Gratitude is a positive emotion of thankfulness and appreciation that rewires the brain to focus on positive aspects rather than negative ones, reducing stress and anxiety while creating social connections; a practical way to practice gratitude is to reflect on three good things that happened each day before bed, which helps shift focus from what's missing to what one already has.

Monday Announcements May 18th, 2026Added:
[music] >> Good morning, sweet world.
>> Today is Monday, May 18th, and it's an A day.
On today's show, we have Counselor's Corner, student announcements, and Hawk Book Time.
>> And remember, time to go fishing question? Embrace the day, people. Fly high, Hawks.
Time to go fishing question?
It's now or never.
>> [music] [music] [music] [music] >> Hello, I am Mr. Gertz, and we're adding special effects today. I'm Mr. Elliott, and welcome to another glorious episode of the Counseling Corner. Today, we're going to be talking about gratitude.
>> Yeah, gratitude is a positive emotion.
It's just about thankfulness and appreciation.
You know, I when I meet with students, a lot of times I talk to them about kind of my past a little bit if it relates to what they're going through. And one of the things for at least two or three years of my childhood, I lived without running water, which really to this day I appreciate having clean clothes. I appreciate taking a shower. It really is little things in life when you have struggled when you're young that you appreciate as you get older.
When you have a meal, find gratitude in food, even if it's not your favorite food, as many people on this planet do not have access to the meal.
Gratitude often rewires your brain. The brain has a tendency to view things in a negative way. It often tries to find out what went wrong more than what's going right.
Gratitude acts as a workout for the brain, training it to find the good stuff. Over time, you'll feel less stressed and more resilient when things get tough. Yeah, one of the things about gratitude is it's a social magnet. Um, people like to hang around people who appreciate others and appreciate the good things in life. Nobody likes to hang around people who always try to find the negative and always kind of gloomy, complain. Complaining doesn't change things.
Complaining doesn't they make things better. So, make sure that you realize that gratitude also creates social connections. Yeah, if you focus on what you have instead of what you're missing, it even helps you sleep and reduces anxiety. Yeah, a lot of the things that I talk about in that Mr. Elliott talk about, we actually use in our own lives.
One of the things I do almost every night is I do three good things. I think about three good things that went right during that day. It can be as simple as the pizza at lunch was pretty good. It doesn't have to be a giant thing. Just try to get away from the negative posts online and think about the things that made you happy that day before you go to bed. Yeah, being grateful doesn't mean that you ignore your problems or pretend things are perfect. It just means it isn't only the bad stuff you see.
>> All right, are we ready for the really bad joke?
>> excited.
>> All right, Mr. Elliott, what kind of drink do balloons really dislike?
I don't know. Oh, soda pop.
Boom.
>> That's good. That's good. So, I think we do have a student shout out.
>> Do we have a student shout out? All right.
>> Eighth grader Carter Gorman is being shouted out for being an awesome member of his community. Carter, fantastic and that balloon was much more difficult to pop than I expected. Have a great day, everybody. See you guys.
>> Bye-bye.
