Libyen: Anhörung Khaled El Hishri vor dem IStGHAdded:
I've spent 14 years documenting atrocities inside Libya's detention centers. Torture, murder, rape, and enslavement. These are some of the crimes one man is finally being held accountable for. I'm outside the International Criminal Court in The Hague, where Libyan suspect Khaled al-Hishri is at a hearing that could take him to trial for crimes against humanity and war crimes committed at Mitiga prison in Tripoli. This moment is 15 years in the making. The UN Security Council referred Libya to the ICC in 2011.
And today is the first time that any suspect has stood before these judges.
Justice is possible when states comply with their obligation to the court.
Germany arrested al-Hishri and sent him to The Hague last year. Eight suspects remain at large.
Libyan authorities have a legal obligation to hand over those who are in Libya to the court.
After today's hearing, judges will have 60 days to decide whether to send al-Hishri to trial. For victims and survivors in Libya, today there's real reason to hope for some justice.
