In 216 BC, during the Second Punic War, Carthaginian general Hannibal Barca achieved one of history's most brilliant military victories at the Battle of Cannae by employing a double-envelopment tactic. Despite being vastly outnumbered by the Roman army, Hannibal deliberately allowed his center to retreat while his stronger flanks remained stationary. As the Roman legions pushed inward, Carthaginian cavalry closed behind them, completely encircling the Roman forces. This tactical maneuver resulted in catastrophic Roman casualties and remains a timeless example of battlefield strategy studied in military academies worldwide.
