Unit 731 was a covert biological warfare research unit of the Imperial Japanese Army in Manchuria that conducted horrific experiments on prisoners, killing over 3,000 directly and an estimated 300,000 in field testing; after Japan's surrender in 1945, the United States granted complete immunity to all Unit 731 scientists in exchange for their research data, which was then incorporated into US biological weapons programs, while the Soviet Union prosecuted some captured scientists.

Japan's Biological Warfare Unit Killed 300,000 People. The US Gave Them All Immunity. Here Is Why.Añadido:
In Manchuria, 1936, Japan built a facility officially called a lumber mill. It was Unit 731, the most secret and brutal weapons program of the entire war. Scientists tested biological agents, plague, cholera, typhoid, directly on prisoners. They conducted experiments at temperatures of minus 40° to study frostbite on living people.
Over 3,000 people were killed directly in experiments.
Historians estimate 300,000 died in field testing of biological weapons. The unit's commander was General Shiro Ishii. He was meticulous. He kept detailed records of every experiment.
When Japan surrendered in 1945, Ishii ordered the facility destroyed and all prisoners killed. American investigators found him within months.
They discovered his research was decades ahead of anything the US had. The US made a decision, complete immunity for every Unit 731 scientist in exchange for all their research data. None of them were ever prosecuted. The Soviet Union tried some they captured. The US did not. Ishii lived freely in Japan until 1959. He died of throat cancer at age 67. The immunity agreement was classified until 1993. The research data was incorporated into US biological weapons programs.
