Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick resigns ahead of likely House expulsion

[00:00:00]Representative Sheila Sherilles McCormack resigned from Congress ahead of a planned House ethics sanctions hearing. Sherfeilis McCormack was accused of stealing $5 million in FEMA funds and rerouting much of the proceeds to fund her 2021 congressional campaign.

[00:00:14]The House Ethics Committee later found Sherless McCormack guilty of wrongdoing on 25 out of 27 ethics violations.

[00:00:22]She previously had refused to resign from her House seat over the allegations. She called the actions taken by the ethics committee unfair in her resignation statement, saying she wasn't given an opportunity to defend herself. She then warned about the precedent set by efforts to remove her, saying they sought to punish her before due process was complete. The Florida Democrat is the third member of Congress to resign this month following the departure of former representatives Eric Swallwell and Tony Gonzalez.
