to Walsa. Thank you so much for today's collection at mass. If you are a UK taxpayer and are intending to give by cash, please could you consider using the gift aid envelopes found in the front of your benches? This is what they look like. Take them out now, please. In the front of your benches.
And if you're on the very front row, they are behind you. Yes.
If you intend to give by cash in the collection, please could you consider using these envelopes, placing your money in there, signing the envelopes, filling them in very briefly, the signatures important. Gives the shrine that little bit of an uplift on the collection. Hey, so if you could do that for us, we'd be very, very grateful.
If you intend to give by card, you can use the machines available in the slipper chapel and also in the candle cloister or in the back of the chapel here, the chapel of reconciliation using the gift aid facility if you possibly can. I take this opportunity to thank so many of you, not just today, but all through the year for your great support of this n national shrine of our lady all year through. Thank you so much.
And now let us settle down for mass and prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries.
Parents, we are delighted you have brought small children with you today.
But do please keep a tight hold on them because there's things around the shrine that can fall upon small uh wee ones. So just keep an eye a special eye to their care please. We also have next door to the chapel here a special welcome center with the live streaming of the mass. If you want to go in there just for some calm with the children who are unsettled, you're welcome to go in there for a time, too. So, the time of confessions has come to a close. There's been confessions heard all morning.
We're going to start our mass in just a moment. But before we do, can I ask everyone outside to turn off your mobile devices, your mobile phones, so that you're not embarrassed when they go off.
When granny starts ringing during the offer tree, you're not embarrassed. Is that okay? But just to conclude, thank you so much for being here. We do appreciate your support, your presence today. And may the sun continue to shrine in this shrine all through the day and for your procession down to the village a this afternoon. Is that okay for now? Thank you so much.
And so I ask the procession to stop you. And let us stand everyone because we're going to begin our celebration singing the anggeles.
The angel of the Lord declared unto Mary, and she conceived of the Holy Spirit, "Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

And we say together, I confess to Almighty God and to you my brothers and sisters that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do.
Through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault.

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles.
After Jesus was taken up into heaven, the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the mount called which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day journey away.
And when they had entered, they went up to the upper room where they were staying. Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philillip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alfus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James.
All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer together with the William and Mary the mother of Jesus and his brothers and sisters.

For the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.
The Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.
His mercy is from age to age for those who fear him.
He has made known the strength of his arm and has scattered the proud in their conceit of heart.
The Almighty has done great things for me and holy is his name.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones and has exalted those who are lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things and has sent the rich away empty.
The Almighty has done great things for me and holy is his name.
He has helped his servant Israel, mindful of his mercy, even as he promised to our fathers to Abraham and his descendants forever.
The Almighty has done great things for me and holy is his name.
Hallelujah.
Hallelu.
Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it.
Halleluahallelu.
The Lord be with you.
And with your spirit.
>> A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew.
>> Glory to you, Lord.
At that time, while Jesus was still speaking to the people, behold, his mother and his brothers and sisters stood outside asking to speak to him.
But he replied to the man who told him, "Who is my mother and who are my brothers and sisters?"
and stretching out his hand towards his disciples, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers and sisters.
For whoever does the will of my father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother."

So, let me tell you what I was doing.
Like any normal bishop, I thought I wouldn't mind a coffee and cake before I come to the shrine. I went into the village, but there was a traffic jam. I thought, oh dear. And it was Chelsea.
So I got out and I went on the coach and at first they thought it was part of a PO because he could buy the cake.
But I said, "No, it's just me. Just me."
Anyway, you're probably asking, "Was the problem solved?" Yes, it was. I got my coffee and cake. That's the important thing. Then I went back and thought, "Oh, I need to get them back to the shrine." Which they did eventually. So here they are. And you might be thinking, "Yeah, but Bishop, you haven't welcomed us. We're not from Chelmsford.
So, welcome to you as well. Well done.
>> Slightly bigger chair than on a pilgrimage. There's lots to involve us, lots to capture our attention and actually in a sense lots to distract us.
And there are three things I want to say today. Three things very important things about Mary the mother of Jesus.
Mary the mother of God. Mary the mother of the church. The first thing is this, the wonderful slipper chapel built probably we think about uh 1360 something like 1365 just down there the national shrine of the mother of god a shrine of a lady of wingingham go in there at some point perhaps you've already done that and the reason being that it commemorates that moment at the enunciation where Mary is at Nazareth she's by herself. She's looking towards Almighty God. And God invites her to be the mother of God. And she says very simply, "Fiat, let it be to me as you have said." And the enunciation at Nazareth, everything changes from darkness to light for actually being lost to being found from not a lot to eternal salvation in our Lord Jesus Christ. That's the first thing. So if you can go into the slipper chapel and just think about that God asked Mary a question. He gave an eternal yes when he asked you a question. What should she ask to almighty God?
>> Second thing is this. The gospel we've just read. We hear about Mary the mother of Jesus and she's actually a disciple of Jesus. Wherever Jesus goes she goes too. Sometimes we hear explicitly about it. So for example at Canaa in Galilee, the first miracle of our blessed Lord, she's there. She sees what's going on and we even have her words. Do whatever he tells you. Do whatever he tells you.
And for St. Augustine and of course an Austinian pope, this was originally an Austinian shrine. For St. Augustine, that was a mighty thing. And he even says at one point, it's a greater thing that Mary is a disciple of Jesus than that she's God's mother. It sounds quite shocking to us that, but of course, what we're saying is she is the perfect saint, preeminent, astonishing, amazing, her yes, her free yes was the eternal yes for all time. So the second thing I want you to think about is this. Mary is a disciple preeminently. Mary is the disciple preeminately and again you can think of that whenever Jesus and Mary mentioned in the gospels think where are Mary's eyes Mary's eyes are always on Jesus if we look to Jesus in our lives we're saints if we're distracted other things happen Mary the great disciple of the Lord Mary the perfect disciple of the Lord but the final moment we thought about Mary the enunciation the mother of God.
We thought about Mary, the first disciple of Jesus all through his public ministry. But then we had that lovely first reading today from Acts of the Apostles and it's just before Pentecost piecing together the accounts of the gospel. Our Lord is in the upper room at the last supper, then crucified, buried, raised from the dead. But then we have in the upper room Mary in the midst of the apostles. And of course, we're talking here about the eve of Pentecost.
Indeed, today is the eve of Pentecost.
And we know that the disciples gathered around Mary in the upper room, the apostles, and in the midst was Mary.
What is she doing? She's doing what she always does. She's witnessing to her son. She's living a perfect life with the fat of Almighty God. And actually, she's a woman of the spirit, the woman of the church, the mother of the church.
So those are the three things to think about today. First of all, the dawn of our salvation.
Secondly, what it is to be a disciple of Jesus. But now we come along to Pentecost, to Pentecost, the upper room, and all the wonderful things that happened at Pentecost.
Now, I'm guessing you've come along today with petitions, with anxieties, with prayer, special prayers. Let me say immediately that I'm offering this mass for your intentions. I wonder if I might just mention a couple of particular intentions of mine. So our dean of the cathedral in Brentwood today is having the prestige of canon John Harvey and we pray for father John for his full recovery to health but also actually in the das of East Anglia and sadly also the dean of Norwich Cathedral Father Martin Hardy spent a bit of time in Charlesford. He's also struggling at the moment healthwise. So we pray for a full recovery for both of those priests, but actually we pray for all those people who need our prayers. And a final thought, the theme of the pilgrimage this year, the theme of our pilgrimage this year is Mary, mother of the poor.
Mary, mother of the poor. And the best way to kind of pull that apart is this.
Think of Mary at the enunciation. Yes, at Nazareth.
Then Mary with Jesus in his ministry.
Then Mary with the church in the upper room, but think also the work of Mary, the witness of Mary through the centuries.
She's astonishingly had shrines, pilgrimages all over the world. And there's one theme that unites all of that. She's the mother of the poor. Like her son, she looks at the poor. Blessed are the poor, they shall see the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are the poor, they shall be comforted. Blessed are the poor. Theirs is the son of God. Theirs is the mother of God. So let's also remember that that at the center of all our thoughts this year and in this shrine, we think of the poor of the world, the humanity of the world.
Pope Leo an Austinian pope our first Augustinian pope this coming week is going to in issue his first great encyclical and it's about the dignity of humanity the dignity of humanity and Catholic Christian teaching is this that every human being every human being is a beloved son and daughter of almighty God as God loves Mary as Jesus loves Mary so astonishingly God Jesus loves each one of us. That's the mystery of our faith, the dignity of humanity. So do pray this week for a great reception in the world, for the cyclical. And for ourselves, let's be very, very sure that no matter what happens in this swiftly changing world, in this difficult world, the fact that we're made in the image and likeness of God will be a self-evident truth for all peoples.
Our Lady of Wingham, pray for us. Mary, mother of the church, >> pray for us.

For by the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit, she conceived your only begotten son, and without losing the glory of virginity, brought forth into the world eternal light, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Through him the angels praise your majesty. Dominions adore and powers tremble before you. Heaven and the virtues of heaven and the blessed seraphim worship together with exaltation. May our voices we pray join with those in humble praise as we acclaim God of host.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosana.
Hosana in the highest.
in the highest.
Hosana in the highest.
You are indeed holy, O Lord, and all you created rightly gives you praise. For through your son, our Lord Jesus Christ, by the power and working of the Holy Spirit, you give life to all things and make them holy, and you never cease to gather a people to yourself, so that from the rising of the sun to its setting, a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name. Therefore, Lord, we humbly implore you, by the same Spirit, graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration, that they may become the body and blood of your son, our Lord Jesus Christ, at whose command we celebrate these mysteries. For on the night he was betrayed, he himself took bread and giving you thanks, he said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take this all of you and eat of it, for this is my body which will be given up for you.
In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice and giving you thanks, he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples, saying, "Take this all of you and drink from it.
For this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many, for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me.
The mystery of faith.
We proess until you come again.
Therefore, Lord, as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son, his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven, as we look forward to his second coming, we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice. Look, we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you will to reconcile us to yourself.
rather we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with his holy spirit may become one body, one spirit in Christ. May he make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect, especially with the most blessed Virgin Mary, mother of God, with blessed Joseph, her spouse, with your blessed apostles and glorious marts, and with all the saints, on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help.
May this sacrifice of our reconciliation, we pray, O Lord, advance the peace and salvation of all the world. Be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth. with your servant Leo our pope and Peter our bishop, the order of bishops, all the clergy, and the entire people you have gained for your own.
Listen graciously to the prayers of this family whom you have summoned before you. In your compassion, oh merciful father, gather to yourself all your children scattered throughout the world.
to our departed brothers and sisters and to all who were pleasing to you at their passing from this life. Give kind admittance to your kingdom. There we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory. Through Christ our Lord, through whom you bestow on the world all that is good.
Through him and with him and in him, >> oh God, almighty father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours forever and ever.
Amen.
At the Savior's command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
>> Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we bless hope and the coming of our savior Jesus Christ.
King of God now and forever.
>> Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles, "Peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will. Who live and reign forever and ever.
>> Amen."
>> The peace of the Lord be with you always.
>> And with your spirit.
>> Let us offer each other a sign of peace.
bless the sins of the world.
Have mercy on us.
God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.
of God, you take away the sins of the world, grant us peace.
Grant us peace.
Behold the Lamb of God. Behold him who takes away the sins of the world.
Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.
>> Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.
Just a normal distribution of opinion.
Holy Communion will be distributed both inside the chapel and outside it will be from station of the cross. So priest will come there and communion will be distributed and those inside the chapel it will be from the two side eyes. So we follow the instruction stewards. And if you receive communion on the tongue, please do open your mouth properly. And if you receive communion in the hand, you place the sacred host in your mouth in front of the priest before you return to where you are. And if you're not a Catholic or if you're a Catholic but you're not prepared to receive communion, you can come for a blessing. You may get to the priest by crossing your hands over your chest. And those that want to receive low gluten communion, it will be distributed inside the chapel in front of the tabernacle.
So you go there and it will be given to you. Thank you.

>> Could we sit down for a few moments, please?
So brothers and sisters, thank you again for being here today and for bringing glorious weather to us. Thank you so much. Thank you Bishop Allen for leading our celebration of mass today. And principally thank you for the dasis of Brenwood and for the organization of father Daniel Kelly. And uh father Daniel's laughing but I don't know why I've given him some homework for next year though. That's why he's laughing.
But thank you father very much indeed.
On the inside of your booklet you have the times for the rest of the program.
And we're going to try with our lady's help to be very disciplined on the times.
Yes, this is a very small busy shrine today. And so we are going to try and keep to our times, but I'll hand over to Father Kelly in just a moment about this program. So get your script ready. I'm giving you a few minutes to get your script ready. Just to say brothers and sisters, thank you dear fathers to the priests of the dasis of Brentwood. Thank you to the religious and religious communities and those who are on the way to becoming a religious institute as well uh in formation. Uh thank you for the leadership, guidance, the care that you give to the faithful gathered in Walssingham today.
Before you go, don't forget to pick up your free to a good home pilgrim guide for 2026.
And uh it's got the key aspects of the shrine as well as the key dates for the future. Some of you will come back later on in the year. We hope you'll be most most welcome. They are free to a good home at the back of the Chapel of Reconciliation. So if you're outside, go in and get your copy. And if you're inside, they're at the two exits and our shrine sisters will guide you. What is not free to a good home, however, is the brand new hot off the press pilgrim handbook for Walssingham. All about Walssingham, all about this shrine, the history, the theology, hymns, prayers, litinies, it's all in this. They are not free. They're on sale in the gift shop and there's one for everyone in the congregation with your name on it. So go into the gift shop after mass and get your copy. They're a bargain, the best momento of your time here in Wals Singham today. Most of all, let us give a big round of applause to Bishop Alan Williams.
I have known Bishop Allen for a long time on and off for about 30 years. When I came here as a student for the priesthood, he was my mentor and guide.
Little did I know that I would be following in his footsteps here as the recctor. So, thank you my Lord very much indeed for today, but also for your leadership and guidance and for your great friendship and devoted service over many years to this great shrine.
Thank you, my Lord.
and he's ready with baited breath to speak to you all about this afternoon's program. Have you worked it out? Over to you, Father Daniel. Thank you.
>> Thank you very much, Har. Thanks to you and your staff for looking after us today. Uh after lunch, after mass then will be lunch. Uh then at about 2:00 you will hear announcements regarding the holy mile. When you hear those announcements, if you are not able to walk the holy mile, go to your coach. Uh those who are able to walk the holy mile uh then gather in uh outside the church in this area that I'm looking at uh right now. Uh then the the uh holy mile will begin uh at about 2:30.
Uh we will uh walk in silence uh down to the abbey grounds where the blessed sacrament be exposed for adoration and we will celebrate vespers and ben. So enjoy the rest of your day.
>> So thank you father Daniel, thank you father Robert. Uh have a wonderful afternoon. We talked in the homaly about Mary and the enunciation, about Mary the disciple of Jesus and also Mary at Pentecost, mother of the church. And so have a wonderful day. Uh be good to each other, be kind to each other and say lots of prayers. One final thought, what happens if you meet Chelford and they are lost?
Now the chances of this are pretty high, so just be charitable. Be good. Uh they look lost. They always get lost, but that's the way Chumsford is. Give them a round of applause.
And let's stand up for the final blessing.
Our father Bart, nothing personal, the fine parish priest of Chford.
The Lord be with you.
>> And with your spirit.
>> And may almighty God bless you. The Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.
