You're Overplaying... And It Shows

[00:00:18]Here's the truth. You're not under playing, you're over playing, and everyone can hear it.

[00:00:27]In cover bands, especially at small gigs, what you don't play matters more than what you do.

[00:00:35]The fastest way to kill a dance floor is to prove how good you are.

[00:00:41]So, let's break down why over playing is wrecking your sound and how the best bands avoid it.

[00:00:50]Over playing isn't just shredding or playing really super fast.

[00:00:56]It's filling up every empty space.

[00:01:00]So, the whole song sounds cluttered.

[00:01:02]It's just one big wall of mess coming at you.

[00:01:05]You're adding unnecessary notes or playing on top of everyone else.

[00:01:11]Never letting the groove get into a pocket.

[00:01:16]This is just straight noise all the way through.

[00:01:20]It's when every musician when they do that, they're saying, "Listen to me instead of the band."

[00:01:28]And the audience, well, they don't really analyze it, but they just sort of stop dancing cuz they're not really feeling it.

[00:01:38]So, that's the problem.

[00:01:43]Here's the uncomfortable truth.

[00:01:45]Most over playing comes from insecurity, lack of confidence.

[00:01:51]You know, if you get a musician that wants they're thinking they want to stand out.

[00:01:56]Uh they want to prove their skills or they're afraid of being boring.

[00:02:04]So, they fill every space instead.

[00:02:06]They They want to think they're keeping things going, you know, they want to fill that void.

[00:02:11]But, pros understand something that amateurs don't.

[00:02:17]Space isn't empty.

[00:02:19]Space is power.

[00:02:23]And if you can't sit in it comfortably, it's going to show.

[00:02:31]Now, to you, it feels like energy.

[00:02:36]But, to the audience, it feels like chaos.

[00:02:40]The groove gets muddy, the vocals get buried, the song loses its its identity. Uh, there's no arrangement to it. There's no dynamics. There's no ebb and flow.

[00:02:53]And suddenly, the song that everybody loves doesn't hit anymore.

[00:03:00]Not because it's played wrong, it's because it's played way too much during the song. There's too much in it.

[00:03:10]Space is beautiful.

[00:03:13]Try it.

[00:03:15]What do great cover bands do instead?

[00:03:18]Well, they don't add more.

[00:03:22]They lock in.

[00:03:25]The drummer simplifies and drives the beat, drives the song.

[00:03:30]Uh, the bass supports. It doesn't compete. Locks in with the drummer.

[00:03:36]The guitarist picks moments instead of constant fills.

[00:03:43]Things that compliment the song in between.

[00:03:48]And the keyboard will always leave space for the vocals.

[00:03:53]Like you don't play over top of the singer.

[00:03:57]That's a golden rule.

[00:03:59]They understand this.

[00:04:01]The groove is the star.

[00:04:04]Not you.

[00:04:06]And when everyone plays less, the band sounds bigger.

[00:04:13]Here's how you can clean it up immediately.

[00:04:17]Number one, record your next rehearsal.

[00:04:21]You'll hear it instantly. What felt tight on stage is usually pretty cluttered.

[00:04:30]Number two, the mute test.

[00:04:32]Ask yourself, "If I stop playing right now, would the song fall apart?"

[00:04:38]If not, you're probably over playing.

[00:04:43]Number three, pick your moments.

[00:04:47]Not every section needs to be filled.

[00:04:51]Make the right moments count.

[00:04:54]Make sure they complement the song, not overpower it.

[00:05:00]And then number four, think like the audience.

[00:05:04]They don't care about complexity.

[00:05:07]They care about how it feels.

[00:05:11]So, you'll want to make the song have a life of its own. You don't want to try and force it. Simple as that.

[00:05:22]Here's the mindset shift.

[00:05:25]Anyone can play more.

[00:05:28]But very few can play less and make it sound better.

[00:05:33]The secret?

[00:05:35]Allowing space to enter into that song so it can establish a groove.

[00:05:42]That's what audiences react to. The groove. They get into it.

[00:05:47]Otherwise, you're just a band people might watch.

[00:05:51]So, that's the difference right there.

[00:05:53]Have some courage. Try it if you're not doing it right now, and you'll see a big difference in how people react to your music.
